The blind options aside, used 14 foot aluminum canoe will be much lighter than both and much faster. A sportspal or Radisson canoe will be 1/2 the weight, more room, as stable or more stable than both. And can be found for a fraction of the cost used.
Exactly the video I needed! Been waiting for the H12 to come in stock at the local Bass Pro.... Kayaks are being hoarded by the TP people.

Just the video I was looking for. Good job!
Enjoyed the comparison! Your videos definitely make me want to consider adding that HTR layout lounge to my H12 setup

chrisfreakinsmith you won’t regret it
You went really in depth, great job! If I had to pick one for all around hunting. I’d go with the H12 every time. It’s more stable and safe, it can hold so much more gear.
Thanks for the info Elliott. Solo paddling ,fishing, maybe hunting my 119 works great. Taking my 88# chocolate lab fishing/hunting, i use my NuCanoe Frontier 12. That beast is 77# without the seat and 41 " wide. My dog loves fishing and in that flat deck, he can move about, lean over the side and the boat hardly rocks. I can kayak paddle it, stand up paddle it as well as fish standing plus i can use my Minn Kota on the transom for bigger waters. Can have 2 seats in also. Cons of that boat- slower speed when paddling, harder to load on top of my SUV racks and portage on dry land i need to use a big wheel kayak cart that i modify to fit.

Don, if you could only afford one: which would you choose? it would take longer to save up for the frontier , but I've wanted one for a while.
This video is so thorough, I appreciate it. I'm always worried about tipping. I'm a larger guy. I have a Coleman scanoe, I want to dress it out and hunt out of it but cant find blinds to fit. It's too large.
just the video i was looking for. thank you!

You’re welcome
I'm split between these 2. Not for hunting but for a multi day river camping and fishing trip. The only thing that holds me back is whether they will hold up in class II-III rapids?
I’m a big fan of the H12! Love mine. It’s my main fishing craft these days. Great comparison by the way!
Appreciate your content! About how far do you paddle to your hunting location?
I've taken 3 dozen in my old town vapor 12 I use the mesh bags. I'm looking to move up to the ascend 12x as I want a sit on top.
Jeez, I've never done duck hunting... but for turkey I just use one decoy. Holy cow, why so many decoys? (I guess if I had any sense I could do some research on duck hunting and figure that out....)
i just picked up an Old Town Guide Solo 119 . i don't think they make it any more . same dimensions as the discovery , different cross bars and seat . i got it for $300 . great shape . i can't wait till i get to put it in the river .
I love my H10 it only weighs 55 pounds and that's why I got it instead of the H12
just bought the old town solo. usually don't use a lot of decoys and you can pull a camo cover over you. 52lbs vs 72 is a big difference. less is more if you want to get where you need to go to kill ducks. if someone else can get there easily your gonna have a bad morning. i don't hunt with a dog so i am happy. enjoyed your video the ascend is less money so there is that as well.

I agree with everything you said. I have The best of both worlds the 119 when I need to be really light and the H 12 when I want to pack a little more gear.
What a great dog
The weight capacity is about 100 pounds difference. The old town is 354 the Ascend is 450 but 20 pounds more. I'd say old town if you go with multiple people to divide your gear up. Ascend for solo. Great review
Can’t find the redhead blind any where
Great comparison video Elliot! I would definitely say the 119 is not a boat for a dog unless you packed very light. The 25 lbs between my old kayak and the 119 made all the difference for me this season in terms of being able to get where I wanted to in my hunting areas. I also used to have to load my kayak on my roof racks and weight proved to be a night and day difference with that too
Awesome review! Why don’t you use a kayak cart for portages?
@FreelanceDuckHunting
4 жыл бұрын
If the portage is long and over a smooth surface we use deer carts to portage. But alot of our portages are through the woods where carts wont work well.
Which width HTR pad do you have? 18” or 24” Thank you for the reviews!

