Duncan McCallum. Sport climber & wall designer
Duncan McCallum has been a big part of the Scottish climbing scene for years, designing walls, presenting TV programmes and climbing hard.
He’s the founder of The Ledge climbing gym in Inverness which is where we recorded this. Now aged sixty two, we sat down to talk motivation, training regime and some of the big injuries he has had to cope with, including a heart attack.
This interview forms part of a video I made with Duncan for The Older Athlete Series and you can also find this full episode on KZread

Thanks Paul
I've just turned 73 and get intermittent AF. I've learnt to manage AF through wearable's monitoring of my pulse, especially when doing intense oxygen demand stuff including gardening. Its disappointing to being in this phase of life, and its annoying whenever I dwell on the fact that my first AF episode occurred 2 weeks after my first Covid injection. This series is both helpful and re-assuring.
Cracking interview
Thanks for the video. Duncan has an inspiring story - it would have been so easy for him to stop or do less. As a 67 year old, I entered my very first cycling race last weekend. It made it clear to me that I need to improve my hill work to stay with a bunch I can easily keep up with on the flat. That’s going to take some structured and doubtless sweaty work. Keep up the good work.
Like many other 50 somethings, I’ve really enjoyed this series. It’s a reminder that with discipline and focus we can lead very active and fulfilling lives. Keep inspiring and producing quality content 👍
Thanks for sharing! It was not only interesting but also very motivating! Thanks again!
Excellent video, thank you

Very interesting - and challenges my tendency to settle for where I am and what I feel lucky to have left of my performance when running and cycling in my mid seventies. But it occurs to me that you and Duncan both (rightly) consider yourselves athletes. That's the purpose that drives you. I have never thought of myself as an athlete. I am someone who jogs and cycles in the hope to be fit enough to enjoy being active and in good health for as long as possible. Do I really need structured training to do that? That's the question this video has posed for me. Thanks for posting.

I honestly remember the first time someone used the A word for me and I wondered who they were talking about. I really don’t. But as a race director recently said to me, when all the others your age stop doing stuff, you ARE the athlete. 🤣 May I recommend Dr Peter Attia’s book ‘Outlive’? Some structure helps any and all of us be time efficient. He advises any and everyone - not athletes - into their later years.
I'm 63 in a couple of months and still climbing. People tell me it is amazing but it is really no big deal. Too many people in their 50s and 70s are victims of low expectations both from others and from themselves. We don't suddenly become fragile at 55 or whatever.
