I have read the books, and watched the 1980s movie. Seriously, Christian’s getting upset about the white veiled dress is ridiculous. In the books, the Feenan people’s culture and language and religion is based on Islam and how they were taken from their original planet and bought to Dune to harvest the spice . In the book, the Feenan women wear hijab style clothes in their home communities, very suitable for desert environments.

dune head here: you’re almost there with the lore im very proud. the fembot pull was extra apt for this movie *because* of the “computer war” not in spite of it. seeing humans become their own computer via the mentats is why they pulled this. also the stillsuits are why you’re seeing looks that accelerate that concept of an ultra structured stuff too. as for rebecca ferguson, the reason for the patchwork vintage lace is a reference to funeral attire because the lady jessica becomes a death dealer in her choices to push the her bloodline as the prophetic messiah which spells death for millions. her little cult’s decision to deus ex machina themselves a foothold on arakis was bad enough but she manipulated it with her whole chest with generational consequences for the people there.

She was one of them even before she was born as her consciousness merged with the consciousnesses of all previous Reverend mothers when Jessica transformed the Water of Life. So i think white look of Anya is actually referencing the black look of Reverend mother Gaya Elena Mohiyam in first movie. And its is white, as the opposite of black, since Alia opposes herself to the Bene Gesserit, being one of them I apologize for my English, it's not my native language

But then second of all, why is that not „offensive“ or „problematic“, but had it been inspired by a hijab it would’ve been? Neither should be imo. People need to fkn chill. Women in the western world were wearing head coverings and veils well into the XX century. Catholic nuns still wear them now (and the fit of the dress is a lot closer to them than a hijab), brides wear them, old women in european villages still wear them. That is not cultural appropriation, if only people had just a tiny bit more knowledge of western history before they went around throwing criticism around.

Anya’s outfit is clearly inspired by the women in the movie, she is promoting the movie after all. The women’s clothing, face tattoos and head veils were clearly inspired by Arabic and Kurdish cultures. We’re not saying Arabic and Kurdish people are the only ones who wear head veils, the point is that Anya’s outfit in inspired by these cultures, and women of these cultures get ridiculed when wearing the same thing.

There was criticism around for a reason. As you said, there are other groups and cultures who wear head coverings but the reason why people were upset is because it’s practically only Muslim women who are persecuted for it. And considering the themes of the movie and the political happenings of the world, the “backlash” of the look was completely deserved and warranted. Why you people love to pretend that hijabi women don’t get constantly mocked and harassed, I’ll never know

Anya's white dress can be interpreted in so many different ways. If it was inspired by nun attire, well, it makes perfect sense since she is the daughter of a Bene Gesserit, who are like these ultra cool nuns lol - and also, she will move on to be known as Saint Alia of the Knife, so sainthood, nuns, it all ties together. But also, it kinda looks like she's being born? The head emerging from out of the fabric, like a baby being born (which also makes sense, since she's an embryo in the whole movie).

I mean absolutely, yes. But I think the outcry was more specifically about how Muslim women are quite literally persecuted in France for wearing headscarves (where headscarves are illegal), whereas a seemingly secular white woman gets to wear a headscarf and it’s high fashion, chic. It’s about the disproportionate discrimination towards POC women. Like if Anya Taylor Joy wore that to the Paris premiere she wouldn’t be arrested and/fined, but if a POC woman wore it just for fun and fashion in Paris she would be. That’s the big critique. Less so about Muslim cosplay etc., although that was a part of the outcry.

Are we sure the bene gesserit are a nun order though? Again, Frank Herbet takes A LOT from Shia Islam. Shias believe that the prophet's successor is from his daughter's bloodline which is known as "bene hashim". To me, it's clear what they are. It's interesting he uses the mother's bloodline (Jessica's) for the savior, same as Shia Islam. This same bloodline in Shiasm has the Mahdi (as used exact wording in the Dune books) or the savior. Idk there is a TON of layers but to dismiss that Herbet didn't take like 99% of Shia Islam literally verbatim terminology is being just ignorant. Ignorant in the way that you don't mean harm, but just don't know. Anya looked good though! People need to relax.

