I remember going on the Haunted House when I was 12 years old in 1994 and it scared the pants off me! Really wish they'd never done the Duel overlay. I would love to see a return to the original but I doubt that is marketable. I just wish UK parks would maintain their classics properly and keep them fresh rather than letting them rot for decades and then have to do something drastic. I hope I'm wrong but I predict lots of screens which will inevitably break and some sort of IP they can push as new attraction. I think the ride hardware is fantastic and has proven itself to be a fantastic queue-gobbler over the years.

I was there on saturday went on duel towards the end of the day. I forgot how long the ride is which is a added bonus, but the start/entrance is embarrassing bad. No wonder its time to upgrade its something youd expect from a travelling fair not alton towers. The u.k need to put more attention to detail like the us

Alton Towers have really gone to town with the closing of duel, making changes less than 24 hours later is pure dedication. They could have just locked the doors and left it for months but the fact they've gone to the effort of putting up the property repossessed theming just shows the love and excitement alton towers has for this ride to be redone. I can't wait to see whats in store. 👍👍👍

I would've made the unnatural activity into a scarezone round the ride place, serving as reason for the closure, and a hint to it's future towards scarefest's end.

The monorail music ending exactly at the same time you wrapped up the intro was the most satisfying thing ever

It was perfect timing!

I never got to experience the Haunted House so Duel was my whole life as an enthusiast. I've always known Duel. It's been quite a ride during the history of this ride and I cannot wait to be back for another year when the ride opens (but there is hopefully a Scarefest visit before 2023 hits)

Im going to Alton Towers next May, I hope the new version is open by then!

The original Haunted House was a masterpiece, very dark indeed, those who have only ridden Duel will not understand. I was 7 years old when I rode it in 1992, Walking through the entrance Graham Smarts original score hit you hard, you could feel the bass reverberating in your chest, the original artwork had depth and quality, original family portraits throughout the entrance were lifelike beautifully rendered, no need for silly guns and ridiculous targets plastered all over the place, this was no cartoon cut out that was to become Duel. The whole place was dark, loud and disorientating, many kids broke down in tears and had to turn back through fear, so not exactly a family ride, I just hope Alton Towers can see that this adds to the appeal, restore it back to the original with a few new suprises!

It indeed sounded like one of the Best dark rides back then. If only I was born to actually have ridden it before the Zombies and Blasters. I really hope they revert it back to the Haunted House too with a couple of new things, but keeping all the old soundeffects, old lighting, and the Music By Graham Smart. Though it's sad to see most people nowadays want all of the old theming ripped out for something completely new whilst saying to bring back the Haunted House. It can't be the Haunted House without the sets and props from The Haunted House! I deeply hope they leave all the Original 1992 scenes intact but freshen them up back to their original state in terms of lighting, sound effects, maintenance, animatronics working at full force, etc. With the rest of the ride, have something new there, but there aren't many scenes that was changed drastically when it became Duel outside of the Giants Lair, the Skeleton Corridor, and the finale. Replace those scenes with something new, but keep the rest and restore them back to their former glory. End of story, no fancy screens or realistic Animatronics with a serious look.

Yes it was truly amazing back in the early 90s when it opened. It was covered by the press, Saturday morning kids tv etc in a big way. The whole thing was very very similar to the Haunted House / Hotel in Disneyworld. It was also the first big budget Haunted House / Ghost Train style ride in the Uk. There were many cheesy Ghost Trains and Haunted houses at traveling fairs and Blackpool, but this was the first one that was done properly, big budget and American style. The que through the woods was well thought out and it stopped you getting bored waiting as it used to have long lines to get in over the first ten years. The ghost train inside was epic, the music was incredible, really atmospheric and so popular that you could buy it on tape and disk in the themed shop when you came out! There were flying ghostly skulls, stuff that went over head looking like real ghosts, along with the sounds that wrapped all around you. There was a rotating tunnel, giant spiders and huge graveyard. Everything in it moved, lit up or jumped out at you with sound effects. I have never been on a ghost train as good as this one since. When we visited, and we used to go each year, we would go round and round and ride it as many times as we could. The little booth kiosk outside used to sell food, haunted spooky themed sweets and snacks, ice creams and burgers etc. You could spend a couple of hours in the whole section, going through the wood, riding the ghost train, then buying keepsakes. And then sit out on benches by the ride, eating a burger or ice cream and checking out your purchases, while drinking in the atmosphere. Alton towers really spent money on getting this ride right and put in massive effort on the theming and extras to make the whole section a unique experience. It was massively popular for years, and Dual was just a cheap way of doing a retheme, they also let it all fall into disrepair with the animatronics missing parts, breaking down or just going missing. After the first five to ten years as the Haunted House / Gloomy wood they just let it start to fall apart. Even the wood was not maintained or weeded, swept of pine needles etc. It was such a shame as what they have there is unique in all of the Uk, with its theme and setting. It could be made as good as it was back in the early nineties with modern up to date technology. They have the money to do so. If they did I would be tempted to go back and see it again. That and Nemesis....even though I am now 50 something...seeing him talk about thirty years having gone past, and knowing you were there when it opened and was first so popular puts time into perspective....

