Not without lots of TLC. My boss (1990) had one...he bought it as a status symbol. It spent more time in the shop than on the road 😂 His beautiful 1983 Jeep SJ Wagoneer made plenty of appearances at work (the steakhouse he owned) because the Range Rover was a temperamental little beast. I'm sure that the hot, arid climate of West Texas didn't do it any favors...

12:18 That's a thing i am always wondering with car manufacturers of today: Back then the narrow pilars were weak, but with modern technology and modern materials they probably could build cars with the visibility of the past that are actually safe in crashes. But they don't, for whatever reason.

My mom had one of the original ones, it was something like #13 sold in North America. I learned to drive (in part) on this thing, and we used to drive all over Forest Service roads with it. It seemed like there was nothing it couldn't do off-road. My parents kept it and my dad kept trying to get it restored until he died in 2017 and it was given to a family friend. This is the most nostalgic possible vehicle for me.

This is a car you'd probably get from most kids if you asked them to paint an offroad truck. I really adore the simplicity, plenty of glass and tons of visibility of it. Very good looking outside spec, probably begs to get dirty but also looks so fine when clean. I like how most of the drive was silent, because this is how I would describe this car. Is there anything special about it? No. Is it a good car? Maybe. Is it a pleasure to drive? I don't know, maybe. Is it a pleasure to be around one? Absolutely. It's giving a vibe of that good friend with whom you can just relax & cruise around on Saturday night in complete silence and not feel awkward about it, just enjoying a relaxing time and each other's presence.

Ahhh, the old Buick Wildcat V8...well, British Leyland Roverized 😂 interesting tidbit, this engine and the Buick 3.8 V6 (which became the legendary, indestructible GM 3800) were developed at the same time, and shared many internal parts. GM sold the V8 to Rover, tooling and all, and the Fireball V6, tooling and all, to Kaiser-Willys (maker of the Jeeps before AMC). When AMC took over Jeep, they replaced the Fireball V6 with AMC straight 6's, and set the tooling aside. GM later bought it back, specifically for the 1978 Buick Regal, which turned out to be perfect timing, as we had a gas crisis in 1979! (I remember my sister and I pushing my dad's '79 Buick Regal through the gas line when it ran out of gas while we were waiting in line 😂). It went into several other GM G-body vehicles around the same time...

I've had an '01 Discovery for the past 18 years. Bought it in '06 with 50k miles on it when shopping for a VW TDI. I saw it and thought that's what I want. Pretty much the same chassis and running gear as this Range Rover with different body. Disco was the last LR model to use the old Rover pushrod V8 and solid axles. It's never left me stranded, always got me home.
