Dual Battery Setup, Long Term Use Review And Update
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Almost four years of continuous use! We review what we like, don't like, what we'd do different, and mistakes we made.
We show you what we consider the best dual battery system for powering an automotive fridge and accessories. And, we show you in detail how to install it! We also show you how we made and wired our outlet/gauge panel.
While researching second battery systems we learned about Redarc dc-dc chargers. It didn’t take long for us to decide a dc to dc charger was the direction we needed to go in. They make for a super efficient power source.

Your original redarc dual battery install helped me figure out my dual battery setup. I went with a redarc BCDC1225D like you guys and an Odyssey 34R in the same spot. Couldn’t be happier

Awesome!
Because of y'all I bought the Redarc 50 amp and i use it with 100AH battery with a 3500 Watt pure sin inverter. I have a solar panel I need to install on the roof rack. I use it to power the laptop, drone stuff and will be adding other stuff like winch, frig etc. All of my stuff is installed inside the passenger compartment.
Thank you for doing this follow up! I Just installed this system last week using your original video as a guide. I was actually able to squeeze in a 100ah Odessey 31 series by HEAVILY modifying the C4 tray and adding extra supports (Why, because I wanted more)😉. It also enabled me to install a much larger ABS hold down platform. Besides that I went with the Redarc 40amp and made a Busbar to connect all those wires to the load/charger side of the Victron shunt. The heat shield is another great idea! Thanks for all you guys do!👍
I finally installed a dual-battery and used your original install video as my guide. It works perfectly, even though I was rushed when doing it. I still haven't installed everything, but my fridge/freezer works perfectly and that's all that I really care about. Thanks!
Great followup. Looking forward to the updated wiring this winter!

You and me both!
This past winter I pretty much copied your under hood install and have had great experience with it to date. Looking forward to seeing your new video with the storage box when you get to it!
THANKS... Updates and upgrades are always useful.

You are so welcome!
Really enjoy your videos...informative and entertaining. I have a '95 4WD Suburban that I'm outfitting for photo excursions. I also went with an Odyssey yellow top since my engine bay was pretty space-limited...the Odyssey battery was the only AGM dual purpose I could find with a height under 8". I was worried about the 72 amp hour capacity (wanted 100 but couldn't find one to fit) but looking at the numbers the 72 is probably more than enough for my needs.
Went with the Victron Bluetooth shunt a few weeks ago. Fantastic upgrade and SO easy to wire into a existing system. Wish I had done it sooner.

Great to hear!
Good info, we also have a yellow top battery in our FJ there is a open space passenger side. Where your battery is we installed a second fuse bock and a C-Tec DC to DC converter. We only have a friig and camp lights ,charging ports . Look forward to future upgrades to your system.
The update videos are a great idea.
😎✅ … very informative, thanks❗️👍
Nice vid!

I have a x2 battery with a 100 watt solar panel on my 4Runner trail with two blue sea 12v and 2 usb that have constant power and that will run my fridge indefinitely. For anything else I have my 2 Jackerys. I wanted my power portable.
I love your guys videos. I have used several of your recommendations, including the suggestions for the dual battery install. I have a question that I hope you will answer...What did you use for a connection to plug your solar blanket/panels into the yellow wire for the Redacr? It seems like you have a little connector of some sort right in the plastic part under the passenger side of the windshield, right above the battery.

Thanks for watching! Yes, we installed an SAE plug in the plastic cowl trim.
I got a question, Do you guys have a Great bumper install video? Sorry for not being on subject.lol
How is this second battery difference compared to portable power battery pack such as the Jackery. Thanks
I have trouble with my 2017. I'm not sure what to do next :3
Is the storage ready? what is the raw material? and internal dimensions?
Hi there - this is great information and I've used your original video for a build of my own which was incredibly helpful! Which Victron Model did you replace the old unit with? Is the monitoring unit still wired in the rear cargo space or did you end up moving that to a new location? Appreciate these videos more than you know!

The one we use now is totally Bluetooth and is mounted right at the battery under the hood

@@WanderlostOverland Sounds much more elegant - looks like the Smartshunt. Thanks again!
This video is indeed great piece of information about how NOT to set up a dual battery system in your rig. Thank you for your input.

Glad it was helpful!
Have you added a high output alternator or the Arclight led fuse in order to actually fully charge your AGMs? I run a single Oddyssey Group 34 with an SPOD and am now learning that the stock Toyota alternator will never fully charge an AGM.
@WanderlostOverland
Жыл бұрын
It is correct that the stock alternator will never put out the correct voltage to properly charge an AGM, or lithium battery. That's precisely why we charge ours with the Redarc charger. It does reach that higher voltage.
I have a question. So which DC to DC charger are using the CTEK or REDARC?
@WanderlostOverland

The Redarc on the 4R, the Cetek on the FJ. Both work the same way with the same results.

Absolutely! Only one at a time and not for very long. :)
Thanks for great job you're doing!!! Only complaint I have, you never answered my question regarding setup which I've sent you on instagram :(

Yeah, don't bother asking. They most likely don't know.
