really? that's worse than enabling them to further feed their addiction? as a former addict I disagree. Addicts shame and isolate themselves just fine on their own. Yes it is sad and it's hard to watch, but I know a person does not quit until they are ready to quit. Some never are.

I spent over 2 decades of my life shooting smack. If my mother would've given up on me I would've without question nor hesitation made up a fatal shot & shed my mortal coil. Most addicts need love, even when they can't REALLY feel it...only in the very rare case would i say push someone away, like if they're stealing everything that they can sell or are abusive...& that's >5% of addicts in my experience, we punish ourselves before others...family become innocent bystanders. My experience is with Donna on this one :) 1love

@@briangrussing9327 We're all different. I agree that knowing you are loved by someone certainly does help, it did in my case. But many people don't need much support from others. What helped me the most was honesty from my loved ones, whether I liked hearing it or not. It eventually did get through and I was able to quit. I believe that enabling addicts and not holding them accountable is much worse in the long run than a little tough love.

The american media has done a fantastic job at dehumanizing addicts and advocating for throwing them away and then stigmatizing both the people who lose the battle in their addictions and those who overcome it. I was never, ever taught in school to be compassionate towards drug users. The only things they showed me in school and billboards were people with messed up faces and horrible conditions caused by their addictions telling me to never become like them. It took until adulthood for me to actually see them as normal people who screwed up and can change with compassion and support from others. The opposite of what we give them

Helping drug users who are in trouble is one thing. But getting the production of these substances out of the hands of criminals is another. Drugs are the main source of income for criminals. This should be stopped. Most politicians make the mistake to think that total prohibition will work. But it does not, and only makes it more uncontrollable. 40 Years of failed enforcement policies have proven this. Not only in the US but everywhere in the world. The only way is legalisation, and regulation by government.

There is nothing we can do to change the past, but to build a brighter future we cannot let monopolies run our country. How many companies have kicked farmers out with decades of experience in the fields in favor of GMO crops grown by amateurs? How many Mcdonalds do we allow them to continue to build when obesity rates are so high, with a high correlation of hospital visits in the future? Do we let Apple continue to sell 1000$ phones? These monopolies feed off of each other, and the best comparison would be a cancer latching on to its host. All we do is to continue to feed these companies, letting them expand, destroy nature to build, and support them with our cash. We have to stop their bubble from getting bigger, and rather make all bubbles the same size.

You cannot be truly passionate about anything that harms people without empathy. I wish a Democratic nominee were running on THIS platform, if for nothing else to raise awareness or rather, force them to pay attention to it. Addiction is either linked to trauma/pain or chemical imbalance (like lack of dopamine production/reuptake) We must elect people to congress who care about these issues and will at least try their best to make changes which will resort in less suffering. But first, we have to have empathy. Our current President lacks empathy in a major, extreme way. It terrifies me.

Amen. I wrote my master's thesis on this very issue. I would be really interested in collaborating on this subject. I earned my social work degree in illinois.... with "young men at risk" aka teens sometimes pre teens mostly Latino and African American boys who were being literally ROBBED of their adolescence but even more egregiously, their humanity. I wept many nights feeling completely impotent as attempt after attempt to even bring the subject of institutionalized racism up was met with attitudes im still trying to recover from as some of the worst were people closest to me personally and professionally. I still shudder as a female colleague gave me a backhanded compliment saying she was glad there were people like me to "deal" with these issues because she would have "rounded them up and gassed them" and by "them" I pointed out to her in utter horror that "them" is often someone's child, little brother, cousin, etc who is highly likely to be more innocent than not, in a wrong place-wrong time-wrong crowd situation that still isn't quite sure what part of their experience was at fault for literally ripping away any chance he should have had to live the life anyone is born with the right to at least have a chance to live. The shrugged shoulders and oh well facial expression that was returned in response, to this day has deeply affected my ability to maintain any sort of functioning relationship with this person whom I had thought beyond near and dear to me but a clear and unmistakable example of what I would be and have been up against ever since. Kudos to you for your courage, your work and your passion. It's nice to know I wasn't alone after all. And there's more to my story that parallels yours than this. Blessings strength and courage to you, kindred soul.

Rehab don't work for anyone that has nothing to Return to accept addiction when walking out the doors. Understanding and Undoing what does not work. Everywhere I have ever worked the most productive and creative people couldn't pass a U.A. and this economy has suffered since the early 90's when companys started piss testing. Granted some users lose control. Most don't. Try comparing the numbers just in your circle. That was amazing.. hopefully people will wake up to this on mass... especially how the war on drugs has systematically attacked a certain group of people..how to work towards correcting this...prison is BIG BUSINESS and while they are making bank on prison business they are continuing to keep that group of people under their heel..I hope for a real change but don't expect it to change...it is too beneficial to tptb...mass awakening!

Simply make that which is illegal legal and the problem will magically be resolved. Comparing Portugal to the United States? No single country can be related to the United States. I do not say that in the rah-rah way of 'Murica! There simply no other country that is like this country. Further, comparing the EU to the US does not work either. Unfortunately, I do not have a solution to this situation. However, I do not believe that simply making all of this legal will change things. Alcohol is legal, yet the US has a serious problem with alcoholism. This just does not make sense.

nana delamer site your sources: My dad quit on his own but will be the first to admit that he was never a real alcoholic, just had a drinking problem at one point. If in doubt, continue to explore your self will power and the misery most of us suffer that accompanies it. FYI ..... Drinking was not my problem, sobriety was and a good program helps you with that not the other way around.

2 minutes in and I turned it off. You can't responsibly use drugs with kids in the house. where i live you can be charged for that and kids turned over to state authorities. If you abuse legal drugs you are treated the same way. Who would honestly let their child play in or visit a recreational drug users house? Don't mind that hypodermic needle Bobby, that's just my meth kit.

Many parents I know go home after work and have a glass of wine without fear of police retaliation. Even more parents wake up to a cup of coffee, all being very responsible individuals. So yes. you can be a responsible drug user with kids in the house.

Adam Hammer You sir deserve an award for common sense. Most people don't understand that alcohol is a drug. Let alone a legal one and in many areas more parents drink than don't. In my personal experience I have known many people who are able to be productive and take care of their kids while high on several different illegal substances better than they can drunk. And in no way am I promoting drug use around children. I am simply stating my experiences. And yes, drug use can become a serious problem.

Uhhh hold up. So like. If a dad smoked a single joint, he's a terrible dude who needs his kids taken away, but if a mom or dad or guardian gets absolutely trashed on whiskey every night, that's totally fine, as long as he doesn't abuse the kid? M'kay
