    Such great informative high quality content. The BEST on KZread. Curious, what's your process for setting your elevation for your clients that need to work with your survey data? Do you work in NAD83 (state plane) horizontal coordinate system along with NAV88 vertical datum using a geoid to obtain orthometric heights? What do you tie to for your vertical readings? A nearby benchmark? Or are you just basing everything off of ellipsoidal height and your control points? Thanks!!!

    First: You guys make great videos!!! At this video it looks like you compare the LiDAR point cloud with the 3D mesh model from photogrammetry (based on pc)... How does the photogrammetry point cloud looks like? This would be the right comparison in my opinion. Even with the "not so great" Inspire Camera Setup (for photogrammetry) you should get a point cloud which delivers more information then the bad looking drone deploy mesh model.

  • @jeremynicoletti9060

    @jeremynicoletti9060

    I had this question, too. If you're doing an apples to apples comparison then look at the point clouds. I'm curious if there is an accuracy advantage to using LiDAR over good photogrammetry algorithms because I've been able to get very good accuracy with photogrammetric setups.

  • @BRC3

    I've used photogrammetry from the Phantom 4 Pro v2 to create point clouds in Pix4d. There is definitely 'fine detail' material missing when it comes to the conversion. In an example, I use the Leica GS18 to measure the corner of where the flat concrete edge of a sealed road meets the front face of the kerb; we call this the Channel. Our GPS gets accuracy of +-0.02m. Photogrammetry picks up the flat edges pretty well but, not the corner. There isn't enough information, converting to point cloud points within that small area from photogrammetry, to place a horizontal and vertical marker/point right in the corner. It comes down to how precise you need your information to be. Of course, you can extrapolate the corner by triangulation, if needs be, but then that's extra processing time. Lidar can spit out anywhere from 250,000 points per second, depending on the unit used. Way more information!

    But however, if you use lidar data to compensate photogrammetry, you can get a sharp, crisp yet real coloured point cloud, and this can help to compensate missing edges and discolourations, especially if you know how to write up python code to do close neighbour averaging for the point cloud data, then you can have something close to what very expensive software such as pointfuse can do to generate preserved edge convex 3d models that have close photorealism. I know this comment is very old now but I just want to point out, since I ever did this myself when I worked on a 3d web project utilising this method, since a lot of the data the team provide (I wasn't the main operator for the scanner) was missing in details and I match them up this way and generated the models

    Nice comparison. I am not aware about the mission parameters of the photogrammetry flight, but from the result I guess that you were using a single camera in NADIR direction. When it comes to modelling 3D buildings, many people recommend off-NADIR (oblique angle) captures. These days, readily available payloads with 4-5 cameras looking at different directions simultaneously may be much more appropriate for the featured application. And their price of around 4000-5000 USD is still cheaper than the price of UAV lidar systems (DJI Zenmuse L1 ~18000 USD)...

    Hi great video, I would like to mention that IMO you could be using a better photogrammetry setup, you are comparing a high-end quality lidar system (among the different lidar possiblities) vs a more or less mid-end quality photogrammetry system (among the different photogrammetry systems possibilities) from my point of view. Also you are comparing the point cloud of the lidar post process vs the mesh of the photogrammetry postprocess, I don't know if drone deploy can postprocess the pointcloud but in pix4d, sometimes I see point cloud more accurate and sharp than the mesh. I really like this sector and I've been testing lidar vs photogrammetry sometimes trying to improve the photogrammetry weak points trying to reach the "easy to get" lidar quality.

    Agreed with regards to processing and Camera. If you want to compare surface (point cloud and mesh) products, you need to use local processing for SfM/MVS. I suggest using Metashape/Photoscan as their point cloud products are generally superior to pix4d. Also, general wisdom is to use a camera with a mechanical/global shutter for photogrammetry (So, X4S instead of X5S). Cool presentation overall, I like your enthusiasm!

  • @karooguy

    @karooguy

    3 жыл бұрын

    Seconded. Metashape or Pix4D is where it's at. Pix4D is more popular with industry, and more is more expensive but easy to use. Metashape is more popular with researchers and is also cheaper than Pix4D, but can be more complicated to use. I think it has more functionality than Pix4D though.

    Simple answer: Yes. Longer Answer: LiDAR only logs the reflective/intensity value of each return. You need an RGB data source to apply to the points. In most cases, you would also have a camera (RGB or some other passive sensor) logging while collection the LiDAR. He could have also used the images collected with the Inspire as well to overlay on the LiDAR once the images were processed.

    I would have like to know a little bit about what your data was being used to solve. I can’t help but think that 1cm (more like 3cm) is not accuracy enough for engineering a structure. It sounds great for land surveying but problematic for buildings. I would have like to have seen a few scans from a P50, overlay your area data for infill (removing the overlap) and apply the photo wrap. That way you would have 1-3mm precision great infill and color to boot. That said cost is always an issues. P50’s start at $5k to rent not to mention the software to extract and clean up the data. How big (data size) was this project in the end?

    Great video! However, You compared point cloud vs a 3D Mesh-Texture. I recommend doing another video showing the point cloud from the RGB camera instead of the texture. This way, you will compare apple vs apple. Thank you for the great work!

    Overall nice video! However that's a LiDAR point cloud vs a photogrammetry 3D mesh, so it's not a fair comparison. Would have been a better comparison if you compared the point clouds generated by each sets of data. I haven't used LiDAR myself, but I'm sure you could generate a 3D mesh from it as well.

    hi there im nathan and im from Trinidad and Tobago ..... so HI FROM TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO . I have some questions concerning the use of drones in land surveying . Im 18 years old and now about to start my degree in geomatics and im pretty new to the entire land surveying scene and my first questions is other than volumetric data collection and topographic map use can liDAR or even drone technology be used in cadastral and boundary surveying and can you (if possible ) talk about like a list of application for drones in surveying( liDAR or otherwise) and where can one go to learn and train to use drones for this field . I wanna learn drone surveying because in my country is 10 years back in technology and i would like to be one of the person to introduce this sort of technology Also(if possible) can u talk about what you do in general like overally as a job. So yh . And apart from the question i must commend you on the quality of your videos its truly top notch and i love it . I hope your channels grows to insane numbers because more ppl need to see this content its truly amazing

    Have you tried to integrate both data into a single 3D model? There are software that can process both data, to get the best of both worlds (3D constrain and precision from Lidar, and photographic texture from photogrammetry), and in fact, it can increase overall spatial resolution.

    I'm retired surveyor(about 40 years), ... I am not excited over the LIDAR(still costs too much), as much as I am over the photogrammetry(lot cheaper). How precise is the Photogrammetry, in the best and worst case, compared to the LIDAR ... how was the accuracy of each compared to the other? I might consider using photogrammetry for such things as cemeteries, since the headstones would be greatly benefitted with photos. Have you ever attempted recovery of old, worn, sandstone monuments' etchings(over 150 years/Civil War), with LIDAR?
