I’d say yeah give it a watch. This movie and it’s likely sequel/s are now the definitive movie version of Dune but it’s still worth seeing the first adaptation. Both this and the 80’s one were adapted from the book Dune which is part of a 6 book series set in the same universe. Dune is to sci fi what Lord Of The Rings is to fantasy

Also no guns because shields reflect fast moving bullets. They have lasguns (as seen in door cutting scene) but when those hit a shield it’s basically nuclear reaction so swords and knives it is :)

Ah poop I just wrote the same comment coz I didn't see yours. And you explained it far better than me x
Frank Herbert’s Dune is essential reading. Have read it multiple times since college in the 70s.
"What was in that box??" Pain by nerve induction. A human can withstand any pain. The test is to see if you can overpower your instinct, and prove that you are human, not simply an animal. Also, no guns because shields. A quote from the original movie "The slow blade penetrates the shield." Anything moving faster than a certain speed gets repelled by the shield, indicated by the blue glow. Anything moving slower than that will penetrate, indicated by red. Hunter Seekers and Slow Pellets are able to modulate their speed so they can get to the target quickly, then "bore" through the shield, such as we saw with Duke Leto when he was shot in the back. The only exception to the lack of guns is the LasGun, which you saw the Sardaukar using on the door in the environmental testing station. Problem with LasGuns is they don't react nicely with shields. If a shield and Las beam intersect, both the LasGun and shield generator explode VIOLENTLY, in some cases with the power of a nuclear bomb. Thus, "modern" combat has come full circle back to swords.

Oh, and one thing I've thought about the various fighting forces in this movie.... Harkonnen soldiers are level 1. Atreides troops are level 5. Sardaukar are level 20. Duncan Idaho is level 75. And Fremen are level 60 for fighting, 100 for stealth. Sardaukar are the best trained military force in the galaxy, but the Fremen can slaughter them like babies. And I hear Duncan is gonna be on the next episode of Who Wants to Be a Doom Slayer?

And then there is the Maula Pistol, used by the Fremens, as an exception for lack of guns.
Literally went to the bookstore next day after watching it in cinema and got the original trilogy. The beautiful hardcover omnibus in black and gold.
Whether you understand the whole plot or not (which you’d have to read the book to do), you can see _every dollar_ of their budget on the screen, and that’s what’s so satisfying and beautiful about this movie.
The reason they don't use ranged weapons often isn't explained in the movie, but is in the book. Basically, it's because if they use a laser gun against someone with shields activated, both the gun and the shields immediately explode (on par with a nuclear explosion).
@wadehwallace

Basically, warfare in this universe is centered around shields and measures for getting past shields. the big exception, of course, is in the deserts where the sand worms live, because they are quickly drawn to the vibrations produced by the shields, so no one uses shields in those deserts.
_Dune_ is one of those novels that is incredibly difficult to film, much like the _Foundation_ series or, most of all, Proust’s _In Search of Lost Time._ So much of it takes place in people’s heads, which is made for novelistic narrative and prose but is maddening to film. You should approach the film as an audio-visual supplement to the novel. So far, this looks like the best attempt at a film adaptation. Btw, fun fact: the Bene Gesserit are largely precursors to the Jedi. And Arrakis is Tatooine. Lucas knew _Dune_ well.
@revariox189

The film was made for those in the know for sure. Denis Villeneuve said his main target audience is himself... As in the rare time a director just does what he always wanted to do and makes his dream come true with no studio limitation or budget expectations. Because I sure expect that film to tank big time. Even if Dune is my favorite media of all times. It simply is not Marvel popular material... And reaction like the one from Tim proves it... People get confused and want to see their favorite actor/actress. They have tons of preconcieved ideas and most importantly they don't LISTEN to what people say or how they act. Amount of people that pick up on the fact that Bene Gesserit planted ideas and superstitions in the mind of Fremen so they would see Paul as the Messiah is very limited. Yeah they see it but don't relate that whenever someone sees him as such its not a reveal that he is indeed the messiah, Its a proof their manipulation worked... Seems to me like lots of people are being as manipulated by bene gesserit words on this side of the screen too.... Dune is simply too much for general public tbh
@Neville60001

