Ducati 659 696 796 Engine - Valve clearance, Timing belts Cam timing - part 2

Timing belt and cam assorted points. The best description I can come up with for this one. A few points to be noted about these engines that might be helpful in general service and timing belt replacement.

On those bearings for the belts- the idler ones (that dont move with the tensioner) that are double stacked two bearings with a circlip- I checked and you can get them at your local autoparts store, theyre the same as some Ford cars use for a pilot bushing in the end of the crank, they go for like $6 ea

the replaceable bearings ones are from older models. the ones on this engine are a 1 piece bearing with the mounting screw as part of it. have been that way for some time, i don't recall when they first appeared now.

@@bradthebikeboy I know I changed them on my buddies Multistrada 1000DS (the first gen Ugly one with the fairing that half turned with the bars) and it had the 2 pc Bearing idlers.......

Great videos, thanks. Question, I’m about to rebuild my 900 Elefant. It’s an early motor with exterior oil lines to the barrels. I have a pair of new later barrels without the oil connections.anyone know what’s necessary to use them on the early cases?

What is the valve cleaners space of monster 696 2011?

Belts on my 696 tend to walk off the cam pulleys by about 1 mm. Could this be due to the bearings like you mentioned or the belt tension? Bike only has about 4200 miles.

if they stay in that position i'd not be overly concerned about it - i think i see it a bit. if they walk off into the belts covers there's an issue. if the bearings and tension are good neither should be causing an issue.

what about vertical timing. is it same right? how to find the firing vertical ? after find that set three teeth before TDC of cam right?

the vertical firing is the tdc where the timing shaft dot is at 3 o'clock / pointing at the horizontal cam. with the crank at that point, you could then use the same method to set the vertical cam. again, that's just a guess based on about where it should end up. the slot in the end of the vertical cam should line up with the hole in the cam cover once you've moved the crank back to horizontal tdc firing, where all timing marks line up.

if the marks are aligned then yes, it should all be correct. just turn it over slowly first.

@@TheMasterizzatore if the timing gears are fitted correctly, the mark on the timing shaft lines up only once per cycle (720 degrees), so if you understand what you're doing and it's put together right, it's right.
