i was laid off from work about 2 weeks ago. I had a long career as an AutoCAD craftsman. I recently came across this channel. I honestly think I want to scrap for a living. Mike seems soo free and happy. i also want to have the feeling of freedom and enjoyment with what i do. i am just as excited as he is when he pulls up the the trash cans lol!! I think some one upstairs wanted me to see this! going out today to do my first scarp run. i might never go back to a desk.

When you go to retire, you can't. Self employment doesn't really pay into a retirement program, and you won't make millions to save or invest. I wood however go scraping til you get your next drafting position, but don't do any bragging, there are people that will drag you down. Keep your day job.

That's exactly why I love a channel like this one! There is so little nowadays that is actually trash, if you compost your food scrappity scraps, and recycle all you can, we find that we don't need weekly trash service!!!!! Then you've got the creative aspect of it....a bench topper from the treadmill, that's using the nogan!!! Beautiful suggestion!! Thanks for sharing!

@@carolynmott6672 I go to the dumpsters for cabinet shops and furniture places, pull their "trash" and turn it into heirloom custom furniture and other stuff, little jewelry boxes, wooden toys, wood prices are so crazy!! I also made kind of a signature style of table tops when gluing up 35 pieces for them from 6 different types of wood. These days, dumpsters hold all sorts of treasure if you have just a little bit of creativity in you!!!! Another good SECRET!!!! SHHHHH....... I'll go to floral shops and pull tons of flowers!!! My mom worked doing arrangements when I was a kid so I'm pretty good at it too, I make a dozen arrangements and give em to lots of different people and places to bring some cheer to faces! Folks think it's a dirty thing but specialist places like floral shops and furniture places have nothing but that stuff in the dumpster, it's not dirty, it's free!! Less for the dang landfills while we're at it......

I knew of a young waste mgmt company owner who inherited the company and married. The young wife wasn't really keen on what he owned - she certainly wanted no direct part of it. The guy decided that he would open a thrift store to offer for sale some of the stuff the trucks picked up and he wanted the new wife to run it. When she saw what was coming through the store, she was apparently hooked from that point. She was at the piles straight off the trucks, digging through, looking at what they just hauled in. She had to be warned several times a day by the staff to watch out for the trucks. A front end loader once pushed a sway car out of the way in the yard and she started screaming cause she was inside it and didn't know what was going on.
Scrap gods smile on you, Mike!!! It is amazing to watch you find these loads of scrap.

Hey Mike , If you ever get a treadmill that's busted but the motor is still good ,it makes an excellent generator . Mount your wind blades on it ,mount on a pole and you can power a couple of outdoor lites.
I do woodworking, the way I like to roll, I go and hit up the dumpsters at cabinet shops and other related places, you would be shocked at how much wood and good, BIG pieces of high quality plywood I can pull from those places!!! The wood is only 3 inches wide, at most, sometimes I get lucky and pull big chunks! I carefully mill and glue it together to make table tops or box sides, bottoms/tops etc, it makes for a really cool look and it also makes for totally FREE materials!!! When you can sell a table for hundreds of dollars after paying nothing but your time to build it, works out rather well!!!! We've become so dang wasteful lately and it's very cool to see that there is a pretty big interest in dumpster diving! Take it back y'all!!! Take it back!!!!! Every little bit counts!!!
The happy sounds of the scavenger!

@@jasonflay8818 Scrap dealers take advantage of everyone. He got lucky finding motors on one night that will help pay for his gas and time all those nights he found nothing of value. They pay only pennies per pound for unstriped thin gauge wire. Stripping heavy wire pays more but is very time consuming. Many restaurants have a starting pay of fifteen dollars an hour now. If someone else is throwing it in the trash, it has almost no value.
