One of my favorite druids was a game starting character from a while back. My friend and I were getting ready to start a long campaign and decided to try and create a fun duo to add to the party. He created a dwarven fighter that was specialized and obsessed with mechination and steel work. So I created a half elf druid to be the other half. We took some liberties with class description, especially with the druid. Basically, his character and mine were best friends. His dwarf was fascinated by the concept of evolution and how nature would change to solve it's own problems. My druid was enthralled by cities and the creations of intelligent races. We justified this by saying that his dwarf recognized that he could not mold and craft without the forces and complexities of nature, whether he we using fire to forge or wind to sail, etc. My druid viewed cities and machines as just another by product of nature. How is that tower, built by a human, any different that a nest built by a bird? It was a lot of fun from a role playing perspective and also at later levels had quite a bit of functionality.

This is how I RP my war forged druid. My DM brought up how contradictory it is to be a druid that is literally made out of metal, and I just pointed out that Metal is still a product of nature even if it is a product of humans. In a sense, the War Forged are one of Nature's most complex and interesting creations.

  • @DoctorFireFarts

    @DoctorFireFarts

@@longdangley Well, full disclosure, I based the character very loosely off of the MTG card "Golos, Tireless Pilgrim" and have made him to be essentially that, a pilgrim that never needs to stop for food or water, is on alert when resting, and can cross bodies of water easily since he doesn't need to breath. His aptitude with nature comes from centuries of traveling the land after abandoning his post when he gained sentience, and over the years has learned to accept the origin of his creation and focus on attuning himself with the land. It's still a work in progress as I've only played him in a one-shot, so I'll flesh out the story a bit more when he gets dropped into a full campaign. I like that take on it, though. Would make for a very interesting city dweller druid.

Rage itself states concentration can't be maintained. Wolf would be better because your going to want to level mostly druid and wolf totem is advantage for nearby allies attacks which makes your summons better by hitting more. However caveat to this kind of build, do it for flavor and not power. The two classes are stronger single class. They have the strongest level 20 capstone abilities there are. The Druid also gives up the strong abilities of casting while shape changed (with a couple restrictions) and Moon Druids give up attaining CR6 forms

We were facing a balor in the Underdark, way under level. We were supposed to be running from it, but our Druid decided he wasn't going to run, so he cast Erupting Earth on the ceiling causing the cave to collapse on the balor, then cast entangle on the rocks. So, yeah. Our level 8 Druid solo'd a balor. Like a freaking boss. Another fun thing to do with Polymorph and wildshape is to turn into a giant eagle, grab an enemy, fly upabove the rest of the enemies, dropping wildshape, polymorphing the enemy into a whale, and wildshaping back. There are few things more satisfying that whale-bombing your foes.

My druid, Torgga Craghelm (hill dwarf) was raised to love smithing and mining, in the tradition of her clan. However, she always felt more connected to the beasts and plants of the deep caves and foothills. When she came of age, her father surprised her by arranging for her to join a local druid circle, she left her home for a life of service to nature. A year later she returned to find her village destroyed. She tracked the group of raiders and eventually found them, a savage band of goblins and kobolds led by a creature she did not recognize but which wore her ancestral shield (the one that her many-times-great grandfather had forged when they settled in the valley and which had hung above her family's hearth since she was a child) as a breastplate. Her fists clenched in rage as tears stung her eyes. He vision was drowned in red and black. The next thing she knew she was on her back, staring up at a cloudy sky just starting to rain. Her shoulder hurt, she reached up and felt it, when she looked at it it was slick with blood, and was not a hand but a large bear's paw. Before her very eyes it shrank, the hair receding into her skin, the gore-stained claws becoming fingernails. The pain in her shoulder ceased. She stood shakily, looking around. The camp was in ruins. Tents and shelters lay in heaps of rubble. Bodies, parts of bodies and unrecognizable piles of gore littered the site. All was carnage and desolation. She vomited, and saw several goblinoid fingers in the sick. She retched again and again until nothing was left. She searched the scene for the remains of the thing wearing her family's shield. It was not there, it had escaped. With nowhere else to go she returned to her circle. Her mentor sensed her recent rage and admonished her that emotion must never drive her actions, balance was what kept them from descending into the mindless, savage outbursts of the barbarian. He sent her to meditate while he conferred with the circle to decide what to do with her. She decided not to wait for their verdict. Taking what she could carry she abandoned the only family left to her, she went out into the world swearing vengeance upon that creature which had taken everything from her. So that's her backstory. She dislikes goblins and kobolds, but was forced to save a town of goblins in the first mission of the campaign (far in the future, more civilized but still clearly goblins) because she found common ground with their desire to save their town and families. She does not adopt animal forms unless under severe stress or as a reaction of sustaining heavy trauma, she took to heart her mentor's warning about succumbing to her emotions. In a recent prize-fight against a barbarian she used strategy and pushed him out of the ring with repeated thunderwaves instead of using wildshape to easily best him in combat. The only time she has wildshaped was when she had been beaten unconscious and healed. Afterwards she was very upset and had to be restrained from beating a prisoner to death so that the party could get information. For my roleplay the DM gave me auto-success on intimidation checks during the interrogation. Angry dwarf lady wins!