So happy that you got one last ride. It was my 1st ride of the season this year strangely! So hyped for what's to come next year...think MMM have some surprises up their sleeves! There's so much to come that it's hard to keep up.

Talking of the original brings back so many childhood memories. I was 6 when I first got on Haunted Mansion at Disneyland in 1990....2 years later The Haunted House opened and I remember being just as scared and blown away. Shows how great the original was through a child's eyes.

@@ThemeParkWorldwide I only went on it once as the original Haunted House, I was quite little at the time and terrified by it! When it was re-themed to Duel, it didn't seem very scary... more just fun. Will be interesting to see what they do to it. On another note, has Enterprise gone for good, or is it's annual maintenance taking longer than usual? I looks to be in a really sorry state, when you see it from Oblivion. Finally, what's happening to Hex? It seems to have only been open a handful of times, during the weekend this season. Although I almost know the story by heart, I still really enjoyed it. The only 42 seat Vekoma Madhouse!

I hope they keep the facade that you enter through as it's really well done. Very excited to see what happens there now.

Also, forgot to mention this, if anyone wants to pick up a Duel Magnet, make sure you go to Towers Trading as they have a different type of magnet to Spooks’r’Us. The one is TT is a metal magnet in the shape of the duel logo and headstone while the one in SRU is a plastic magnet with the duel logo just printed on (the one in the video).

I think Emily has lots of potential for a storyline and she is underused in the theme, the fact that she says ‘this is my house’ makes it sound likely. The shop also DESPERATELY needs updating as it doesn’t really match the ride. Very exiting!

Out of all the videos I have watched of yours, this is my favourite. I was 12 when The Haunted House opened and it was my first real exposure to what a theme park could be, as opposed to “just” rides. It fuelled my imagination and love for horror, resulting in a career in writing. This ride started it all. Now, at 12, my daughter gets to experience a similar excitement as we wait together for the new incarnation. The fact you captured the doors closing was a great, and a significant moment for me. Thank you.

I went on the Haunted House the year it opened. It was truly amazing. I’d never been on a dark ride like it at the time. The original soundtrack as you queued built up such a sense of foreboding. The portraits were super creepy as well, the Duel replacements were not nearly as good. Excited to see what they do with it now. I’d like to see it have them same theme but updated with more modern effects but not too many screens.

I literally visited on 4th of September and went on this. So lucky to experience it for the final time.

That was hilarious when the guy was trying to close the doors and everyone decided to bundle rush on to the last ride it was like something put of monty python 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. It a shame that its gone but I'm definitely looking forward to what they will do duel thank you shaun for all the vlogs 👍

Nice editing at the end once the doors closed. LOL at all the people running in at the last minute. Looking forward to seeing what AT do with the ride. Hopefully like you say a return to the Haunted House but with updated effects.

The original haunted house had proper scares, and it was brilliant! I really hope they take it back to that, but I have a horrible feeling it will be toned down to make it more family friendly.

I can’t wait to see what they do! It’s always been duel for me, but I’d LOVE to see a more intense haunted house at Alton Towers

So many great nostalgic memories of Duel.

I used to be terrified of the original Haunted House as a small child. I used to close my eyes the whole way through whilst clinging to my dad and older sister (I always sat in the middle where I was "protected"). The way you enter what looks like a real house, into the dusty decrepit hallway with paintings of the family that presumably used to live there always felt so real and genuinely haunted. But somehow Duel removed the scariness of it all... On my last ride in May, I took your advice and left the blaster holstered, I enjoyed it a lot more. I can't wait to see what they do with this ride.

