DRZ400E vs. DRZ400S Which Should You Buy?

Hermit lists off the differences between the DR-Z400E and the DR-Z400S. Hermit is riding eveRid ADV's DRZ400E and CDS is riding a DRZ400S. They also talk about if it's better to buy a DRZ400E and make is street legal or get a DRZ400S already ready for street, but with a little more weight and less kick from the factory.

I own a 2007 DRZ400s, bought 17" rims with a huge EBC front rotor. Yosh full exhaust, 3by3, jetted and all guarded up, also. But a real nice addition I found was buying a 19" motocross rear rim, laced to an E or S front hub with smaller E or S front brake. It is 2.2 inchs wide and carries a 100 series tire well & they are a lot of very good 19" tires. I still change out wheels some, but a lot less often. My main setup is the 17" on the back& the 19" with smaller disk, lot less likely to get bent and the 19 lifts up over logs a lot better than the much heavier 17. Have to say I think it was a good move and very reasonable money wise.

I have a 2002 S with an E full exhaust and lots of mods to reduce weight. It is a perfect dual-sport. Keep in mind in some states like Oregon, you can only license a bike that was licensed by the manufacture. So, you cannot license an E unless you get lucky at DMV which does happen.

The s stands for "street" meanings it's choked up with emissions . The e is the "off road only " trail enduro bike. Has alot more power. If you put the fmf power bomb header on the e. You will have a monster of a bike. I had the Klx 400 e with power bomb. And it smoked my dads newer drz 400s night and day difference.

  • @andrewstambaugh8030

Thanks , guys. Nice video. One important point: where you are it is much easier to street a dirtbike. Here in WA, it varies a lot in whether they accept it or not and can be a lot more expensive. So, you might be able to take an E and get it street legal for a few hundred dollars, or the dmv might refuse it all together, or require you to pay a moto-shop with the DMV recognition/cert to do road conversions. Because they want to sell you all the stuff for the privilege (you are at their mercy), that ends up being more like $500-1500 or at least a $250 we inspect and stamp it fee, from what I've heard on forums. (good idea to call/research ahead of time before buying a bike) PS. on the 20lb weight difference, i would expect that to be very noticeable. Even taking my 340lb ninja 250 vs 380lb ninja 300 streetbikes offroad (open forest and non-extreme trail riding), that weight difference 20 or 40 lbs is very noticeable in how flickable they feel offroad. That said, the 300 may be 40lbs heavier, but on the street feels 2x as smooth, crisp and planted.

Some excellent points! I wish I know more when I bought my 2003 DRZ(S), but I was just eager to get out and ride, plus the price was incredible (I'd say 30% below market, and it came with new tires and spare parts). Also, titles are less strictly kept by the owner for the E model (because they don't have to register). That might also be something to consider. I see a lot of E models on CL that say "no title, but will provide a bill of sale." Almost all S or SM models say "clean title in hand." Only having a bill of sale can make getting a street title a big PITA. Great vid Hermit!

  • @HermitDaVlog

    @HermitDaVlog

    8 жыл бұрын

+John Behmer Yeah, the problem there is you're hearing three omni directional mic (one on each rider). So you're actually hearing three motorcycles in this video while I'm talking. When it's my by myself the mic picks up my voice over the motor, but when there's multiple mics the person talking gets the level of their motor dropped, but the people not talking don't. I make a pass when editing and drop the non-talking riders levels down if I find it hard to hear the speaker, but it's a lot of work. Maybe in the future when I'm riding with others I'll get a directional mic for me and see if it's much better.

+Connor Lewis I would say after 20K you can't be surprised if the motor soon needs a rebuild even if it's well taken care of. I also wouldn't be surprised to see one go 40K with no issues. There's so many factors I'd hate to say more about it.

+Josh Martin I take them as more of a beginner bike than the alternatives. It seems to be as heavy as a DRZ, not as powerful as a WR250R, and the suspension is less adjustable. That being said, i haven't ridden one and you can't really judge a bike on paper. Check out +azdesertdog. He has one and he loves it.

I know this an older vid but just now considering another bike. At around the 5:15 minute mark you said why get the E just get the E just get the S because it has all the street legal stuff. So does that mean in 2007 the S version got all the E performance parts like the bigger header, pumper carb, cams, and higher compression?

  • @HermitDaVlog

No, most bikes are sprung from the factory for 180 so you'll have no problem fitting on most anything. As for power the DRZ is very tame, and kind of in a sweet spot. Powerful enough where it won't stall on you as much as a 250, but not so powerful it will get you in trouble like a wound up 450.