A couple of important points to mention about Circle of Dreams - specifically the Balm of the Summer Court power: First, it's useable at a range of 120 feet, and only requires a bonus action. This makes it something like a Cure Wounds spell (albeit a little less potent), but doesn't require touch - giving it a huge tactical advantage. This is especially true when an ally falls; you can typically get to them for healing before they even get to their first death save. Secondly, because it is a class feature and not a spell, you can use it while Wild Shaped. This means you can take the opposite tactic: take on wild form and fight alongside your melee combatants, utilizing your Balm of the Summer Court healing dice at the start of the fight. Then, once your beast form's hit points start to dwindle, you fall back and take on a more passive roll as a healer with traditional spells like Cure Wounds, Healing Word, etc. Either way, I consider Dream Druids among the best healers in the game. Their often whimsical nature also makes them a bright and fun addition to a party when it comes to roleplaying.

Thanks Dude’s! This is by FAR the best druid class explanation I’ve seen, and has really clarified for me what the role of the druid is. Already watched twice and probably will again. This has sparked heaps of character ideas. How about a forest gnome with faction agent background, who is a messenger boy for the Emerald Enclave? They could even have him deliver a sealed message to an adventuring party that reads “Please give this young druid some life experience in the wider world”. I know a gnome is not ideal for a druid, but I really like the idea of a character that is not at all intimidating, that when cornered can turn into something truly terrifying... Keep up the great work guys!

For a more modern spin on druids, there's Atticus O' Sullivan of the Iron Druid Chronicles. And he's also an interesting juxtaposition against Harry Dresden. Dresden can't help saving people. He's a chronic hero. Atticus on the other hand cares more about nature than people. He'll express sorrow for people he knows that got caught in the crossfire, but on the whole he really doesn't care what happens to people until nature itself is threatened. So that's a good inspiration for how to play the expected Neutral alignment of druids.

Moon Druid Barbarian multiclass: it is totally ridiculous. Raging bear with unarmoured defense, extra damage and reckless attack are just insane. Not to mention the resistance to damage while having an extra stack of hit points on top of your normal hit points. Currently playing one and it is a blast. Really fun to have a super wise barbarian who's rage is so in tune with nature it makes him turn into a bear. (At least that is how I play him). Normally I'm not really a munchkin, but this one is both conceptually awesome and mechanically super powerful.

Druid is my favorite class to play. The usual role playing approach I have is that there is something upsetting the balance and I am going out to try and reset the balance. I am not really into the shapeshifting side of the druid for combat as much as having nature assist me, such as entangle and summoning. I am the mediator between nature and society.

This really did bring light to the idea of my beloved Druid I’m starting to play in our Curse of Strahd campaign. His name is Madrid and he’s actually a tiefling, in which I did keep in mind on “How could a devil cursed line possibly be a druid?” Well, he is highly in tune with the chaotic natural drives in nature that you guys talked about. Not necessarily violence, but more with passions, lust, need and greed that comes with food, a mate and with survival. His story is pretty complicated I’d say but I worked with my DM and we have his basics set in the story now. Thank you so much for continuing making super useful videos on your insights on parts and pieces of D&D!!