Also, you probably know there's a dark little alcove to the left just as you enter the station room. I remember once an actor was hiding there and gave us a surprise scare... needless to say, I would always scan that area thoroughly thereafter before walking past! So many memories.

Great report . sad I couldn't make it for one last ride ! Although I did go around about a dozen times on a wet quiet midweek day earlier in the year, and did think its ready for a refit... Lets hope its goes back to being a quality scary ride :-)

It was funny watching people rush to get one last ride..sad to see it go.. looking forward to seeing what comes next.

My favourite memories of Duel are from the year they had live scare actors in the ride itself during scarefest, that was amazing.

Duel takes up a HUGE amount of land and not many people know this. Imagine they remove it all for a new big ride

This is so sad, I’ve had so many great memories of that ride, from when it broke down and my cousins where terrified to my friends and I re riding loads to beat our high scores. I’m still exited to see what it is replaced by! 😁

Hi, I have no idea if this happened to lots of people, but did you get stuck by the vicar/ priest? Our carriage in duel broke down when me and my partner went, but I was on the left, so I was stuck on the side where the creepy priest model was 😱 lol, hope its amazing when finished.

Always the first ride I go on when I go every year and along the path through gloomy woods, love Duel so much been the high score champion for 5 years out of all my friends and boyfriend this year haha, can't wait to see what they do especially with the outlet at the front as I never got to try the nitrogeenie ice cream when it was there, hope they add that hinted storyline to it and a preshow

even though it was a bit overpriced, i do miss having nitrogenie outside of Duel. The ice cream was some of the best and most delicious and was such a nice place to stop, especially at scarefest when the alton ancestors would perform in the area infront of Duel.

Hopefully the overhaul keeps the current soundtrack and makes the ride more legitimately scary, and has a good backstory. That's all I want!

I never got to experience The Haunted House, because I was actually born the year of the re-theme, however, I’ve only rode it once because the ride was very much bland to me, it looked pretty, but that was about it. I think this re-theme is long awaited, and I’m super ecstatic to see what they do to it! Great vid as always!

As I say in a comment above, it never used to be bland. It was epic when it was first opened. The woodland que was full up and people piling in waiting for hours to get on. It was always busy outside in that section as well, due to the food kiosk. All of that was left to decay last time I saw it and was closed. It needs to be brought up to date and go back to how it was when new. There were crowds attracted to this area like Nemesis and Smiler etc. It seems strange for me to see it now in 2023, so empty and run down and deserted. When I used to go to Alton Towers back in the early 90s - 2000 this are was always really busy with people....

I'm really hoping it'll be made into an amazing haunted house! They have the room in that building to make it one of the very best dark rides in the world! Aslong as they don't make it kid friendly like gangsta granny 😢

My guess is that since we've had a lot of Hints of it being reverted back to the Haunted House, those 6 months will be some scenes being replaced, while the rest is a HUGE Restoration project, such as fixing the ride system, repainting props to their original look, new lighting and speakers, cleaning sets to make them look as clean as ever, fixing mechanics since they're really slow nowadays, and a few small enhancements to the ride in certain areas. I doubt they would gut the Original theming of they want it back as The Haunted House.

@@louiswright8282 I hope they add water sprayers that squirt as you go past. This would make an amazing jump scare.The water could be coloured red so it appears your being splattered with blood. I know Merlin can do this. Nemesis has red water, likewise does the waterfall opposite the original entrance to Vampire at Chessington World Of Adventures. In fact the waterfall at Chessington is called Blood Falls.

Thanks for documenting this end of an era event. Like you I hope that the interactive guns go and this becomes the quintessential spooky haunted house it should be/was. New storyline, new soundtrack and some awesome new effects! 👻

Gutted it closed on my son’s first day at high school, and my first day back to work after our Spanish theme park trip (first time at Parque Warner, Parque de Attractiones and Terra Mitica and second trip to PortAventura!), so I couldn’t arrange to be there! Been looking forward to your video though. I loved old and new versions of the ride but have ridden far more in the last 2 years than ever before so will REALLY miss this next year. I’m sure I’m going to love whatever they do with it.

Hope the new ride is themed around Emily Alton and some of the portraits within the ride itself. Can't wait to see what they do it in the future.