@Steve-hu9g, _Foundation_ is being turned into a long-term TV series on Apple TV, so what you said is wrong and then some. Also, the Bene Gesserit are *_NOT_* the precursor to the Jedi Knights; Jedi Knights are gifted with the ability to tap into a universal powerfield and use it for good (or sometimes evil), the Bene Gesserit are simply women who've learned to modify themselves to be able to control their bodies (and others) by using psycological training and manipulation of the vocal cords ( the 'Voice' mentioned and shown in the novel and movie) who are also gifted with precience and who are using their power to create a male Bene Gesserit that can 'see' into the past (examine race memory, which they already do, but they can only see into the racial memories of women) and examine both female _and_ male race memory called the Kwizach Haderach; they can also control their bodies to move faster and fight better than any other human being, men included (mainly the Sardaukar); said martial art is called 'the Weirding Way'. Not only can they do all that, they are also the secret rulers of humanity, who are more powerful than any of the Great Houses or the Emperor. They do _not_ have _any_ telepathy or telekinesis whatsoever, so they are _not_ Jedi Knights.
The test of the Gom Jabbar is to find out if one will act like an animal and lash out, or behave like a human and rise above the fear and pain and maintain control. Since Jessica did not have a girl as commanded by the Bene Gesserit, and being raised with the Bene Gesserit teachings and training, Paul had to be tested to see if he was going to be a calm / docile human or a raving destructive animal, like a Harkkonan. All Bene Gesserits are thus tested. To prove that their intellect can rise above fear and pain.
Dune is so amazing, I watched it yesterday and Timothee Chalamet was fantastic.
It’s actually 10191 **A.G.** AG is After Guild, referring to the Spacing Guild. The Spacing Guild was created about 11,000 A.D. Or put another way: You and I are living approximately 11,000 B.G. (Before Guild). **So the events of Dune occur 21,191 years in our future.**

Correction: the events in the MOVIE occur in 21191 AD (I forgot to subtract 2021)
I will just answer possible future questions and give interesting facts: - Greg Fraser is the cinematographer of this film as well as the upcoming Batman - The film was shot in Abu Dhabi, Hungary, Jordan, and Norway - Hans Zimmer dreamed of writing an ost to Dune - Paul's blue eyes mean that he has been using Spice for a long time, like Fremen - There was a war against machines in the Dune universe, and therefore there is no Artificial intelligence and advanced technologies, the inhabitants of different planets have abandoned them, and rely only on their skills, experience, skills in mechanics, engineering, etc... - The Bene Gesserit is an order of priestesses /witches / fortune-tellers (different cultures and mentalities perceive and call them differently) consisting only of women who have influence within political foundations and represent themselves as advisers/ mentors close to royal families (like Arethusa sorceresses from the Witcher universe, well, almost ...) --The bald guys who stood next to Vladimir Harkonnen (The Flying Fat Man) when he took a bath are Mentats, they are a living archive and a guide -Those who attacked the Atreides at night are the Sardukars, one of the strongest armies and the personal guard of the Emperor (the Harkonens are even less cruel compared to them, and unless only the Foremen can repulse them, by the way, they are one of the reasons why the Emperor was never dethroned) ruthless, real self-murderers, carry out any orders (somewhat reminiscent of the Outriders of the "Space Dogs" from the Avengers:Infinity War) when you saw a scene with Mongolian singing under a rain shower, then pay attention there people were sacrificed in the form of a ritual, this is one of their traditions...(according to the Aztec type)

One minor fix/correction: The Bald guys in the bath scene are actually girl slaves, not mentats but they are bald thanks to the extreme toxicity of the atmosphere of Giedi Prime, the Harkonnen world. The only mentat the Baron had was Piter, who was killed by the poisoned tooth.

I read "Dune" many years ago but I distinctly remember that during that duel at the end of the movie the Fremen get angry at Paul because at first they think he is toying with Jamis because of the leisurely way he's fighting but it's actually because Paul has been taught by Gurney and Duncan to fight that way so that his slower, more relaxed, blows are able to push through the personal shields everybody wears. Since Fremen don't have shields, they thought he was disrespecting Jamis during the duel by making it seem like he was only half-heartedly fighting him and he didn't warrant his full effort. I always thought it was a really cool bit of world-building and was surprised it wasn't included in the movie and when Stilgar asks Jessica if Paul is toying with Jamis she just says that he isn't and that he's only reluctant to finish him because he's never killed anyone before.

Dune (published 1960) is to Sci Fi similar to what LoTR (1950s) is to fantasy. Both enormous, slow stories concentrating on world building and lore with millennia long backstories. Both inspired generations of writers in each genre, Dune being the originator of many Sci Fi tropes and LotR the originator of many modern fantasy tropes. Both concerned about ecosystems trashed by industrialisation. Frank Herbert in Dune was concerned with other real world problems: the dangers of charismatic leaders like Stalin, Mao and JFK. Exploitation of the Middle East for oil. Both exceptionally hard to adapt to cinema because of the length and scope of the stories. Villenueve ideally wants to make a trilogy out of Dune and Dune Messiah. Given the first instalment, I think he's going to match Peter Jackson for making the unadaptable into a cinema trilogy classic.