  • @MB-yl9hm

The Muslim hijab/khimar was likely based off of the habit worn by Orthodox nuns throughout the Byzantine Empire called an apostolnik. Anya's outfit makes sense as the Bene Gesserit ultimately function similarly to a convent. The title of "Reverend Mother" is just the Dune version of a Mother Superior. To be fair, women throughout Central/Southern Asia have always worn some sort of scarf head covering, like the Hindu dupatta, because it's simply a practical garment in hot arid climates. But there is evidence to suggest that the hijab is inspired by the Christian apostolnik specifically and not just the general fashion of the region. A lot of cities in Saudi Arabia were predominantly Christian for centuries before the Muslim conquests, and the oldest churches in the region are specifically from Eastern sects from the early Byzantine period (~4th century). The prescription for women wearing the hijab is based on Surah Al-Ahzab, wherein Mohammed observes the harassment of the women of Medina in 622 AD by the Banu Qaynuqa tribe. He tells the women to draw their cloaks over their bodies in order to be recognized as "virtuous" so that the rival tribesmen will no longer sexually harass them. To be recognized as virtuous is different from simply covering up for the sake of just being hidden from men. This suggests that most tribes in the area were aware of the Orthodox nuns in the region and understood that their habits were meant to signify their relation with God, that is to say, that they were virtuous. The women of Medina aren't just told to make their bodies imperceptible, they are told to look like "virtuous" women (presumably nuns) in order to dissuade the rival tribesmen from viewing them as sexually available objects to harass.

@@karpathian_slaw7928 The attire itself isn't inherently insensitive because the designer's inspiration didn't stem from SWANA/Islamic culture. However, the outfit is being worn in the context of DUNE, a film influenced by SWANA and Islamic culture in the 20th century, rather than the other cultures you mentioned. Were it not for DUNE, it's unlikely this attire would have been chosen. In the video, we see actors donning garments reflective of DUNE's aesthetic, and Anya Taylor-Joy is styled similarly. Thus, the stylists are aligning their choices with DUNE's aesthetic, which indirectly draws from SWANA and Islamic influences. Also, the ongoing political unrest in France and the Middle East adds another layer of sensitivity to the situation. All of these factors contribute to the insensitivity of the outfit choice. SWANA/Muslim individuals often find themselves dismissed or patronized when expressing disapproval of cultural appropriation or disrespect. This dismissal is exacerbated by the portrayal of SWANA/Muslims in Western media, where they are often dehumanized in news coverage and entertainment. It's important to understand the reasons behind the anger felt by SWANA/Muslim individuals and to strive to listen and improve our actions accordingly.

the fembot suit also resembles the fremen stillsuits (which themselves are like full-body armor against the harshness of the desert) and the cutout in the white stepahne rolland is similar to the emperor's sigil. brilliant method dressing overall. another one for the books!

My interpretation of Rebecca Ferguson wearing Olivier Theyskens: the Bene Gesserit are called "witches" by other characters because of their physical and mental conditioning. Her gothic look could be a nod to that.

I see a thematic link between Zendaya's suit and the fremen stilsuits. They're both armour that protects the inhabitant (the stilsuits protect from the desert), and what they wear to battle. Chani is a warrior.

Luke!! Wow!! You **nailed** that architectural reference with the Salk Institute. Because there’s another architect whose work looks a *lot* like Louis Kahn’s, with that sculptural poured concrete, and they used his work as a location in the film. His name is Carlo Scarps, and the scenes with the emperor and his daughter (I.e. Christopher Walken and Florence Pugh) at home were filmed at this couple’s tomb outside of Venice, Italy-those walls with interlocking circles in particular.
