Dumb Decisions: The STUPIDEST ENDING EVER | Georgia Tech @ Miami (2023)
Well... you already knew this one was coming
When the Miami Hurricanes and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets played each other and Miami was leading by three with under 40 seconds left and the Yellow Jackets having no timeouts, conventional wisdom would say to take a knee in that situation to end the game, right? Well, Miami head coach Mario Cristobal did not do that. Spoiler alert- it backfired pretty badly

As a lifelong Georgia Tech fan (and now alum), this was such a fantastic ending! I had given up after Miami got that 1st down with 2 minutes left, and I walked upstairs to change out of the jersey I was wearing. When I walked back down to see the game end, I saw the ball in the arms of one of our defenders and thought, "There's no way that just happened! Why didn't they just take a knee?" We still had to go 74 yards in 26 seconds, but at least we had a shot. And when Haynes King found Christian Leary wide open for the game-winning touchdown, I fell to the floor in overwhelming joy and hysterical laughter! "HOW DID WE JUST SCORE!?!? IT WAS OVER!!! THEY SHOULD HAVE JUST TAKEN A KNEE!!" I'll take it, especially after that humiliating loss to Bowling Green the week before. Hopefully Brent Key has us going in the right direction, and we can start being a serious football team again. Go Jackets!

I actually checked JG8 to see if you'd done a college "Dumb Decisions" on this, and lo and behold, it appeared while I was watching one I'd missed a month ago. The Miami OC said he was the one who was actually calling those plays, but it is astonishing to me that neither Cristobal, nor the OC, or apparently any other Miami coach, realized "hey, we don't need to do anything but take a knee three times." This is in the pantheon of dumb decisions, in any pro sport. This is John McNamara not getting Bill Buckner off the field kind of dumb.

@@andrewpadaetz5549 Oh, it was even worse than you made it sound. Gibson not only called that play, but threatened QB Joe Pisarcik that he'd cut him if he didn't run the play and took a knee instead. But there was still the idea in '78 that taking a knee to end games wasn't "sporting." Gibson believed that himself and that was his excuse. If you go undefeated in the ACC, you're going to make the playoffs-Jaguar, October 10th, 2023
Turned this game off after the last Miami first down, thinking mathematically there was no way for GT to comeback so it wasn’t worth watching since I had no dog in the fight. This is a great example of how making good / correct decisions is only an option, not forced
I read somewhere that if a team is leading, has the ball, there is less than 40 seconds left, and the opposing the team has no timeouts, there is a 99.9% chance that the team with ball wins the game. Miami decided to try for 0.1%...and succeeded.
'If I had a nickel for every time Mario Christable screwed up a game by not taking a knee, I'd have two nickles!'....Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha
Can we talk about the defensive play calling by miami on GTs miracle win? IMO it’s as bad as the decision to not kneel. Last play snaps from the 50 with 10 seconds left no TOs. Sure you don’t want them to get into FG range but an FG puts it in OT where Miami is going to win most of the time. You just can’t let them score a TD and somehow a GT WR gets behind miamis entire def? They should have had 4 DBs standing on the goal line

"Hey Rock, why doesn't Kaep come play in the XFL?" "He doesn't want anything to do with us U guys, we don't take knees"
The only possible explanation you could *ever* have for doing this is your running back had like 98 yards and you wanted to give him his first 100 yard game (and that was *not* the case here). And for the Miracle at the Meadowlands, the QB kneel down wasn't a recognized play until 1985. Before then, you had to run a legit play because the whistle wouldn't blow until the QB got hit.
UNLV-Baylor from Sep 11, 1999. End of game.
I'm glad he addressed MIracle at the Meadowlands. I was wondering how this ranked with that and I was going to post a comment about it until the very end he addressed it.

The biggest victim in all of this was that assistant coach with the handlebar mustache. A handlebar mustache looks cool when you're winning, but when you lose like this, it just looks downright silly.
I don't understand how highly paid head coaches, who are, one assumes, highly prepared in every area of the game, can screw up something as simple as basic clock management. They're coaching major college (or pro) football, which very few people can do, yet screw up decisions that every person watching the game could make correctly. It's amazing to me.

I wouldn't count on that. These things can go one of two ways. If those guys still believe in their head coach, they're going to clobber UNC. They will go to war to vindicate him. If they don't believe in Cristobal now, you're going to be correct. I remember the year the Cowboys won their last Super Bowl and Barry Switzer was the coach. He went for a fourth down deep in his own territory and lost a game he might have won by punting. But after it was over, every man on the team they asked defended Switzer. They still believed in him, and saw it as he'd shown confidence in them and they had failed, not him. I told a friend, "Switzer lost that game, but he just won the Super Bowl. Wait and see." Dallas didn't lose again that season.

If you go undefeated in the acc you make the playoffs is someone gonna tell him
This was dumber that Derek Fooley's struggles with counting to 11 or Botch Jones' teams struggling to score with a first-and-goal from the 1.
The *OOOOOOOOOONLY*, and I mean only, slight arguement I could make is that he's wanting to run the ball so they don't have to snap the ball right on 1 second left. But even then, a delay of game means nothing but a few more seconds of gametime. And if you do end up with, let's say, 43 seconds left after taking the knee on 3rd, just have the QB run around a little before kneeing it the last time.
I'm impressed you stretched this to 14:51
Not sure that guys name but the guy near the coach has a super cool mustache
In addition to other considerations when the knee goes down in college football the play is automatically over. The player with the ball doesn’t have to get touched, unlike the NFL.

The notion that they hadn't taken a knee yet this season is kinda irrelevant. Of the previous four games, their closest win was 15 points. I'm guessing Miami probably had some second stringers in there. Also, it's not exactly a play that requires a lot of practice. Unless you're pinned up against your own goal line, taking a knee requires fielding the snap and going to the ground.
