@@nerdygamerguy8378 you make a good point for an independent artist. The problem is the character in the movie was at a higher learning institution. He was required to read music. He games the system by not being first which allowed him to memorize the music. Reading music is not difficult. Playing is more difficult than reading but if you want to doore with you talent you have to apply yourself. Drummers that can read and play well have more opportunities.

Yes the percussion section didn't have sheet music in front of them but you're not gonna say that Devon and the other percussionist didn't know how to read music… That's the first thing you learn when you're playing in a high school band it's part of the class learning how to read music. Devon is an ear musician and knows how to play some drum cadences without sheet music.

The importance of reading music has different levels of importance. It depends on what you are doing. To some, having strong enough chops to play what someone shows you has to play is good enough.... some believe that if you can't read it you aren't really playing it.... you are playing at it. Myself, I prefer to have a chart to read. This helps me learn the piece exactly how it should be played AND allows me to repeat the performance. I also prefer to play with musicians that are also reading charts so that everyone involved can fit precisely in the performance. Reading also allows for more effective rehearsal time and allows the musicians to isolate where problems in the music are so they can be worked out. Now, playing by ear is a gift as well. Nothing WRONG with it... but I can imagine that the musician that plays only by ear may feel that "something" is missing or they may not have the confidence that the piece was played exactly as it should be. But, truth be told.... there are many "by ear" musicians that can play circles around the "readers" ..... but they just don't know why the music works like it does.

  • @CCMDrummer

Actually Devon did learn how to read music in high school that's music theory 101 and he would never have learned how to play certain drum cadences without reading some music and his band director in high school knew that. Devon is a "ear" musician one that can play notes by ear... Now we have Devon in college and now he has to prove what he has learned in high school which Devon forgot all about. Playing by ear is good but also reading music is even more important… But the question I have about this scene is what audition did Devon have to actually get accepted in the Atlanta A&T music program? Wouldn't Dr. Lee being a stickler about reading music knew right off the bat that Devon didn't know how to read music?

In the performance it was given that he heard someone showed him or he heard it, but that's not what the point is. He has a talent, but up to this point he has succeeded through talent and nothing else. What his coach was trying to demonstrate was that talent and nothing else will get overshadowed. Plus, even with his bald head you learned as an audience member that he didn't care about rules, structure, or discipline. He only cared about his talent.

He thought he could get away with it for 4 years and rely solely on natural ability. The fact that he acted like a jerk when he got busted made him unlikable during this point.

I don't get it though. Natural Talent is supposed to be the best thing ever. You can't teach natural Talent. I was always told in just about everything that if you have a natural talent for it then you're immediately the best thing ever. And Devin is the best drummer they have. You would think they would overlook him not being able to read music and using his natural ability of being able to memorize beats that are played. Why didn't they just do that

Why do you think so many artist don't own the stuff they have created? You better wake up. Go read the details at the official copyright government website. Once you record something only the sound of what you recorded is available for copyright if you complete the filing. If you don't have the music transcribed you will lose out on the written composition portion and any one can take your music, transcribe it and resale it without you getting a dime. You need to know the law before calling someone a liar.

Your sound and the actual composition have to be filed separately in most cases. Copyright sound doesn't cover the actual music notation.

Learning to read music is a good tool to have in your bag as a musician. I'm not the best at it but if I have to learn something quickly I'm so much better when I can listen and sight sing.

From junior high to high school you have to be able to read music. My daughters band director taught them to sight read. A piece of music you've never seen is put in fromnif you. You're give a few minutes to look over it thennu have to play it. Full time and tempo

For whatever reason, the movie was written in such a way that Devon skated thru middle school and high school without ever learning how to read. For those of us who had good band directors in real life during our preparatory school years, we would have probably been able to read fairly well when we reached collage. I can't imagine any drummer not knowing how to read drum scores. This is because I am a visual learner. However, in the movie, Devon was a auditory learner. He had the ability to learn his parts from watching the other drummers.

@@CCMDrummer i think this is like Hollywood vs reality type stuff, where the movie is trying to emphasize on the inner battle between the less talented but hard working, do it by the book Sean, and the talented but rebellious Devon. They are making it seem like it is possible. There is so many errors in this movie, i don't know where to start from. Just Look into the message that the movie is trying to bring, without checking for the spelling errors of the movie message lol.

I've been a percussionist for nearly 30 years, and like Devin I didn't know how to read when I started. It is to your advantage to have a good sense of rhythm and an ability to play by rote, but to suggest that he's going to learn to read in one hour, that's just plain old ignorant! He will have to put some time and effort into it, but it can be done. The real story here is how deficient dr. Lee was in evaluating candidates. Even though there's no such thing as a marching band "full ride" scholarship, a scholarship of that level would require a great deal of due diligence. It wouldn't be enough to just have a applicant say that they can do something oh, they would have to demonstrate the ability on multiple levels.

@@nickdfoxy because he was playing in a subpar high school program that based on the introduction of the movie, plays 4th grade level material, and plays it poorly. Some people do have the ability to listen, watch, and imitate what they see. It seems that's what Devin had. Up to now, the movie has not been realistic with showing this. There's no way Devin could have learned all of that material unless he had a video or an audio file, but there would have been a lot of rehearsal up until now where it would have been obvious that he can't read on his own. College bands learn a lot of content and usually change shows every one or two weeks, so it would be really hard to get this far into the season. In any case, their rule book does specifically say that they have to know how to read music, so either way, regardless of his playing ability, he does not meet the standards as expressed in the rulebook.