I can remember opening year for the Haunted House, the first few years the graveyard was in full use, yes, actual queues for the ride. It was an absolutely brilliant dark ride, easily my favourite at the time. Then along came Duel and the B&M zombies with lazer guns and it was ruined. I hope it's restored back into a World class dark ride

Would love to see a permanent walk through haunted House with live actors. A bit of scarefest all year round. Remember going through one while on holiday in Spain many many years ago and the experience has always stook with me

Classic loads of memories as a teenager visiting the park in the 90s and this year got to share it with my 1st born who loved it at 4 years old and went on it 5times on the bounce hope they do a good job on it a modern haunted house with the right investment would be amazing and I think the park needs a few new rides adding 👍

Having been on it as dual and it’s original form, I always preferred the original. But the best bit was always the Dolls house with Emily Alton and the music for it was really haunting.

They should make it the scariest haunted house in the UK

We were there on the 5th! First ride we did. Glad to see it go really! I'd like to see something along the lines of Valhalla or a haunted water ride. Oh when we came off the operator said something about a Jamanji ride replacing Duel, thought I'd let you know! Xxx

I have ridden duel is the dark ride I have rode the most been riding it for over 15 years now and cannot wait to see what it becomes, lots of memories of it remember seeing all the effects working although the duel is over it will be back in a new form

This was very interesting, I’ve never actually been to Alton Towers, I’ve always been a funhouse, haunted ride enthusiast, Duel’s ride facade is incredible, I really hope they keep this amazing facade be enhancing it, It would be amazing to see some form of a 3D simulation attraction like ratatouille or something like that would do the park justice, This is soooo exciting and intrigued especially Alton Towers time frame with a new project for a time scale of 6months do you think that’ll be enough time for a complete overhaul transformation Shawn, I love the anticipation build up for the doors closing the very last time where everyone was running in for the very last ride lol 😆 I wish Alton Towers the best of luck

Really sad this ride has now closed, so pleased I got to experience it one last time a couple of months back though 🙂 I hope all the zombies find new homes.

I'm going to Scarefest the 29th and the 30th of October and I'm so excited, I've never been before and absolutely adore Halloween 🎃

I never knew there was that queue path to the side 😅 I've always just walked straight in 😂

Well one thing is for certain the new sound track will be absolutely amazing because at are using ima score for all there rides now ❤️ can't wait to see this going back to the old day's with nowadays tech 😁

I watched a video the other day and I realised there are loads of elements like the walls moving around at the start that I never even noticed last time I went on it because I was so busy just looking for lights and giving my trigger finger RSI , it was a bit of a state and definitely needs a refresh of some sort , look forward to what’s coming next!

Well explained about the changes over the years and how the haunted house should be. My partner and I agree we will not miss the gun sounds! Lol let's hope the refurb will put Alton towers even more on the map as one of the best leaders in ghost rides again.

I was born after it became duel, so this state is the actually nostalgic for me, and many others

Oh no. I actually really liked duel. It was pretty fun, although it did break down often. Sad to see it go

I was one of the 3rd group to ride the HH in 1992 on opening day , id love to see more of it back along with some of the original vestibule score, repair the Trommel and give the old girl a new lease of life ❤️

Jackson spotted himself at 20:55 - very happy 🤣 his request is more creatures to add to the spider section, a basilisk 🐍 and cerberus the three headed dog 🐕 to guard the house.

I will always remember duel from my first ride where it broke down at the massive spiders bum me and my sister always have a laugh about it I was tearing up when I first seen the sign My first ever visit to Alton Towers in early 2015 revolved around finding Duel (I didn’t) only got the ride it twice Rest in Peace Duel

This is really exciting. To bring land back into use that was once used for rides is a major thing. I hope it’s better than Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was.

Scarefest won't be the same without Duel, however I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the ride

i feel sorry for that queue line ranger who had to deal with those last few rushing in lol.

It will be missed was a firm favourite for me and my family but it did need a refurbishment excited to see what the future holds for it

They should of allowed you to record the last ride before its all redone.

For someone who has been to Alton towers as a local a lot of times I never knew this ride existed 😂I always just thought the tomb was to add to the haunted hollow as a pass through gutted I didn’t get to ride it in my 23 years of living on this earth and I go every year 😭glad I can enjoy it through your eyes
