This is the best brush tutorial I've ever seen!!!! A variety of styles and well explained 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Smooth transitions between brushes and sticks
Definitely the most comprehensive brush tutorial I've come across so far!
Wonderful lesson Zack! The art of brushes is a lifelong study and passion.
as a newbie to brush technique this was excellent. clear explanations with solid examples. thanks a ton.
As a Brazilian, I've never seen a non Brazilian play Bossa and Partido Alto with such naturalness. Congrats!
By far the best instructional video I've ever seen. I have another "brush" gig this Friday and I now have a few more tricks up my sleeve. Thanks Zack
Very nice technique that stands out in great songs.
the best instructor on the net! Zack rules!
Great instruction, clear language and impressive pedagogic objectivity! You're a natural teacher! Congratulations!

Very nice, Zack!
Great video thank you very much. What I was looking for!!
He is a great teacher!
Great Lessons! thanks so much
Very informative, great techniques.
Great tutorial - I have the Ed Thigpen brush DVD as well. I usually use the solo break to switch from sticks to brushes (or vice-versa). Like you said, I'll start out with the brushes during the head, then switch to the sticks for the solos (which is where the solo break comes in). Normally, there's a 2 or 4 bar solo break that allows me to switch. I have always put my sticks on the floor tom, but I will have to try putting them under my leg like you mentioned. Either way, great information!
Great video great teacher
well done. helped a lot!
Great info. Very informative. Thanks
Traditional grip give you better control. What I do is when I rotate the brush around the snare head so I sort of use it like a clock so I can place the accents in various positions. I learned that at a Louis Bellson clinic. You can also use the "sweep and drag". Using traditional grip with both hands may confuse a novice player.
Thanks a lot. This was very helpful
You Sir are a Beast.
Nice stuff! Thanks.
just got my brush's and this helped thx
GOOD JOB!
Thank you ,excellent
Zack, this is an extremely helpful "Brush" lesson. You have a gift for teaching. Would you please do a video in which you go into more detail on playing doubles (or rolls) with brushes, perhaps with some discussion of positioning the hands and fingers. Many thanks!

Susan Comer Thanks for the reply! We'll pass this onto Zack. He's currently in LA but still eager to get back to making some more great content. Thank you for the great reply! -Nate
fantastic video my friend! very good
very good,tnx !
Zack, I really like the way you encourage people to play what works for them with the brushes! So many drummers like to say YOU MUST DO abc. Being aware of different techniques is good but personal development of them over a period good. I think. Over a period I found that other peoples original suggested sticking had completely changed and I had made natural adaptions.Thinking too much often spoiled this process.
Thanks dude for this useful tutorial.

Much appreciated!
The brush/stick switch is a technique that Alan Dawson (RIP) used to use. I assume Jeff got it from him as everybody studied with Alan at some point. A great tip whoever came up with it though.
great lesson zack. this is youtube at its finest. j
what a fucking good teacher
I wish you would do more lessons with online drummer
That's hilarious. I just bought Steve Gadd brushes yesterday and THEN came here and saw that he had them too.
HIGH FIVE man, I also have those brushes
i use brushes for all my high-speed metal double-bass drumming!
Zack packs his video tutorials with a very low fluff:stuff ratio! Check out his tutorial on latin patterns also that can take several months to master!
What setup of Bosphorus cymbals are you using? They sound great!
Why does it have to be sooo HARD to play like that?? Thanx for charing this video!
You make it look so easy but I know better
is there a term for the circular motion you do with the left hand? Ive been just wondering
I have tried several snare heads, but still can not get that sweet sandpaper sound..I have used all the big 3...Remo/Evans/Aquarian...any suggestions?

You have to get a "coated" batter head. They have a rough texture and aren't smooth.

Yes, Brown..all I use. Presently use Jack DeJohnette/Aquarian. These seem to be best so far, next to the Aquarian MV which at times I switch to

Noah Li Actually, I'm wrong about the banded one. All his cymbals are Bosphorus. The one he plays looks like it's from the Turk Series.
Look at his name
