Duane Allman Berry Oakley CRASH SITE WRECK Allman Brothers

Музыка

Short video of the places where Duane and Berry had their crashes. The crash sites are a block over and a block up form one another, the ride including the stop sign takes me 33 seconds on this video. Both died from their injuries, Duane Oct. 29, 1971 and Berry Nov. 11, 1972.

@@tonycole6473 I dunno about the wisdom of that. Macon seems like a hell of an unsafe place to drive around, and I'm not so certain that distracted driver tourists rubberneckin' the scenes would make it any safer. They should, it seems to me, make a park for family get togethers and barbeques to show respect. A nice granite monument would make it a place for both remembrance and for a tribute to the happiness they brought into this world through their music. Duane's friends say that music meant everything to him. Heck they could hold concerts in that park. But I'm pretty clueless about how Georgians think.

Berry's crash site was a block from my Grandmother's house. That's a sharp curve there at Inverness Ave. I remember playing in her yard when I was a kid in the late 60s and early 70s and hearing a car crash more than once.

Wow! Just came across this! Well done dude! I got a serious case of the chills while watching as I was in a serious wreck on my Harley 7 years ago in almost the same way as Duane as I had this little old turn in front of me on pretty much the same type of street. I was very lucky, but it took me a few surgeries to be back with us and hear to respond to this. RIP Duane and Berry!

I had always envisioned it as a dirt road out on the country side with no stop signs, and a peach truck pulling out from nowhere in front of Duane. This is nothing like I imagined. Anyway, one of the sadest days in music history. Duane and Buddy Holly were so young.

The events as described really made me angry about the negligence of the truck driver, so I looked up what happened to the guy. Well, according to The History Channel - for whatever they're worth - it didn't happen quite like the narrator indicates. According to the History Channel's account, it was bad luck all the way around. Here's a portion of their article: "On the afternoon of his accident, Duane Allman was speeding along Hillcrest Avenue on his Harley-Davidson Sportster when he slowed to let a flatbed truck carrying a huge crane boom make a left-hand turn in front of him. Allman pulled his bike toward the center of the road so he could swing around the outside of the truck, but in the middle of its turn the flatbed suddenly rumbled to a stop. Unable to maneuver around or under the giant obstacle, Allman ran right into it. The crane’s weight ball knocked him off his Harley, which bounced up in the air and off of Allman’s chest before skidding to a stop along the curb." The details of the article seem too specific for me, but they stand by their account, and I suppose, so did the Macon police department that investigated the tragedy. The saddest day for rock and roll music was motorcycle crashes and the loss of Duane and Berry in 1971 and 1972. I was fortunate to have seen ABB with both of them at the Grand Opera House, Macon Central City Park and the Second Atlanta Pop Festival in Byron, Ga. July 1970. Its hard not to think what they would have done with more time; the greatest rock guitar player ever hadn't made a dent into what was to come in his 24 years on the planet. The two biggest events in my formative years was Woodstock and the Second Atlanta Pop Festival; both of which inverted the molecular structure of my universe. I discovered the wonders of my youth with the people there and people like them I have known since. Forty four years later.....the road goes on forever. Indeed it does..........

Yes, I lived in Macon on and off from late '69 - early '72 and moved back to stay in 1977 until a family tragedy caused me to leave my beloved home. Macon is so very rich in music history and there are many places to honor that fact. Just recently an awesome mural was completed to honor Duane, Gregg and Phil. It can be seen on the Big House website.

