Dune: Awakening - Diving Into the Alternate History

Ойындар

The Story Cinematic - The Vision of Paul Atreides, revealed the alternate timeline that Jessica Atreides creates by choosing to give birth to a daughter instead of Paul, beginning a cascading chain of events. Paul’s absence leads to a huge power vacuum into which players will venture, creating their own story in Dune: Awakening.
Dune: Awakening combines the grit and creativity of sandbox survival games with the social interactivity of a large, persistent multiplayer game to create a unique and ambitious Open World Survival MMO.

I'm a little iffy on this alternate canon, but the more I think about it the more necessary it becomes. To give players and their characters agency and the ability to actually make an impact, and not be pigeon-holed into all of their actions/impact being undone by the canonical events of DUNE, DUNE: Messiah, God Emperor of DUNE, etcetera, you would either have to have things stagnate and remain frozen in time, or make significant changes to the story to enable that player agency. Placing DUNE: Awakening within an alternate canon of its own may seem like a cop-out of sorts, but if its expressly done so that players can carve out their own legend within the sands of Arrakis and make them feel as though they're having a tangible influence on the universe, I'm willing to let it slide. No matter the universe, no matter the canon, the saying will still be the same: "The spice must flow."

Always going to be people who dislike anything that moves away from canon, just look at the fanbois that whinge about StarWars and what Disney have 'done' to it. They seem to forget that StarWars is VERY open ended with storylines and you can bet many of those fanbois never read anything past the main six stories that produced Episodes 1 to 6. Also to add, if things like StarWars were stringent in staying in canon, they would never have brought out tabletop roleplaying games for such where the Storyteller creates their own story. You wouldnt be able to make up character for such because you would be stuck playing the core characters from the movie. Also, a lot of stuff written for StarWars by authors have nothing to do with Disney either, those authors wrote for a subject they love.

This sounds amazing... as a single player game, maybe even co-op. As an MMO, I can only see it having a couple good years before it devolves into the same recycled formula over and over again. Especially if they pursue seasonal content. It will go the way of Destiny 2, where they never have enough time to build anything creative, only refresh and reskin... over and over and over...

I also see with the PvP areas such as the desert region where you have many camping just outside the PvE area, however with how they plan on wiping the area clean every X number of weeks it means they cant just camp an area. In the Dune novels, there were at least two other bloodlines extremely close to ALSO having the Kwisatz Haderach. Feyd was primed for it, and Count Fenring was extremely close to himself being a Kwisatz Haderach. I actually think it's pretty brilliant an idea to explore alternate timelines in a universe where precognition explicitly LOCKS THE VIEWED FUTURE INTO EXISTENCE. Seeing what would happen in the Dune universe if history plays itself out differently, and the Bene Gesserit continue to work on their many-millennia-old project, instead producing a different Shortener of the Way. An alternate history where the entire universe isn't held hostage in the precognitive trap Paul unleashed, and Leto II exacerbated to extreme degrees to try and push past forever, is an interesting space in the setting to explore. One that leaves much, much more possibility to shape not just a story, but however many wildly different stories they'd like.

@@rosesareredbutzerglingssti9290 Disagreement with creative choices is not hating. In the book Dr Yueh comes within a hairs breadth of confessing to Jessica. Had he confessed then the Harkonnen attack would have been thwarted, Leto would have remained Duke and Paul would never have gone into the desert to become leader of the Fremen and drink the waters of life. A subtle change resulting in the same alternate game scenario without taking a sledgehammer to the lore of the book by gender swapping the primary character.