I'm the druid for my group's campaign. I Just wanted to comment that I loved your video and it made me want to look a little closer at the spells that I bring to the table for my group. I'm currently level 7(the rest of my group is lv5 or lv6) and one of the front line characters in the party. My main focus is damage dealing. I don't need to heal much, since we have a cleric dedicated to it, as well as a bard(she mostly does crowd control/buffs with backup heals). My character is from a long forgotten island where he worked as part of the militia protecting the island, with a focus on keeping the more dangerous wildlife away from the inhabited areas. Now that he's off on his adventure, his main quirk is he doesn't really understand just how powerful he is, and sometimes goes a bit overboard with powerful magic, when something more...simple would suffice. Think casting Tidal Wave when Create or Destroy Water would work just fine. He also sees himself(especially when backed by his friends) as more powerful than he actually is, so he tends to disregard stealth in favor of just going nuts.

My other friend who was the DM sabotaged our plan. So I was supposed to distract them by flaling my arms and legs, then once they noticed me I woukd turn into a cheetah and lead them away from my friend. It worked but they were apparently faster than me, and ended up catching up. So, I morphed into a mole to hide underground, then next a bird to fly away when they coukdnt find me. Thanks for the video guys, great work. Two comments. I was a bit surprised that it wasn’t mentioned one of the most (I think) ridiculous aspects of shapeshifting HP Pool. The fact that if the Druid is “killed” in animal form the revert back and only take any carry over damage. That to me is crazy especially when you play for bear tank style. To you point of savage druids. I’m currently playing Trag a Half-Orc Druid with a circle of the shepherd subclass. As you describe he understands that nature is a brutal place. It isn’t a world where words or politics makes headway, it is a world where the strong, cunning, and crafty survive and ultimately thrive. And yet it is also a place where life and death are in balance and there is as much to be found in the celebration of bringing something into the world as there is when something goes out. I really like the tribal aspects that tie into the Half-orc heritage (his back story includes growing up in a full orc clan). I also like the subtle shift off of the classic Shaman that would exist in an Orc tribe. I worked with the DM to decide that the Druid of the clan was not a common thing and only came around every few generations - someone from the clan with the aptitude for it. It has been really fun to play a Druid who uses shapeshift much more for utility and relies on the summoning of creatures and buffing of allies as a kind of war commander style. Thanks again, and keep up the great work.

Circle of the moon ftw, especially at level 18+. I have a circle of the moon druid that I made for a high level one-shot and she is pretty much unstoppable. At higher level she almost never use her magic in battle, her array of shape shift form capable of adapting to any enemy that the party encounters. Cons doesn't matter that much for her as she can just shape shift into something that have a ton of cons score. She can be the secondary tank for the party and just use her spell mostly out of combat or in wild form using beast spell once in a while. Because of wild form, I find myself using more concentration spell more than other spell casting class before I get the ability to cast magic in wild form. After I saw your ranger video I have a thought that monster hunter ranger is a great match with moon circle druid for RP. Imagine, someone who know all about the monster he/she encounter and then transform as something that are the natural enemy of that monster. Sadly I don't think that I will be making any multiclass druid any time soon. That 20th level feature is really really strong and usefull. Even if I don't play them until they reach level 20, I like to think that they still continues to go to adventure but I don't see it. So I always make the 20th level character sheet for them and I want my druid achieve that feature.

Just started playing as a spore druid! My character has a dark history but no one in my party knows yet. Great video as I'm just hitting level 3 so im excited to look into the spells mentioned!

I'm doing something similar but he was killed in battle and after many years the forest regrew and the spirits reawakened him to be it's guardian, and he is trying to atone for the destruction and death he brought forth when he was alive

From movies, the women from In the Name of the King, that protect the forests basically controlling all the vines as weapons and transportation. But I myself love that in my group's aquatic adventure I saved my ship's crew as the ship was sinking by casting Conjure Animals to summon Dolphins then become a Giant Squid, to drop defensive ink to cover our get-a-way as the other ship came looking for us. ;)

I feel like it was a missed opportunity for the intro to not be "Perfectly balanced... as all things should be."

So much fun has been had by my rogue with the party druid giving him Magic Stones to use in his sneak attacks with his sling.