Also, guns are made obsolete by their body shields so blades have become the norm since only slow things can move through the shields. Soldiers are trained to cut slow but with force to stab someone through a shield. And a prequel book explains why there are no computers. There was a war against powerful A.I. so computers were outlawed. The two men with marks on their lower lips are Mentats, basically human computers. They perform all of their high level computations and data storage.
this film was a visual feast in theaters

Shields are good against fast moving objects, even a fast strike is too fast, that’s why most projectile based weapons are obsolete and unused and why melee combat and gas is effective.
Just to put it into context Star Wars was over 10years after these books were written. Lucas stole ideas from dune to create Star Wars. Also guns are not used because of shields. Projectiles faster than a certain speed cannot penetrate the shields. That’s why the bombs “floated” down and destroyed the ships.

"Taking inspiration from" is not what I'd call stealing. Dune wasn't even the first to have a galaxy-spanning civilization. I saw this in IMAX Thursday, amazing. So much better than the 80s one, but that one is fun for other reasons.
Dune: Part 2" was greenlit for October 2023. Dune is already one of the highest-grossing films of 2021.
TMI: In Dunverse, Shai-hulud(a.k.a Sand Worm)'s Mythological Position Is Dragon.(Frank Herbert, The Author Of The Dune Series, Mentioned It Before.)
A beautiful interpretation of the novel. The scenes sacrificed gave room to a deep world full of nuance, detail and intensity. A profound visual and auditory experience on iMax.
To Me, Bagpipes Sound Reminds About Charging To Climax Final Battle, And Sardaukar Chant And Their Language Reminds About Mongol Empire Army...
If you watch the 1980s version, I would recommend going for the Spicediver Fan Edit that cuts out some of the more egregious changes from the book and inserts some of the additional scenes from the extended TV cut; some of these were missing effects (e.g. Fremen eyes), which has also been corrected in the fan edit.

I had a 2000 movie on DVD, when I grown up I wanted to read the original book.

@@Pingkonk There's a Miniseries from 2000 - It's quite book accurate, despite crappy CG
1:07 Correction: It’s NOT a remake, and I really advice you not to actively compare the two movies. They’re very different adaptations if the book.
Part 2 will blow your mind. Also, I highly recommend reading the book.
on the distance weapon comment at 20 m mark. The shields they have stop all FAST moving objects, only slow things get through so hand to hand weapons are needed. you can fire guns at them all day and they will just bounce off

And if a Lasgun is fired on a Shield, both devices blow up in a nuclear explosion. Due to the Universial Ban on nuclear Weapons, all Houses of the Landsrat would automaticly declare extermination War on the Attacker.
I love this movie thank you for reacting to this movie cant wait to watch part 2

The 84 movie did the box so much more viscerally showing what Paul was feeling. The number of Shai-hulud has never been known. I know I'm shouting into a void, but it's Freh*men not free*men.
part 2 has been confirmed for October 2023, I can’t wait!!
As a book person I highly recommend reading book one, (maybe only the first half if you want to have a fresh, expectationless reaction for part 2.) For me, a book person, this film is just about the best possible adaptation I could have asked for.
The world of Caladan was actually filmed in my home country, with the stunning view of the mountains and oceans!
You don't watch movies in theatres? U know the place where movies are actually supposed to be seen?
Honestly, nobody should be watching this until they've seen the movie in a theatre or at least HBOMax. Getting Part 2 of this movie depends on it doing well, and it's fantastic! You're only getting exposure to small important sequences in this movie which will somewhat ruin your experience in the theatre!

My understanding was that for part 2 to be greenlit Dune needs to just do ok in theatres but it needs to do very well on HBO Max. That's the studio's priority right now, I think. Anyways I think the best option will be to first see it on streaming and then in theaters so that the spectacular cinematography doesn't distract you from the story. Or simply go multiple times to the cinema:) It's well worth it.

