Dublin's Victorian Fruit & Vegetable Market, Ireland 1962

Ойын-сауық

Farmers queue at the Victorian Dublin Fruit and Vegetable Market in the hope of getting a good price for their produce.
The Fruit and Vegetable Market in Dublin’s North City centre was established in 1892.
The market has remained virtually as it was when it was first designed.
There are some inefficiencies with the market in relation to the lack of grading of goods which results in poor confidence from both buyers and sellers. A further setback is the length of time it takes for the farmer or supplier to get their products to the market.
Donabate farmer Joe McDermot arrives by tractor to sell his produce at the market.
The present system of trade for fruit and vegetables in Dublin will make it very difficult to compete in the Common Market.
This episode of ‘On the Land’ was broadcast on 12 November 1962. The reporter is Pat Jennings.

That was not Joe McDermott arriving very early in the morning in his Massey Ferguson tractor and trailer loaded with very fine fresh vegetables potatoes and cabbages, that was Spencer Tracy, the famous actor from the Old Man Of The Sea and other great films, look how fit Spencer was, to save vital seconds he flung his leg over the steering wheel.

It wasn't a Massey Ferguson either, it was a Fordson Major. A Massey Ferguson 35 appears at 4:35 where the huge effort the driver has to make to turn the steering wheel when stationery on firm ground is visible. Those tractors were pigs to operate compared with what we have today.

@@dellhell8842 😂 yes, I remember driving a Massey Ferguson with a front loader on it …… definitely builds up your muscles trying to maneuver in tight spaces.
