DS212: Open source 2-ch oscilloscope and signal generator

After seeing their 'side projects' TS100 soldering iron and ES120 screwdriver, I finally got a pocket scope from miniware aka minidso.com. Is it as good as my previous experiences with their products suggest? I'll put it through its paces and take it apart to find out. I'll also try to modify its open source firmware to add another waveform option to signal generator.

    I would love to see this company do a benchtop scope with the same design philosophy. I mainly work with audio stuff, and it'd probably be so much more useful than a lot of the cheaper bench scopes that end up on a lot of audio workbenches.

    Thanks for putting this out there. I'm buying a real desktop 4-ch oscilloscope but I was also wondering if there was a open source project yet. I will buy this for that reason to modify and build from it. And it would be great to take to work and find problems in the equipment at my print shop. So many times one of these would have saved me from hours of trying to find the problem.

  • @bloguetronica
    @bloguetronica6 жыл бұрын

    Not bad for the price! The function generator is not very well characterized in the specs, but I guess it works at 20MSa/s and has no reconstruction filter. The 10MHz maximum in square wave mode and the 20KHz maximum in sine wave mode are giveaways.

  • @alexm7056
    @alexm70566 жыл бұрын

    This is cheaper one and huge step back from 5 -year older DS203! DS203 is using slightly older generation of ARM CPU (Cortex M3) but it gets help from separate Latice FPGA to handle acquisition from external 40MHz ADC (schematic is here: www.minidso.com/forum.php?mod=attachment&aid=MjM0MHxhNmQzODAxZHwxNTI0ODU2MTYyfDB8NjY2). While, a shown, this DS212 has a single STM32F303 doing it all. Cortex M4 with FPU has a couple 5MHz ADC units built in. But continuously running ADC peripheral at this speed in STM32 is basically useless, DMA gets so loaded that you barely can do anything else. So what you do in this case - is loop sequence of three steps: , , . Which, if done effectively, provides robust UX. But internal ADC is crap anyway I consider DS212 a very good demonstration of STM32F303 capabilities. Well done! Kudos to the development team demonstrating great expertise in STM32 (like they do in all of their other products). To be noted - the same controller have been used in many quad-copter flight controller boards as well, new designs however already using STM32F7 (what is like 4x faster than F3)

    Ez Marco, thanks for your informative review. Would it be possible to tell me whether any of these mini scopes have 'Roll Mode' for the display, apart from the DSO112A model please? I need a cheap little scope to view CV modulation sources in my modular system and some of the cycle times will be over a minute or even longer - Is this what you need this feature for? It seems odd that the 112A has this feature and none of the other more expensive models appear to have it.
