Drummond 1/4hp Utility Pump. Harbor Freight. Review, Modification, and Demo

I bought two of these last fall to pump water out of the low spot in the yard and from our garage where a drain isn't working well. I'll show you what you get and some of the details as well as a quick modification I made to the base.

HUGE HELP! My carport is in the low spot of our property with no drain... The water comes in, doesn't leave. Then it gets above or under the kick plates in the door when it's really storming and welcomes itself into the house. Now that doesn't happen all that time, but, once was enough. I didn't know what to buy, and what HP/Flow to look for. I also didn't know how fast it would drain an area like you had - this is a huge help thank you so much!

I brought a drummund 1/4 horsepower Sump 3 days ago and dug a spot where the water pools but here's the Secret, i took an old window screen and cut to fit around the pump Duct taped it around my sump pump from the bottom to halfway up and wrap that duct tape around it and you got a filter that keeps even little pebbles out, put that sucker in a home depot bucket with lots of drilled 1/3 or 1/4 holes and plant the bucket in the Ground and she comes on when the float rises and gets the job done automatically.

While watching your video, I saw that you PULLED the lock back to release it. The manual says to PRESS them to release the strainer. Ugh! I'm now a new subscriber! Thanks again!

Use window screen to wrap around the bottom of your pump, then duct tape the thing and you got a good filter, i did mine a few days ago and it hasn't torn and filters out anything larger than a little window square.

Thanks, Chad. I'm glad i could help. And definitely shave down those clips before putting the base on. The dang thing is nearly impossible to remove if you don't. Although you probably wont need the base for using it in the basement. Depending how much debris you have i would think just like in ky garage there isn't too much. Without the base it will bet a little more water out because it's closer to the floor. I just set mine up again the other day before a heavy rain and they will probably stay out most of the spring. Thanks for the comment!

I bought this thing for a simple pool cover water removal and it failed after 44 days. In the process of returning it now. Because it’s a pump, it can’t be returned to the store, (sewage, gray water , health issues). It has to filed online with HF. So I can’t say I’d recommend it. I’m going to have to get a cast iron sewage pump to avoid the weaker pumps. Overkill, sure, but I can’t afford to purchase weaker pumps every few months.

I know this is a little old but are you sure its dead? It may just be clogged. I thought mine was dead and I went through the return process & they refunded me. Then I saw a video of someone taking apart a Wayne pump that looks identical, followed the steps & cleared out all the little seed pods & its been working fine ever since!

There is a drain where the pump is sitting in the garage so that spot is lower and that's why it turns on there. But once on it gets the water pretty much down the the last half inch or less.

Sorry to hear. I have 2 of them and both are used regularly and still work. I would think there is a switch inside that may have gone bad or gotten messed up somehow. If it doesnt work already there is no risk in ruining it by opening it up to take a look. Be careful if you plug it in while opened up tho.

Strange thing happened with this exact pump. It turns on and pumps in the bathtub, or a puddle on the ground….it will not turn on to pump rain water off my roof. I suspect the water on the roof is too “soft”, or clean for the electronic sensors to pick up…no mineral content in the water. I put dirt around the pump on the roof and it began to pump water, but it didn’t last long.

I’ve had issues with these working right in cold weather. Seems like water just around 33 degrees, not frozen of course makes them not turn on. Starts with turning on for just a few seconds and then right back off. I’m using it for pool cover pump. Ice and snow just all melted and now won’t turn on. I bring it inside and put it into a sink to test, it turns on and runs just fine. I have two that do the same thing. I don’t know why, but I hope someone can make some suggestions on what could cause this. I’ve also tried different outlets and everything. Also brought out a large bucket of water to test. I can take it off the pool cover and put directly into the bucket and it works fine. Water was from inside so warmer obviously.

I've seem similar issues with a similar pump in frozen weather. I didn't do anything special; when it melted, the pump resumed to working fine. I'd hope that the float switch got frozen in the off position, and the pump never ran. I'd have to look at the directions of mine to see if they say anything about use where the water around the pump could freeze.

Measured the line on thw side of the unit at 1.75 inchs from the bottom. . or slightly more with the base on it. It definitely wont get an area bone dry. Best if there is a low area where water collects that way it will pump out most of it and leave you with a puddle around it in the low spot.