Brother Skydog was truly one of a kind. The only other guitar player of his era who was even remotely in his league was Hendrix. Incredible how "ordinary" these two heavily sacred/sad places look, cars just driving by, people going about their business all these years later. But for me, who has been deeply affected by the two motorcycle accidents ever since they happened, it is very moving, very chilling to see where it happened. Duane speeding way too fast on his bike coming down that hill; a year later a still-distraught Berry veering across that centerline....man, it still really gets to me. Duane didnt see the crane sticking out the back of the truck (which was well into his path on the left) until it was too late. There was nothing he could do going at that speed with possibly bad brakes. He hit some part of that crane and was thrown from the bike. I have seen pictures online of the Sportster after the wreck and it seemed intact - not like it hit a curb or a hydrant or anything - so I surmize that Duane hit the crane with his body and got thrown or lost control. RIP Duane

@@JCStorm76 Sad, but true. Hillcrest Avenue boasted beautiful homes many built in the 1920s. My grandparents didn't lock their doors. They could go outside and work in the yard. They moved out in the mid seventies, since it was no longer safe there. My aunt moved from Vineville Avenue. My Dad owned a realty company, so he rented out her house. The Big House. Candy and Linda Oakley use to come to his office to pay Berry's rent. Berry autographed My Eat a Peach album. I was able to get some guitar picks and strings, and drum cases when they moved. Whenever my Dad and I would go to check rental property, you could smell incense in the house. Funny story, my aunt, Mrs Higgens had left a large dining room table in the attic. Berry pulled it down and set it in the dining room. My uncle Bob had once set up a train set in the parlor. As a child, I was always scared in that old house.

The truck was a long flatbed with a crane on the back most likely belonging to that lumber company at the site. As usual Duane was riding fast, the truck was into the turn, the driver spotted Duane and then froze not knowing if Duane was going to cut in front of him - thats why he stopped mid-turn. Duane made the split second decision to go around him on the left. Problem is as everyone knows the back of a long truck swings out alot in a turn. continue...

Off to itself, quiet, peaceful, shared by trees.A lol of natural vegetation. So happy they were buried side by side. We were able to walk right up to the marble graves and pay our respects. Great video, man. Educational, and very well done. What a shame that Duane and Berry died so young. As great a band as the Allman Brothers were, how great would they have been had those two been able to live out their lives? Thank you very much for this fine video.

Thanks a lot for this birds eye view. I never got such a good view and and had no idea how really close the two accident sites were to each other. Well done.

I would suspect that area to have been significantly more countryish in 1971.

Very interesting - we hear about these accidents at the time but don't realize they actually happen at quite ordinary places and just random bits of bad luck. I remember reading about Duane's and Berry's accidents and imagined they happened on the open road on some lonely highway with the trees and mountains in the distance - but in reality on quiet non-descript suburban roads. There ought'r be some plaques commemorating these spots and great guys who met their maker there?? Kinda spooky the accidents happened so close together. Thanks for the tour - the music lives on!!

Great video. I always wondered what that intersection looked like relative to speed, trees, incline, visibility, road quality, etc. Always wondered what sort of intersection Duane was up against. Nice overview of Macon as well. I'm not gonna say RIP Duane & Berry cuz I'm pretty damn sure they're jammin' loud and hard up there and havin' a few beers.

Thank you for the visual. I remember well when the first album was released. I recon the Allman Brothers Band to be one of the best. Just really got into their southern blues. Clapton said something like Duane being a better player than he. I had not realized until today that Berry Oakley had died, and under such similar circumstances. I stopped buying their albums after Duane died. Well I did, Eat A Peach, and finally, Brothers And Sisters. I have one thing thought about motorcycles, for some of my own friends were killed on them...enough said...Acecoseis

Thanks man, I know it's hard but people need to know. I came to Macon in 91, it was my first trip there, I met a man at Rose Hill who said he owned the Bike that was Duane's, Charlie Daniel's came by that day also. Duane and Barry were very inspirational to many many musicians/people. Ride on Bro.

Thanks for posting the video. Really interesting to see where it happened after reading about it. I'm a huge ABB fan and when I was a kid, I was hit by a car in 1971 right about the time Duane had his accident. One day I'd like to see visit Macon and see these places and see Rose Hill Cemetery too to pay respects to both Duane and Berry.
