Ducati ST4 In Tank Fuel Line Fix

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Here's a step by step procedure to change the in tank fuel lines on a Ducati ST4. I've also added a safety wire to insure the line does not come off.

Nice vid. You re-attached the fuel filter correctly but your sharpie arrow is pointing in the opposite direction of which the fuel actually flows. Unless you meant “flows” into and your indicating with the arrow the end of the filter which receives fuel. The OEM Mahle filter has an arrow indicating flow (the opposite of your arrow), just in case there’s any confusion out there. Your vid saved me from shipping back my after market filter as your hose hack for bulking up the diameter, looks like a sound way to keep it from bouncing around inside the plastic harness. As good a hack as the safety wire move if you ask me. Thanks!

My 2006 ST3 just died on me on the highway at 60 miles an hour with out a beet of pre warning. I was convinced it was an electrical problem as it died so suddenly and refused to even fart while turning over. i have had the bike since 2007 and always ran prfect with over 60,000 miles on it. I have alwayd done my own mainteance and thought it was time to visit a Ducati shop and have them take a look After watching your video i checked my fuel line in the tank and discovered it had slipped off. Reconnected it and now rums pefect again. the next time I replace the fuel filter I will saftey wire it as well. Thanks a lot you made my Week!

This video is exceptionally good and exceptionally helpful. Just got an ST4 was a new fuel pump, but it's not installed yet.... So this will really help me know which hoses to check if they are not new, and also which hoses connect where. I had to get the three flange nuts, two from one dealer and one from another. With shipping cost me about $60 total! Obviously the shipping was more than the flange nuts. Anyway, I want to thank you for taking the time and effort to make and publish this video. And yes the hack is nice! Thanks again, David

Interesting point about the high pressure line inside the tank. Vibration + pressure = possibility of popping the line off the smooth, unbulged, nipple. I'm putting a new fuel pump + fuel filter on my 2006 S2R 1000, and really like this video. Thanks.

I know that 'immediate' sensation when this happens the second time--it happened on my 848. I upgraded my clamps and all is good now inside my tank. Regarding the safety wire, I used this tactic on my shift mechanism inside the alternator-side crankcase cover, which kept mis-aligning and locking up. I safety-wired the two bolts together that hold the mechanism in place and that fixed the problem...

Back before Bob was born, Nortons had a petcock with one fuel line to the carbs, screw adjustable tappets, points, and centrifugal advance timing. To go anywhere, a man kicked the start lever. Now a days, gravity isn't reliable so we need electric fuel pumps. And $500 igniter boxes to spark. Complexifcation is our problem in a nutshell. I guess you’re young and flexible enough to adjust. Carry on.

why was there a sharp tool used to prise out the base plate .. this can cause sharp marks on the alloy base plate ..importand as there is the groove for the sealing ring that needs to be taken care on. instead to use a sharp screw driver - use the screws that hold the base blate in place (or even additional longer ones..) - undo the factory screws on the base plate and reposition them into the three threaded holes there in the fuelpump baseplate - turn the screws in equally, it will lift out the baseplate from its seat ..

I had trouble with the fuel sender unit in my Holden Commodore when I used submersible fuel hose in it,firstly, the top barb was too sharp, there was too much of a kink on that end which eventually caused it to split & because it's spring loaded inside the tank, it compresses down by about an inch,so I think the bend radius of hose got exceeded & the outer sheath of the hose also split on it,no one has ever told me about bend radii for submersible fuel hose , here's the fuel sender unit I'm talking about :- scontent.fsyd7-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/14568126_548160398706964_8680582590599003270_n.jpg?_nc_cat=101&_nc_ht=scontent.fsyd7-1.fna&oh=a592776acb1c963feb394cbfc0e8deb5&oe=5D175093 I did file the barb down with a file & shorten the fuel hose by 20mm, I've heard of it being done before in a BA model Ford Falcon XR6 turbo car, they did a fuel pump upgrade with submersible rubber hose & said that it must be straight when submersed in fuel, note I'm talking about Australian cars here because that's where I live. I did fit another fuel sender unit as I was unsure on my way home when I was working, it was a hot 42°C day in January,it was actually the inlet snorkel on the Chevy LS1 which heated up & came loose, the car was bucking, stalling & carrying on,it did it the next day with the new fuel sender unit & all I could do was tighten the pipe clamps up,the engine bay got that hot that the plastic softened & moved on the MAF meter & throttle body, causing an air leak. What I'm saying, is it's made me a bit afraid to use that submersible rubber hose again,it is supposed to be resistant to pure methanol & E85 fuel, I've been using it in E10 fuel, the fuel pump in mine isn't OEM rather a Bosch copy which is used in a lot of the Korean cars & the Jeep,it is very similar looking to the Ducati pump. I was thinking of putting it back in & using this PTFE fuel line if I'm still afraid :- www.efihardware.com/images/4855/Submersible-Flex-Fuel-Hose-E85-Compatible-150mm-Long.jpg The fuel pump & regulator is still o.k. I've bought an adonized AN6 barbed fitting & I'm planning on buying a couple of elbows & a quick connect male fitting so it can plug into the OEM fuel connector, I've seen people drill a hole into the top plate of the sender unit & fit the AN6 fittings where running the rubber fuel line on the original barb can be a problem on the pump outlet fitting,so I want to do that ! I may give the rubber hose another chance,as long as it's straight !

