Great tutorial - I have the Ed Thigpen brush DVD as well. I usually use the solo break to switch from sticks to brushes (or vice-versa). Like you said, I'll start out with the brushes during the head, then switch to the sticks for the solos (which is where the solo break comes in). Normally, there's a 2 or 4 bar solo break that allows me to switch. I have always put my sticks on the floor tom, but I will have to try putting them under my leg like you mentioned. Either way, great information!

Traditional grip give you better control. What I do is when I rotate the brush around the snare head so I sort of use it like a clock so I can place the accents in various positions. I learned that at a Louis Bellson clinic. You can also use the "sweep and drag". Using traditional grip with both hands may confuse a novice player.

Zack, this is an extremely helpful "Brush" lesson. You have a gift for teaching. Would you please do a video in which you go into more detail on playing doubles (or rolls) with brushes, perhaps with some discussion of positioning the hands and fingers. Many thanks!

Zack, I really like the way you encourage people to play what works for them with the brushes! So many drummers like to say YOU MUST DO abc. Being aware of different techniques is good but personal development of them over a period good. I think. Over a period I found that other peoples original suggested sticking had completely changed and I had made natural adaptions.Thinking too much often spoiled this process.

The brush/stick switch is a technique that Alan Dawson (RIP) used to use. I assume Jeff got it from him as everybody studied with Alan at some point. A great tip whoever came up with it though.
