After disbanding in the mid-90s, singer Greg Ackell decided he would never make music again. They’d had a great run. They’d shared stages with Radiohead, Hole, Blur, PJ Harvey, and Smashing Pumpkins. They went from being teenagers in Boston to mid-twenty-somethings with a few MTV videos, a couple BBC sessions, and numerous festival appearances under their belt. So when Drop Nineteens ceased to be, Ackell felt content. He had the rest of his life in front of him to figure out what he wanted to do. Music was a closed chapter.
That was until 2021, Ackell for the first time after nearly 30 years decided to pick up the guitar with intent. Shortly after this, he immediately called Steve Zimmerman, the band's bassist and fellow guitarist, and got writing. It felt effortless for Ackell like he never stopped writing music. The first task of making 'Hard Light' was getting the rest of the band back together (Zimmerman, Paula Kelley, Motohiro Yasue, and Peter Koeplin). The record came together over the course of a year, recording at a patchwork of studios all around the country: Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles. Making music together felt natural, fluid, and exciting. The result was a modern Drop Nineteens record that is completely singular in its sound and vision. Drop Nineteens have brought clarity and cool in 2023 to the genre they helped create. A portrait of a band 30 years later, as talented and dedicated to their craft as ever.

Lyrics:
Tell me when there is danger
It probably won’t matter to me
On the face we are strangers
To what you’d hoped they would be
Shallow wrecks from the bottom
Better left than picked up and remembered
But I remember
Cold dew from the mountain
Flows down through you
Not for the first time
Turned tears into oceans so blue and clear
That I surrender on cue
Nights after this will align
As if not to miss you’re alive
At the end of a game changer
Where you’ve been and won’t go
I really just figured it out
What James meant by all my friends
It’s a trade so much better never made
And it follows and it follows
The truth long forgotten comes due
And you say it’s the last time ha!
This fear that you’re tender
And black and blue
Will temper tempers
Nights after this might connive
Not to be missed or alright at all

being silent for 30 years and then against all odds coming out with an inspired and soul-touching song like this one. Life can be so beautiful sometimes.

"well, i am excited of course but let's not get your battered hopes up again eh?" 4 mins later "christ" repeat that asap
Drop Ninteeen, Slowdive and Blonde Redhead making a comeback in 2023 was certainly not in bingo card. I am happy though, D19's album is fantastic from start to end.
I was playing your music in Tahiti back in 1992 in my radio shows there. I played this one tonight in my actual radio show
Saw this band live at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. It might have been the best small venue show I have ever seen. 100 fifteen-year-old kids with 500 guitars pissing on Sonic Youth. Glorious!
Welcome back. You've been missed but never forgotten.
And these guys haven’t lost a single beat in 30 years. Fucking rare. Love it.

it's mad! I can't name any other musician that's come back and been just as magical, there's always something off even if it's just the quality of the production. but this is perfect.
The comeback is real
A song with a sensibility you rarely hear nowadays
A return to their Shoegaze roots. Great to hear! Please tour the UK. I WILL COME
well i bought delaware 30 years ago and here we are, it´s been a minute. love the song.
How I missed out on this band back in the day is beyond me , but I’m here now .see you tonight @union transfer in Philly!!!
This brought me to tears. I really never thought they'd be anymore music. ❤️
OMG this is amazing - feels like 1994. These guys do not miss a beat!
Between this and the new Slowdive record, 2023 is looking to be a great year to be a shoegaze fan.

Best release of the OG bunch, imo. They nailed this record.

This reminds me of the feeling when you put on your favorite trusty fall/winter coat that has carried you safely thru so many past seasons great and tough. It is perfect, familiar and infinitely soothing . They are an inspiration to produce music after 30 years gone.

We desperately needed something like this 😢 what a beautiful song
Could’ve told me this was an unreleased track from the 90’s and I’d believe it. Haven’t skipped a beat at all. So excited to see them in Boston in a couple of months!
Funny how 30 years seems like yesterday... Absolutely love this and I'm so glad they got back together. In 1992, I was 16 when I first heard "Kick the Tragedy" and that song got me hooked. I still listen to it, even to this day. But this new song brings me back to that time and I've been playing it non-stop. Thank you Drop Nineteens, can't wait to hear the full album!
