I think that pan up top was installed upside down. You want water running off, not into a trough. Also it's important to put stove cement around the joint at the stove. It's also a good idea to pack the space around the liner just above the stove with fireproof insulation to keep house air from going up inside the chimney.

Yep it was either smoke backup since the flange was too tall for the chimney cap, or put it the other way. I think depending on where you live and the weather is the key to this. In the PNW, not a lot of wind with that rain. I spoke to a professional that had been doing this for about 4 decades, and he said it wouldnt matter. (In WA) Now in a state like Texas, or mid west- where storms go sideways, might be a problem! But the rain coming straight down in WA with an overhang completely blocking this-- I chose to put it that way. Instead of backing up smoke into the house. Lesser of 2 evils. That's why the channel's tagline is "Good Enough"! lol

@@BBQandBolts I would have taken the abrasive disc to the flange. And/or use a taller cap. You're gonna see water coming down the liner and rust in your stove.

Great detailed install. I bought the same Drolet 1800 insert back in November and did the install myself. I did not remove the damper. I used an adjustable solid pipe. I plan to cut some of the damper away over the summer so I don’t have as many bends in it and connect the flex directly to the connector and into the stove. I also bought the half inch liner insulation and wrapped the entire liner down to the solid piece. It really helps retain the heat and keep the flue temp up and creosote buildup down. and also shoved Roxul insulation around the damper to keep from losing heat going up the chimney outside the liner. I have oil heat which is insanely expensive now (I pretty much primarily use this for heat 1400 sq foot rancher)It’s amazing. Used about 2.5 cords last year between end of November through march but had a fairly mild January and February here in Maryland. But this stove is VERY PICKY about dry wood. I try to only use 10% or less. Sorry for the long ass response haha. Happy burning 🔥

Good video, if I do this myself, I will definitely keep plenty of exhaust pipe and focus on the inside before going on top of the roof and getting the chimney cap in place.

Good work! Block off the chimney with appropriate insulation the sheet metal or aluminum right above the unit? Likely loosing "a lot" of heat up the chimney. Blocking off will cause the lower masonry to become an energy efficient heat sink perhaps gaining you 10-20% more efficiency.

Was one of my worries but not an issue.

That No Sag No Leak Top Plate that U modified was Good until U installed it upside down, The Liner needed to be Secured to the Top Plate and U didn’t use the Correct Cap on Top! Heavy Rains Will Surely be leaking into that House!!!

Too tall for the chimney cap I had. so it was smoke in the house or turn it upside down. The overhang was enough to where it didn't leak at all.

Great video. I'm about to install my liner. I've gotta do something similar to get my 5" liner to fit a little more snugly with my stainless Cloverleaf cap in my clay liner at the top. It's 8x12 so a bit sloppy if I don't do anything, glad it doesn't have to be secured down tight.

Wow....great step by step! We are looking into doing this ourselves too. Just went in last week and got a quote to have someone come out and do the work ($5,000+ which include the cost of an insert, liner and labor) so depending on the cost of a stove you find, expect to pay a couple thousand in labor if you aren't braving the task yourself. I'm a handy DIY'er but couldn't wrap my head around getting the liner through our existing damper. Your video is EXACTLY what I needed to see. No structural worries on removing brickwork around the damper opening? I saw in comments you said you didn't wire the blower inside the fireplace opening. What about cold make up air inlet for the new insert? Wondering if you did anything there to prevent the negative air or creating drat by using your air from inside the house? THANKS for taking the time to create,edit, and post the video to show others what you went through. New Subscriber 👍🏻

No, heat comes out the front. House was HOT! It heated really well even in the snow and ice.

It had a blower but the cord was on the outside. It was easy to conceal. They do not recommend putting cords inside the fireplace.

Why wouldn't you clamp the chimney liner to the cap at the top? In my area having the chimney liner wrapped in insulation/fireblanket, and sealed at both ends to the stove and the cap are required for code. I was told this is to prevent chimney fire/sparks/combustion inside the chimney between the liner and the inside walls of the existing chimney. Just curious, thanks for the detailed video.

@@jahmezis45 Every house is different: Some rooms have lower doors and exits that could block the heat. This particular home was a 1 story. Like I said, heat rises so that 2nd story will feel the benefit the most of your fire. Even if it's on the other side of the property. Just make sure you get a stove that is rated to heat the square footage of your home and you should be golden!

Do you have to sleeve it if your chimney has tile liner?

It took only about a month to get the 45 degree angle part, but I had to look around. Parts are getting harder to come by due to supply chain issues in 2021. So if the Stove doesn't fit and won't sit level with the rear feet off the stone, you would need to order a 45 degree angle for the up pipe. Then it will rest on all 4's. The year comment was saying I had finished the whole project a year ago but just edited it after we moved. Just way too busy with the move! Hope that explains your question.

There is going to be a pond in that top plate from rain that is blowing sideways and leaking into the liner and the inside of the chimney. I don’t know what chimney professional told you to do that with the top plate, but that’s not professional. He should’ve told you to put the top plate on correctly and tighten the clamp correctly so the new liner doesn’t sag over time and fail. He should’ve also told you to buy the correct size chimney cap that fits the whole chimney, or even a 6” round cap that fits directly over the round storm collar of the top plate so it will accommodate the liner top kit. Now the chimney has much bigger problems. The chimney professionals business should be mentioned in this video so nobody ever hires him/her again!

Unfortunately if I would have put it the other way it wouldnt have left enough room for the smoke to clear out on the cap then you get backup smoke in your house. I spoke with the professional beforehand and he suggested this. So far so good .

i like the idea.. but (most) wood builder fireplaces are NT rated for the extreme heat of an insert.... (reg fire burns WAY COOLER then that box gets...) has this been inspected by a fire code guy? or a chimney installer and given the "green light"? i'm considering but i dont want to kill mysef or my kiddos while sleeping.. and i have too many guns i dont want to melt either.....the gun safe wont survive a house fire!!! haha i'd prefer to cut a hole thru the dude of the house and rout e correct side wall pipe vs burning down my house... IDk... i'm from WV.. never tossed a stove into a house but i'm sure it cannot be hard... just the whole die in your sleep or kill your family kinda gets to me.

If you get an insert with a catalyst then the exhaust will be much cooler. Also, if you insulate your liner then it can be closer to combustibles. My chimney doesn't have a 2" gap from the framing in the attic so I'm going to install a liner with insulation.

I think your professional made a terrible mistake, that collar on top should be turned over. That’s gonna be a funnel, collects water and dump it down in your chimney.

That cap was over each part . I can see the worry but when installing it and after I had no worries that it would happen. And still don’t think it would. The cap protected it really well. Which you can’t really see in the Video maybe.

i would turn your new "chimney water collector" over -and install it the correct way - and loose the "expert" who gave you the advise phone number
