Eventually, all curious creek fishermen discover Brook Trout on the fly. This is the benchmark by which you will measure every creek or cold-water river, every rocky pool under shade trees, and every work of art God blesses you with on your flies. This is the creek fisherman's cathedral.

Prettiest fish in Appalachia. Same type creeks I fish so Hats Off to ya for fly fishing those tight spaces, it can be frustrating. The underwater footage was your best yet! Thanks for taking me along, your enthusiasm makes me smile.

Speck trout fishing is a lot of fun. That was some pretty water and quite big for specks.usually we catch them in tiny fast moving clear brooks that are under 4 ft wide. That one fish spilled his guts with his biggest secrete. These fish will hit every strand lizzard/ salamander or whatever you want to call them that they can find. If you are having a tough day when they are refusing dry flies or nymphs look at a forward weighed black wollybugger. The fish can see it as a salamander and it can save you from being skunked.

I used to fly fish for them but I prefer spinning tackle though. The places these little fish inhabit are some of the prettiest in the S. E. These little native Brookies are the most beautiful fish in the country I think. Glad you had a good trip and hope you make another one soon. Thanks for sharing this with us.

I've been coming up to the Southern Appalachians from the bayou country for the better part of 20 years now; I'm so much in love with the area and the fishing, particularly the brook trout, that I bought land in the area. There's just something about it all - the combination of the setting plus the beautiful coloration of the "specs" that makes it so special.

Great job John ... brook trout are a beautiful fish to catch ... that chartreuse humphy you were using as a fly will also catch panfish in those small creeks you fish, I have caught alot of panfish on that fly ... I noticed your fishing buddy was doing bow and arrow casts ... that fiberglass rod will really flex alot to give you a great bow and arrow cast ... It didn't look like you swapped out the fly line you had on your combo for the 3 wgt fly line I sent you ... that 3 wgt Rio Creek I sent you is really designed for those small creeks and will do a great job ... I have it on mine and my wife's 3 wgt fiberglass rods and have been pleased with it ... let me know if you have swapped it out and what you think about it ... one thing about those fiberglass rods ... you have to slow your casting down and let the rod do the work ... with graphite fly rods and graphite conventional rods you can really muscle the rod ... with fiberglass and bamboo rods you have to slow down and let the rod do what it will do, you really can't muscle them ... keep up the good work

Good point! A lot of fishermen completely forget about that...annnnd then they wonder why they don't catch more fish. If you're wading a stream, a creek, or a river, for example, you carefully, and SLOWLY move forwards, instead of pushing ahead with such force, that you scare every fish within 50-100 feet of your location. Believe me, and I'm quite sure that you already know this, but vibrations of people, who move through the water in a careless, and loud, splashing mode of travel, carry a lot farther than people might think. That's one thing that I was taught, early on...move forward SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY! It won't spook the fish nearly as much, as somebody who splashes their way through the water, whether they're moving upstream, or downstream! Using caution, and being as quiet as possible, is the key to successful fishing, when wading!

The brown and brook trout that I catch do not sit there, gasping for a minute after I release them, but quickly swim off. I suspect you may be taking them out of water, and/or handling them a bit too much, which is impairing their ability to escape upon release. That would especially be true if this was a hot summer day and the water temperatures are up. Northern trout anglers will not even fish a stream if the temperature is too high because of the danger of harming the fish.
