I feel like the first company to come out with decent copy stand for mirrorless cameras at $100 is gonna kill the market. Copy stands are outrageously expensive for what they are.

I also use my M300 enlarger as a copy stand since I noticed that the instruction manual actually mentions this function! It is indeed a very sturdy solution to scan up to 6x9 with my setup and if you need to go bigger you can always use the NEAR extension column.

Didn’t know about DSLR scanning! This contraption caught my eye though :) My favourite method for something like this is a 3” center jaw Matthelini clamp, a 40” c-stand arm with two grip heads and a baby pin screwed into a ball head. Grip is so versatile!

Did something similar with a Meopta Axomat enlarger. Attaching the ball head to the enlarger head mount is a bit more tricky but works great. I also use the lens of the enlarger (50mm Wilon) plus some adaptors and macro rings on a Canon dslr to digitalize the negs. The film carrier of the enlarger works great as the film holder. I think is the cheaper way to have a complete setup to digitalize.

I got super lucky and found an old pentax copy stand for dirt cheap. It's sturdy af and even has a macro rail.

this video is a gift to the community. I'm about to sell my Epson V600 and was wondering if I should or not buy one of the solutions some companies make, but I knew it is something we sort of build ourselves. thanks for it

Thanks for these! Any chance you can make a full length video of DSLR Scanning? There are some out there but I appreciate your videos because you go in depth and share everything you may run into. I just got a rig but running into issues that aren’t talked about in videos.

I picked up a durst colour copy 350 for cheap. Stand and light source in one. Plus I use my enlarger lenses. Works a treat.

If you've got a drum scanner, it might make an interesting set of videos to also show how one of those is operated, to de-mistify the process of what it involves. Then again, if someone has a drum scanner, they probably know how to use it.. DSLR scanning seems like the future, unless you can get a good cheap flatbed or only shoot 35mm and want a plustek or similar old scanner of that type

A trip to the hardware store for a 24" length of 3/4" pipe, matching pipe flange and pipe clamps, a few nuts and bolts, and a piece of plywood makes a perfect copy stand for about 20 bucks.

I don’t know what hardware store you have in your area, but my local Lowes and Home Depot have the smallest piece of plywood for $32. A 3/4 inch pipe and correct flange (and screws to attach it to the plywood) get me up to $60, and I have only got the base and column at this point.

For BW film, I think camera scanning is a great fast way to scan film, but for color film, it might be faster to scan that way, but then you are going to spend waaaay more time getting the colors right, even with negative lab pro....a lot of people don't know that film scanners scan color negatives with a longer exposure time of the blue and green channels. This acts as an analog glass filter at the lens, and the longer exposure boosts the blue and green components and reduces the orange making it easier to get proper colors.

I have a Novoflex clamp-onto-table type copy stand that I recently got to make it easier to take close-up photographs of small table-top items, and its quite sturdy. Of course its also more expensive than most of these options. I still need to get a better head for it, though, as right now I'm just using what I had laying around the house. The only problem with this approach is that you need a solid and sturdy table edge to clamp it on, which isn't always available. A while back I got one of Negative Supply's older extruded-aluminum based "Pro Riser" copy stands, and its terrible. Its way too flimsy to hold the camera steady unless you hold your breath and pray, and vertical movement is controlled by a screw that takes an eternity to move more than a tiny amount.

protip: by temporarily mounting a filter (any filter, just so it's flat) in front of the lens you can use your laser aligner for the enlarger to get the planes parallel.

Hello! I enjoy your videos. I'm using a Durst 600 stand that works very well. Have you used your setup for LF negative (4x5) digitizing? My Epson V700 is a,so acting strange these days, so I'm looking to switch that over to this setup. Unfortunately Veloi has nothing in that size 🙂 Be well.

Thanks for making this! My Epson V600 works mostly well for digitizing my 35mm & 120 film, but I do use my Canon 7D to digitize my 4x5 film and constantly setting up my tripod has been a chore so I’m definitely loving these alternative ideas. On a side note, time permitting of course, I’d love for you to do a mini review of that Pentax DSLR you’re using. 95% of my work is on film, but I am starting to get some jobs that require digital and have been thinking about switching away from Canon, but not sure of the options outside of Nikon and Sony. As I said I use a 7D so of course I’m definitely not concerned with using the latest & greatest kit, but I’m definitely curious about what you’re using. That body style looks great!

I use an Epson V600 as well for 35mm, 120, & 4x5. If you want to keep using your Epson for 4x5 scans (which trust me, the images come out very detailed) - take two scans of the photograph, both halves. Then if you have Photoshop (perhaps another photo editing software will have this feature), you can automatically Photo-merge the image and let Photoshop do the stitching for you. Never had a problem with Photo-merging 4x5 film on Photoshop. Just be ready for large file sizes, but large format should be large file sizes otherwise you’re wasting the potential of your photographs my friend.

Can you give more info on the bolt you used for your T slot setup? I tried using a 1/4 20 carriage bolt but found that the bolt head was too large for the series 10 slot.

Great video, I've been struggling with making my own stand for weeks with 2020 extrusion. Here's my question, how the heck did you attach the ball head to the rail? A carriage bold it going to be waaaay too large to fit in that channel. I can't seem to find anything 3/8 that's going to fit into that channel very well.

Hello from the UK. I recently watched this video and am in the process of trying to configure a stand for film scanning without taking out a 2nd mortgage. This solution with the Durst 301 seems really good. Is it stable enough and is the column tall enough for taking a 105 macro lens for medium format? would appreciate your comments - keep the great videos coming.

I'm looking for something similar to hold an Intrepid compact enlarger. They suggest a copy stand, but they do seem insanely expensive for a bit of pipe and a board.

I'm trying to identify the exact part number of what is referred to as "impact 5/8 stud adapter" which is used to connect the micro clamp to the ballhead in the do it yourself rig. For the life of me i can't find this part. It looks like a Impact Short Double-Male Round Spigot (SRP-109P), but without the center hole. Anyone know?

I ended up with exactly the same setup: bought the Valoi and a used Kaiser enlarger. The Valoi is great if you wanna scan a whole roll of film. The Kaiser enlager are modular so you can swap the arm to turn it into a copy stand. I used my tripod and a film holder with a LED light table before that and it sucks. It is okay to scan one frame. But scanning a whole roll of film is so annoying that you either invest in a different solution or you will stop scanning film altogether.

Why not just a monitor arm that clamps to desk? Plenty on amazon. Then you have the 4 holes to work with and attach to a ballhead.

Why not just buy a flatbed scanner to save yourself from all this extra work? Especially since one has to buy extra parts to make this work. Also, I appreciate all the info; but it’ll be very beneficial to show us the results from this method of scanning.

This is one part of a series. Results will be viewed as the system is completed. Flatbed vs DSLR scanning is a choice people have to make for themselves. I rarely digitize anything, but I’m here to show people their options.