Got one video about it shot already, probably put it out next Thursday. My one bit of caution on it is that it seems to be really high revs at 65, but just fine cruising at 50. I don't see it being great on single track and highway without re-gearing for each. This isn't a problem for me because I don't get on the highway for more than a half mile at a time.

So some things lined up for me and I got a great deal on a 2003 drz400E (klx400r) a week and a half ago. I also own a wr250x that I put 10,000 miles on. I love the wr250x. I also have a set of wr250r wheels for it. I really have no complaints about the wr. But when I bought the drz400e I realized how much more it ripppps then the wr250x/r. It has a good bit more get up and go than the wr250x and it's geared for the highway really bad right now(14/38 stupid previous owner...) I can imagine how much this things rips with a 47t sprocket on the back. I'm debating ordering motard wheels for the drz and making the wr my full time dual sport. both are great bikes though. I haven't decided if I'll keep them both or what. I want to get a lot of seat time before I decide if one is going to be sold. I don't have much seat time on the drz400e yet but I like it so far. I probably wouldn't of picked it up if it was an S model to be honest. sorry for rambling... great video

I rode the DRZ-S for a year and then started favoring the WR250R again. I enjoy the lighter weight and the higher revs of the WR. Riding a slow bike fast is more fun than riding a fast bike slow. I enjoyed the WR more off road sometimes and on road all the time. It was like taking a gocart to the gas station. If I kept both bikes I think I would have got a super-moto setup for the WR and used the DRZ for more longer distance 50/50 dual sport rides. If I could only have one bike I honestly don't know which one I'd keep. If I was 20lbs heavier or lighter it might be an easier call.

Hermit DaVlog yeah I totally understand. I'm in the same boat. I've now converted the E model to a supermoto and my wr250x has been in dirt trim since. They both have there pros and cons. I will say this though.. After riding the 400E for a good while then going back to the wr I realized a few things. The wr is and feels heavier than the E model to me even though the wr holds it weight very well imo. The wr also feels pretty gutless after riding the E. Both great bikes but I'm honestly debating selling/trading the wr for a more street orientated bike like an fz. But I do love the idea of having a motard and dual sport as separate bikes.

I wonder how a DR650 with appropriate suspension upgrades would compare to the KLR vs. DRZ400E, as I am 6'1" tall and over 300 LBS .... I like the idea of a lighter bike which I can "paddle" on the trails and which I might drag out of the mud or over some RR tracks, without inducing a heart-attack. ... Many adventure mods, for the DR650, do include BOLSTERING the sub-frame so as to allow more travel cargo ... I imagine that the DRZ400E would not hold 100+ pounds of gear (with a Green Chile Soft Rack) in a back-country marathon (as one example) .... The research continues .... I sure do like the way ROJO had that IGLOO CUBE Ice Chest mounted on the back of his old KLR .... I would likely rip my pantalones and have a hernia trying to hike my leg over that rig, though. .... Seems like a great grocery-getter and beer-hauler.

Your comment about taking a E model and making it street legal? Not in New Mexico. You'd think it would be a no brainer. Lights, turn signals, mirrors and horn, done. No! In New Mexico, no off road can be made street legal. It depends on the county you ride in if you are allowed to ride a off road vehicle on pavement. I found that out the hard way. Cheers.

You cannot license an E in Georgia even if you put lights on it.

E model is the same from 2000-2023 apart from a couple of small updates common to all drz's. the only "E" model that is different is the california E model which was basically an S model with a plastic tank and non street legal. E models came in street legal versions and non street legal versions, usa only got non street legal versions due to an authoritarian government. Street legal E models have a full subframe, mirrors lights etc if you had the choice between an S model or an E model there's really no reason to choose an s model. the S is a detuned, heavier, cheaper version of the E model and apart from better fuel economy and a cooling fan the E is better in every way.

Why change Cams on an S??? This is the WRONG bike to chase horsepower on! It's great stock. If it's too slow, get a more powerful bike. IMO.

Yep....The DRZ has plenty of power....if you need more, you should have just bought a Dedicated dirt bike in the first place!!(or a more aggressive larger bike) LOL....Coming from street Bikes myself, I can say the DRZ has So much power for me.....never ridden a dirt bike in my life, but I'm USED to 160hp street bikes, the DRZ still does not disappoint On or Off road.

I agree the extra weight and the lack of a pumper carb really hold the S back. Fixing those two things plus a 6th gear would put it in a class of its own.