the 18
I need to go about 1 1/2 miles to where the ducks are. What would you recommend? Its a shallow open-water bay system. Max depth is about 4'.
@FreelanceDuckHunting
4 жыл бұрын
Id probably go with the old town and a jet sled behind it. Its just so fast in the water.
FYI: The H12s are a grand now and they dont make the blind for it any more !
Do you have a lightning setup to help you see in the morning as you’re getting to your hole?
@FreelanceDuckHunting
4 жыл бұрын
No, I just use an extremely powerful headlight.
How do the decoys fit into the H12 with the blind on it? Are there slits cut out to access the front and back storage areas?
@FreelanceDuckHunting
Жыл бұрын
Fits great, the blind rolls up and clips, front/back/sides
Great video! I think Outdoor Limits uses a redhead blind on a Discovery. That thing is light! I purchased a Beavertail Phantom that is only 9' long and it's pretty easy to handle but I don't think it's as light as the Discovery. Idk if they are hard to find as the H12, but right now the Ascends are impossible to find.

He must have taken the seat out. I’ll have to talk to him about he opinion on it
How big was Georgie in this? I currently use a 12' sit-in kayak and my 100 lb lab sits in between my legs but I want him out of my way. Do you think a large dog will fit in the front/back of the H12 alright? I appreciate the video - these were the two I've been looking in to.

She was 50 lbs. But I have a friend who has a 100 pound lab and he has used the h12 just fine with his dog.

@@FreelanceDuckHunting Thanks for the response!
Have you thought about just looking into a one-man 14-ft canoe? There are some good ones out there but much more expensive. They can hold a lot more weight and gear and still be handled by one person.
@FreelanceDuckHunting

We started with a canoe like that. But they are just too hard to hide well enough to finish mallards consitently.

I have an Old Town Saranac 146 and let me tell you, concealment can get very tough. I'm definitely looking at the Ascend H10.
Great Review!!
How much weight can the old town versus the ascent Carry. I myself weigh about 200 pounds. And I want to be able to take a gun a climber stand and some day gear out with me. Which would be better for that kind of a hunter. Basically I’m Hunting deer and turkey
@FreelanceDuckHunting

H12 would be better for you
I have used 15 & 17' canoes and the longer the canoe the easier they paddle and better time you make. These were both aluminum. I do now have a 15' Old town which is very stable (to me) and weighs around the 80# mark. I did make a motor bracket to use either a 3hp outboard (40#) or my electric motor w battery. The 3hp option is MUCH lighter and a gallon of gas will take you for miles at 6mph. But I now have bad shoulders and cannot paddle very far.
Can you put oar locks on the old town and use it as a rowboat?
@FreelanceDuckHunting
Жыл бұрын
I don’t have any experience with row locks or if they could be used.
Josh Garrels is a great musician
@FreelanceDuckHunting

Yes he is
Are you in Michigan?
Drag a jet sled behind the old town and the decoy space is resolved.
@FreelanceDuckHunting
4 жыл бұрын
yes, but dragging a jet sled behind the h12 you can still bring a dozen more decoys.
I think I'll go with the H12 when I finally find a used one. I think the extra ~20lbs is worth the extra ~100lbs capacity
People suck stop sucking people how hard is it to pick up your own trash or even better yet make it a habit of bringing an extra trash bag and go in the extra yard. I applaud you sir for bring that subject up because it burns my foot every time I go to the lake ....... thanks 🙏
Awesome. Vid!
Suggestion: Get the Ascend H10 (Yeah, 24" less LF of hauling), but only 55Lbs WITH THE SEAT! Still more hauling capacity than the Old Towne with its diminished sides. As for your blinds, the dog will configure himself to what you have available. Fake ducks, yup they will fit some in the rear compartment, some in front. But for god sakes, you're on the water! Its not like you're towing them five miles!. Anyhoo... any way I figure it (huntin' or just pleasure kayaking down a river with some class 3 rapids), the Ascend H10 (not H12) wins in a shoot out with these two.
@FreelanceDuckHunting

The H10 is a nice boat but or me there isn't enough carry capacity for all the items I bring with me.
Do you use the blind pad with the HTR lounge ?
@FreelanceDuckHunting
4 жыл бұрын
Kind of. The pad is still there but not fully attached tightly
I bring a dry bag fishing for rubbish alone
Awesome video i have the h 10