Excuse my ignorance, but how are the electrical components not exposed to fuel, given they are bare within the tank? I mean I get it if it has it's own sealed compartment within the tank, and its just a location thing, but the little tea bag type filter looks exposed so thats what im not getting, does fuel pass through that?

Glad to answer. They are all exposed to fuel. This is a common way to have an in tank fuel pump. Almost all cars on the road have pumps in the tank. They are brushless motors, no sparks.

With all respect I am always skeptical when people modify original designs to "improve" them. I guess Ducati designers are not idiots and the bike has been tested and re-tested. I have a ST4 since 20 years and done maintenance always by myself: never had the problem of the pump line getting loose. I would suspect an improper assembly at the start. A proper assembly would be the right "fix" in my humble view. If the naughty line was as loose as to leave the joint, it would not be tight, so the wire would keep it in place, but would not help tightness. One more comment: drilling the assembly when already complete? Argh! I would have removed all bits to be safe and clean. Having said this, to remove the assembly from the tank, instead of prying it with a flat screwdrivers, there are three threaded holes that can be used with bolts as extractors.

because when you push fluid thru an open hole, you have same flow- then when you try and jam it thru lets say 3 sq inches of fine gauge mesh vs 1.5 inches of filter material, thats where the flow probs arise! that cheap steel NAPA filter was designed for carburated lawn tractors, do you really think it strains the particles down to the same degree of clean as the correct filter? I mean a person only changes the fuel filter in the tank every year or two, is saving 15 or 20 bucks in that time frame worth possibly clogging injectors?

Eclidean A 5/16” ID fuel line has an cross sectional area of about 0.3066 sq/inches. Doesn’t matter the size of the canister; restrictions are caused by the narrowest cross-section in the line.

My bike runs just fine with the 3032 and as I said in the video, the previous owner installed it. I just wanted to get the job done so I left it in there. LOL after you remove the 3 nuts, you then screw 3 - 6mm bolts into the threaded holes next to where the nuts came off and slowly carefully tighten each one a little at a time to coax the fuel plate off the bottom - altho yours was recently off, lubed and loose most of the time they are stuck and if any "Bubba the Shade-Tree Mechanic" tries to pry it loose with a flat blade you will break the cast aluminum bottom plate and then youre screwed! Final thought: on YOUR bike the silicone lube is super helpful, but on any car or bike with an O2 sensor (yours doesnt have one) never use silicone based anything on any part of the fuel or intake as it will fuck up the O2 sensor - (this includes using silicone based gasket sealer on the intake manifolds) for those vehicles, use regular wheel bearing grease-

Just because you CAN doesnt mean you should? This is a Ducati, not a Briggs & Stratton - as a lifelong collector, restorer and admirer of all things Ducati, somethings you just dont cut corners on, and the micron-mesh screening in the factory filter is much finer than that tractor-style crap from the autoparts store- Your bike - do what you want, injectors are $200-400 each, depending on your model - and I just bought a ST-2 with the same Napa POS filter, from a guy cheap cause it wouldnt run and the injectors were so clogged they had to be replaced..........
