0:03 - 0:09 The funny part is when Mrs. Jumbo and the rest of the elephants are up and leaving their cart of the train to get to work, Dumbo clinging to his mother's tail, and he came out of their cart of the train, but he's tripping and falls on the gangplank, and feels like Dumbo had a little fun as he's bouncing off the end of the gangplank from their cart of the train to the ground during a storm at night. NOTE: I remember watching this 1941 Disney movie when I was a kid.

People continually point to the Crows for being among the unfortunate catalog of racist content in Disney’s library (even though they were actually pivotal in the film’s final act). This song however seems to have some undertones as well: the workers appear dark skinned (without acknowledging how dark it already is in this storm), and some of what they say insinuates racist comments from the Ringmaster.

Makes me glad that I never understood what they were singing when I was a kid. So many things flew right over my head as a child and (despite what the common opinion today is) I grew up with parents that wanted to protect us from those kinds of racist attitudes and conceptions from that point in time. God blessed us in so many ways and I fear that a lot of children nowadays are in a lot more danger of having their minds corrupted because of the Woke culture we live in now. It hurts my heart.

In some words in the Internet from a channel I will not say to avoid criticism: 'In a Disney early history filled with racism, this song might take the cake. A group of faceless black men singing about slaving until they were almost dead, but not worrying about when they get paid, because when they do, they just throw their pay away. And are totally fine because they are "happy-hearted roustabouts"? One of the lines is and is quoted by many people, "Grab that rope, you hairy ape." Sometimes a simple, "That's Racist." just isn't enough.

  • @illudak5071

If it's racist, why show the elephants beside these men, doing the same work? If we're meant to pity our poor main character Dumbo working in the rain, mud, and dark, then why not the human workers next to him, too? "Oh, but the lyrics are racist!" It's obvious calling them _"happy_ hearted roustabouts" while they're clearly miserable means the song is sarcastic. Are these workers _really_ what the song says, or is that just what's said _of_ them? Are we supposed to take the side of the boss shouting racial slurs, or the workers? "Oh, but the portrayal is racist!" How? The workers aren't shown as stupid, lazy, or cowardly--many offensive stereotypes of the time. They're hardworking, competent, and stoic. There are no racist stereotypical physical features. The most offensive portrayal of a human in this film is the big-eared redheaded white boy caricature who picks on Dumbo. This isn't _Song of the South,_ which ignores actual living conditions and has the workers be happy with their lot. To portray exploitation, and to portray the victims of exploitation as sympathetic, is not racism.

Or, he’s a hybrid of the two: Mrs. Jumbo, his mother, is an Indian Elephant like the rest of the circus elephants. But, Mr. Jumbo, his father, is an African Elephant. Which, in addition to being a larger species, also has even larger ears. (Almost the size of its head.) So, Jumbo Junior (which is Dumbo’s legal name) is an Indian Elephant with an African Elephant’s ears. At least, anatomically speaking.

Now, unlike the last video I just watched, which was a previous scene in the film (in fact, I think it was the previous scene in the film), which was titled “Stormy Night” and ended right as it started raining at nightfall but showed a bright clear day the rest of the video, THIS video is the one that should be called Stormy Night, as it ACTUALLY takes place during a storm at night.

Is this a "racist scene?" Or is it simply a scene depicting a time when racism was more overt? Should we not strive to distinguish between the two? Is the film "12 Years a Slave" racist? Or does it simply depict a time when racism was more overt? I feel we have become far too eager to label things as racist or maliciously motivated. Despite academic literacy being more widespread than any other time in human history, it seems rationality and critical thinking has not followed suit. To all those wasting their precious time labelling this scene as racist: there are REAL problems that still exist in this world. Go find the ones that matter to you, do what you can to fix them, and make the world a better place. Empty virtue signaling and grandstanding in the comment section of a KZread video doesn't actually help anyone or make the world a better place to be in. In fact, it probably makes it a bit worse. Not to mention, you're most likely wrong - as many of us are when swepped up by the knee-jerk outrage of mobs. Just enjoy the scene. It you can't enjoy it, hold your tongue, and go somewhere else.
