    I feel like both other heads in this demo choke out quite a bit more under a hard stroke as well. Before this demo I actually couldn't exactly point a finger at why I always preferred Remo, but they do sound more lively in the overtones and seem to react to a good whacking in a more sonically pleasing way.

    I'm an Evans fan but did think that both the Remo and the Code heads sounded better in this particular instance. I don't think the UV1 is really intended to be used on a snare since they have so many snare focused options and I think a standard G1 coated might have been a better comparison. Anyway, I love your thorough testing and honest commentary. Thanks and keep up the excellent reviews!

    I use Evans UV-1's on all my tom batter heads, clear G-1's batter. I tried a UV-1 on one of my snares recently and hated it. I agree, it may not be the best option for a snare drum, but boy do they perform well on toms.

    I've always been a Remo man, having tried examples from all the other major brands (Evans, Aquarian, etc...). They've always given me just what I want, reliably and consistently, and hold up to my playing. In fact, due to budget constraints, my Remos stay on my drums longer than they really should before being swapped out for new ones, and still manage to give me a workable tone. All that said, that Code head may change my mind. I may have to try thier stuff, especially at that price point. Thanks, Nolly!

    To me, listening on studio monitors, they all have similar amounts of overtones spread quite evenly, but the biggest difference is in where the bulk of the initial attack lies. The Remo head has the transient in quite a low frequency spectrum compared to both the Code (slightly higher) and the Evans (which is a fair bit higher up). All great sounds, but slightly different.

    Great review again, although I would have liked you to include an Aquarian equivalent head to see how that fared in comparison to the other three. I actually liked the Evans best on this recording, with the least overtones present. How about a long term test now, use each head for 5 gigs, then repeat the test in a few months with the part worn heads, to see which ones are most durable in the long run ?

    Can't go wrong with the ambassador, though i was surpised with the code head I'll admit, sounded better than I thought an admittedly better than the Evans which just seems kinda choked.. unfortunately that's usually my experience with evans, they just don't have the crisp high end attack of the remos .. its like they have a moon-gel on them at all times, and sometimes I don't want or need a moon-gel on my drums, thus, I choose remo

    I’ve had the Remo. I’ve had the Evans. The sound is close, but the Remo lasts longer. I’m judging from my experience and not video. These all sound great. My acrolite with an ambassador tuned tight works every time. I will add that putting my stretched Evans coated to my cheap wooden pdp snare was still able to be tightened enough to be reused. I am not, however,a fan of wooden snares in any way. The Remo color tone and the Evans hydraulic heads are worthless except for looks...in my opinion. Much love to all drummers. We’re dying out with this snap/clap,electronic,video game, elevator percussion behind every genre of music sounding the same!

    Ive been drumming pro and semi pro for 45 yrs so l believe my ear is pretty well tuned. I also thought the Evans sounded best, then the Remo and lastly the code which sounded flat and wooden to me. Code have lost me anyway as a customer, a snare side head pulled out of the ring when fitted and a coated batter left white coating on my stick tips as soon as it was used. There's a reason they are cheaper.

    I'm normally a Remo and Aquarian guy, I love the sound and durability from their heads (specifically, Aquarian and Remo have far superior hoops, they don't bend and won't pull out of the drum under tension). But I slapped a UV1 on my snare recently and its making me rethink everything...the coating has zero marks on it after a good 10 or so hours of playing time, and it has a great bright responsive sound. I don't even *want* to like Evans, but when shown the differences on this channel through various videos, it almost seems like they have superior resonance and get out of the way of the drum better, which was not at all my previous idea of them. I thought that was always what Remo was best at. Ugh. So very torn.

  • @21DaHoagie12

    You may have gotten the random odd ball decent evans head out of the lot of them.. I work as a drum tech at a music store and every year we switch between the brands cuz management bs etc etc and evans is just the cheapest and crappiest of them all. The reason the coating seems good is because its basically like white out on the head xD it doesn't mark easily but overtime you'll wear staight thru to the clear, which takes way longer with remo in my experience, plus try to clean it with anything industrial or even some rubbing alcohol to remove marks and the coating comes right off and you have to replace the head. Not a problem with remo... but as far as these videos are concerned idk what you're hearing, in both this and the tom video, the evans has the least resonance and dies the quickest, giving the least natural and authentic sound; different headphones/speakers i guess ;D

They all offer their high end kits with Remo heads stock; sure you can ask for Evans, but when they decided not to cut costs and put their best foot forward, they choose Remo for their kits, because Remo is the best.

    I’m an Evans guy (kick excepted) but that UV1 sounded inferior to the others. I’ve yet to try the new UV line and now I won’t. I’ll stick to the standard G1 coated or if the drum needs a bit of taming, a coated Power Center Reverse Dot. Those heads have always performed better than the Remo counterparts to my ears. Any coating left on that Remo by the time you were done with it? It usually doesn’t take much.

    I would like to hear your opinion on something: when recording a snare in a modern rock/metal setting, is more or less ringing a good choice ? My teacher told me once when you kill too many overtones, the snare will not sit/pop as good in a mix compared to more overtones. What is your take on this ?

  • @johncollins5552

    @johncollins5552

    If you lose overtones, you might as well just record an electronic snare pad drum sample.. What has happened is a lot of lazy producers and engineers want to get every snare drum sounding like a a drum machine sample and don't have the time/know how to work and place a real snare sound in a mix.

    On this video and another I have favoured the slightly fuller more controlled sound of the Code head in the lower tuning range, but their durability was always an issue with their first offerings, with the single ply heads being easily pitted. I believe the new gen heads are made from a different material? I agree with one of the comments below that a durability test would be a very welcome addition. I would have stuck with code if they were as durable, but have recently switched back to Remo. having said that at the price, i may will give one of the newer Code DNA heads a few sessions on my snare and see how it stand up over time.

    HR2635 I had the same experience with the last Evans G1 I tried. The snare sounded Amazing for 3 months of maybe 4 to 6 hours per week play time. Then one day .....no tone. I put an old Remo Legacy Ambassador that was worn out but not heavily dented. It had better tone than the brand new Evans. Now I recently tried that still new looking used Evans head and it sounds better on the different drum. I’ll have to try a brand new G1 to complete my experiment. Evans might not be as bad as I thought but hearing the same exact thing happening to you makes me think it’s not an isolated incident in my case. However for the $$$ That Evans charges for the Coated G1 it isn’t a very good value when a Coated Ambassador sells for $8 less in most cases. Knowing you could probably get some use from an older worn out Remo head in an emergency situation gives Remo a much better value and performance rating. Evans says they get their film from the same factories that Remo does but I doubt it. Remo = high grade US made film while the Evans could be second quality or China made.