Je suis tellement fière de Denis Villeneuve, sérieux, il a tellement de talent
THAT WAS DUNE TASTIC
Maybe it's just me, but I would hate seeing that at home for the first time, this movie was made to experienced on a giant cinema screen.
I am so happy i watched this in the theatre it was amazing to see on the big screen. I watched it with one of my friends and she actually just wanted to watch it because of Zendaya and Timothee but she ended up actually liking it too
Yes, Check the Original, Some Famous Actors in that too, including the legendary Sir Patrick Stewart. Interesting that they cut it into Two Parts. "Children of Dune" Is also a good watch in the same universe, Which instead of "A Long Long time ago", Dune is set in a long time yet to come!!! The Original gives a much clearer build up as to what is going on, Very weird hearing some iconic lines come from other actors mouths. Fans have been waiting so So long for this with many half hearted attempts and promises of sequels/remakes till now
Oooooh wait yes you're French Canadian ! French from France here
17:39 Careful how you say that name 21:30 Careful how you say that name
To anybody, I would highly recommend the book series, they are very good. The first book’s sequel, Dune Messiah, is my personal favorite book of all time
so i went to this completely blind and i think its pretty good. i'm now reading the first book haha just so i can understand more
I knew you were french canadian when I heard you pronunce Denis Villeneuve's name :D hi fellow maple syrup enjoyer !
great reaction video tim👏👏👍👍and i have not seen dune yet soo for me it also first time watching the movie dune😊👍but i know this movie have drax from gaurdians of the Galaxy movies(dave bautista) thanos from avengers infinity war/endgame(josh brolin) mj from spiderman far from home(zendaya) kurt goreshter from the ant-man movies(David Dastmalchian) erik selvig from the thor movies(Stellan Skarsgård) aquaman from the movie aquaman(jason momoa) poe dameron from the star wars movies(oscar isaac) captain salazar from the pirates of the carribean franchise(Javier Bardem) and some other awesome cast of actors🎬🎥👌 and tim have a good day💪☀️😎🤙
I SAW IN IMAX TODAY, IT IS INCREDIBLE!
Dune is where Star Wars got a lot of their imagery from. And Warhammer 40000 just straight cannibalized it.
Part two is expected to be released in 2023. It did really well with the box office so some days ago it was revealed there was gonna come a part two it wasn't 100% sure before that. Part one and two is supposed to cover the first book and after that there's maybe gonna come some for the other books but it's so for sure or anything. I'm really excited but also annoyed because i have to wait so long i wish I could forget about the movie until part two comes out😂
I read the book and this movie did not disappoint, though it left out a few things. I love the film though, its great
Dune? Me:Its the guy from fortnite

The poison may not have killed the baron. But judging by how he ended up in need of serious bathing in a healing vat, the poison sure did fuck him up real good ^_^
I LOVED THIS MOVIE!!!!
2nd favorite sci fi movie behind Interstellar for me. cant wait for the rest
Hi! Just so you know coz the film doesn't explain it, the reason they don't have lazers/guns is because you can't use them when fighting with the shields. If I remember the book right it can have a reaction like an explosion. So they have to use close combat weapons whenever shields are involved
I literally just came out of the cinemas watching Dune, and here you are with the reaction video, lol. By the way, Dune, the novel has influenced countless science fiction including Star Wars. The Jedi power or the Force is partially coming from Bene Gesserit’s abilities to manipulate others. Yes, I do want a sequel, so I hope it will do well, however with the time that we are in, that will be tough.
Amazing Movie! I've been a longtime Dune fan. Forget the 1984 movie. It tried to do the whole first book in one movie, left too much out, and made weird changes. The real comparison should be with the 3 part Dune miniseries from 2000 which, like this movie, is very faithful to the book. This movie is basically a big budget remake of Part 1 of the miniseries. Most of the main points are here but the miniseries included even More since it was 5.5 hours long. This new movie covers about half of the book and the first of 3 major story arcs in the book. I'm hoping it does well enough to warrant a trilogy.
Never seen this before
This movie was incredible in IMAX
Now I know what I want for my next birthday coming this month: either the first 'Dune' novel written by Frank Herbert or watching the 2021 film. Either way, it's gonna be exciting. :)
so true he pops up when you search timothee
Timothee Chalamet is the Best Part of the movie💯💯
I would also like to know where to buy coats like that :)
I liked the 1st dune better , just my opinion. Great reaction
I absolutely loved Dune! I planning watching again soon! I like the 80's version but I think for Dune 2021 having 2 parts is a great idea. I am a huge fan of Timothee Chalamet and he was as great as usual in this one. I don't recommend you to watch the previous version because you'll be spoiled.
THe movie has made enough money that part 2 has been given the green light and will be out in 2023.
Heck yes!
Lol I have the same 2 funko pops!!!!
Dune Part II in 2023 and if WB are even kinder to us, then Dune Messiah in 2025 or 2026.
Nice 👍
If you want to see the opposite of the quality of this film , you can watch the Dune from the 80s
I really liked the first hour and a half but the last hour was a bit rough
