Drop Redoubt Fort, Western Heights, Dover.

#Dover #WesternHeights #Fortification
The Drop Redoubt is one of the two forts on Western Heights; the other being the Citadel, the two are linked by a massive series of dry moats.
Arguably the most impressive and immediately noticeable feature on Dover’s Western Heights. The artillery at the Redoubt faced mostly inland - it was intended to attack an invading force attempting to capture Dover from the north-east.
Today the Drop Redoubt is under the care of English Heritage.
For more information regarding open days at the Drop Redoubt please take a look the Western Heights Preservation Society website..

The work that must have gone into constructing these places is incredible! I'm sure if they'd been needed they'd have done their job. Thanks for watching, plenty more where that came from 😊👍

Excellent presentation, well done guys, feels like we were there walking alongside you. Keep them coming! Although few (if any?) of these forts saw action, their sheer robust size and formidable presence would have been enough to deter attack, so in this respect they served their purpose well, in addition to billeting soldiers. How warm and comfortable they were inside is another matter! Plymouth has similar imposing structures (Palmerston Forts, otherwise known as "Follies") positioned around the coast and inland to protect the large naval base, also used during WW1 and 2 as gun batteries, and searchlight positions during WW2. Some of these forts have been converted to popular wedding venues with wonderful views over the south coast. The Barbican facing walls of Plymouth's Royal Citadel (commanding the Hoe) have been upgraded and expanded over the last 20 years, still in use by the Royal Artillery Commando.

Yes its a similar story with most of the British fortifications.. from huge Redoubts down to the humble pillbox, they may not have actually seen any action but their sheer size or quantity certainly put off anyone thinking of invading.. We've been to a couple of the Palmerston forts along the Thames and Medway and they are really quite amazing places to explore unfortunately the ones we've been to have been left to ruin 😔 Thanks for watching and commenting, glad you enjoyed it 👍😊
