    There’s a bright side. It’s beautiful there! While you can… that area is, although completely different than anything you’re used to, very Cool indeed for drum recording fun. Looks to me as if, if all goes well… you will soon have a building very unlikely to be taken from you, after forming a bond with it is completed. Hope you can acclimate and soon feel normal there and have fun.

    A nice big double-height drum room like that is just begging for some heavily compressed distant room mics for a massive Bonham sound. I wouldn’t be fighting that big space, I’d be using compression to suck up and saturate it as much as possible for a powerful sound

    Ryan! Best of luck with the new setup. We've been going through major changes also and it's a challenge, but ultimately one that had to happen. Getting out of our comfort zone is like exercise: It may hurt a bit but is good for us! As far as something to try in your new setup, how about a pair of stereo room mics on the floor? Then, either record them with 25 ms delay or add it in post. Since 1ms roughly equals one foot of distance, you can dial in a delay to make the room sound bigger. I saw a video where Steve Albini did something like this with Oktava MK-012 omnis. I've tried it with stereo ribbon and it's kinda cool. Having a great room really helps, and your parents place looks amazing! All my best! chaz

    Hey Ryan, the green screen background looks just fine, dont sweat it. Also, love how vibey your place looks, well maybe because its a lot more relatable haha. I personally love super roomy drums but yes I understand that they wont suit every song, maybe some acoustic treatment or baffles will help.

    Great video, Ryan! I really enjoyed this! Good to see you're getting up and running. I'm looking forward to seeing the progress with your studio build down the line. I always do the 'guerrilla' style recording method where I'm recording in less-than-ideal rooms for a day (especially for drums). Whenever I record drums in loud/reverberant rooms like this, I always put 4-6 4ft x 2ft gobos with insulation that's about 6" thick around the drum kit to dry out the close mics as much as I can, then let the room be as lively as possible and leave it untouched. If I'm using 4 gobos, I put two at the front by the kick angled inwards (leaving a little gap for the kick to more easily go into the room mics), then another two to the left and right of the drums to isolate the drum shells and cymbals from the walls. If I'm using 6 gobos, I put the last two towards the back of the drummer which creates a hexagonal type shape. By putting free-standing gobos around the drums, you're going a long way to add more focus to the close mics so they're not washy because of the room tainting them. I've found it does a bit to help with the overheads, too. Recording in a room of that size will eliminate the risk of any prangy flutter echo in the room mics though!

    I'd say overheads and room Mics are an excellent place to start. I've personally been experimenting with a drum a bus. with that ive been using compression and a limiter to get some solid audio through the headphones, with only intention to develop the my individual stems. which might possibly lead to the drums being minx in place. whatever is required for the specific piece of music or part.

  • @revoxed93
    @revoxed93 Жыл бұрын

    I wonder if you bring the OH mics a little closer to the drums, even though it might not be your typical approach it could possibly help get the cymbals and snare a little less roomy sounding, also the stereo room mic could be lowered a lot more and you can experiment with a delay to give a farther away sound if you like that, but with less reflections overall because the mic is closer to the source before you add delay which wouldn't add that part of the sound you might not like. I record in weird rooms all the time, so there is some trial and experimentation which can be a lot of fun...there is always drum enhancement with samples too like with slate trigger. Love the videos!!

    This is pretty much my dream house, where I can get a good drum sound and not have to have a dedicated studio to do so. I would just build a frame that could go over the drums and put some heavy blankets over the top/sides if you want dryer overheads. That is an easy problem to solve, but you can't create a large room from a small one.

  • @biggsoft6910
    @biggsoft6910 Жыл бұрын

    Maybe try a makeshift acoustic cloud over the drums or if not possible, maybe even just a foam behind the overhead mic (stuck through the stand maybe)? I was wondering if this would make the overheads a little tighter and different compared to the actual room mic. Also, I've found that sometimes mono overhead placed Ringo-style is less roomy. Maybe mono oh vs stereo room is okey? Thanks for a nice video!

    Ryan, this video hits very close to home. I have a small home studio setup where I am constantly dealing with acoustic issues. My drums, tape machine, console are in a really small room connected to a huge living area. I have chosen to live with the "live" drum room sound (which works well enough with my garage rock style) because the thought of sound proofing my house would be not only costly but not so great looking on the eyes. After a while you learn to embrace the uglyness in your favor, a la "Shitty is Pretty". I started making some tutorial videos of my own. I think a video detailing my constant issues with room sound and how I get around it would be an insightful addition to the list of videos. Cheers, Mario

    I build and sell gobos to various people and studios. The folks who buy them and myself included use them for taming rooms, and in some cases adding life to dead rooms. They're fairly simple to make and they cost very little to build. If you have to buy them they're pretty expensive. Have you ever tried using free standing gobos/acoustic treatment? You can move them anywhere you want, and they don't have to be drilled into a wall.

    @@Mario_DiSanto I use various insulation batting materials: Owens Corning Thermofiber - Fire And Sound, Roxul Safe and Sound, Owens Corning 703/705. They typically come in 3 inch thick 14-24 inch wide and 48 inch tall batts. They are sold with usually 10-12 insulation panels per package. The Owens Corning Thermofiber Fire and Safe is my most favored as it's cheaper, but overall better for my purposes. If I'm taming reflections I use a single panel of the insulation and I frame it with 3 or 4 inch wide lumber. The lumber I buy is the inexpensive white pine (usually) that is 1''x3''x8'. If they have the 10 foot long boards I buy those as it's more cost effective. If I want more sound isolation, bass trapping, and taming reflections I use 2 or 3 of the insulation panels to make it 6''-9'' thick. The lumber I frame it in with is the same width as the insulation. If it's 6'' of insulation I frame it with 1x6'' boards (bought as 1''x6''x8'.) If the insulation is 9'' I frame it with 1''x10''. I cover them all with cloth front and back so the sound can get in and out. You can find all sorts of videos on how to build the frames with the insulation. If you want them free standing just add a couple planks of wood at the bottom for feet so they will remain standing upright.
