This was a great video with a great editing, especially thinking that you have 34 subs:)

Hey there. I’m 2 weeks into drumming. I’ve watched many KZread videos etc. on so many drum topics. I was wondering if you considered cutting a port hole into your tom resos? I do like the tp idea, and saw where others suggested cotton balls. I have the luxury of my new kit (Tama 7pc SuperStar Classic) with stock heads that I can use my resos as Guinea Pigs. In that, I’m planning to cut a port in the toms and using same diameter (mason jar lid) template. This should show how much “breathing” different size toms respond to same hole. If I don’t like the porting, I can always try internal muffling when I replace the stocks. 👍

Why would you cut a port in your tom head?

@@Dom-gk9ku that’s a high possible plan. I thought yes/no. But realized last night various kits bass drum have a ported reso head. I don’t think that’s specifically for micing. That because just purchasing a kit does NOT mean you’re gonna record etc. so porting must have affects on vibration control. I’m a nubie- and as I see some pple say yes some say no. But since I have stock heads, I can experiment on these and make a plan for whenever I replace battar and resos. There’s tons of ways of this and that. I’m in a big ocean swimming toward so many ideas lol

That's interesting, to try the port on toms. I've never considered it but would be curious of the effect. It would give new mic position opportunities at least but I wonder if cutting a hole would just stop all resonance, and you're just left with the sound of your batter head and it's tuning alone. Tom size might play a roll there. I like toilet paper inside my toms just to lightly cut the resonance but i don't wanna get rid of ALL of it. I'll tune the reso head a touch lower pitch than my top usually. I guess the difference with kick vs tom is that the port is in the kick because of needing to get ideal mic positioning generally. The toms are usually mic'd from top, so no need for a port. However, I've seen guys have no reso head at all live and mic under the batter head. Seems to be a thing that was done more in years past then now, though. I never knew the reason for it. I've also heard of no reso head in the studio but I'm not sure if the intention was to get a specific type of different or unique sound or to just get clear tone without compromise from the reso head. I guess theoretically you could use the batter head only and use muffling on it, and then add resonance with a plugin of choice in the DAW. Never tried, though. If you try the port in the reso, make a video!! 🤘

@samdavparsley8266 Also, I agree there is an effect from the reso head on the sound so it's not just a benefit for micing the drum. I use the reso head for its effect much more on toms, thought. I actually get my tone from my reso head for sure. It's a great thing to consider experimenting with the reso head! Tuning in coordination with the batter, different thickness vs the batter, etc. A lot of combinations 🤘

@@JakeLovesMusic7 I don’t know anything about recording or studio. I’m 2 weeks in now so I don’t know doo doo. Lol But again you can buy pre-ported kick resos. I don’t necessarily think they are sold for mic purposes. I did my brief sessions yesterday and will again everyday until I can play a lot longer. But I was thinking I like the sound/tuning as is- stock Tama stuff. However I learned years and years ago as a photographer printing etc. you acclimate pretty quickly and accept. I think I’m at that stage 2 weeks in. Regardless, I might even just port 1 tom and compare tune notes (app- iTuner). And just go with it and decide other toms. Like I mentioned I have the luxury of STOCK heads so replacing later is coming anyway. 8” tom- and I was really thinking of proportionality of this vs. 22” kick. Lol.. man I analyze as much as a newbie as I can! Lol I’ll keep you all posted- I probably should post something drums to my KZread page any way👍

2 resonate heads (butchered) ported. Don't laugh too much- On the bright side, that is aside from everything- my Session DR15🥁sounds a bit like drumming.
