Driving over the NEW Gerald Desmond Bridge (before and after)

Фильм және анимация

On October 5, 2020, the replacement for the Gerald Desmond bridge opened to traffic in Long Beach, California. The new cable-stayed bridge is the first of it's kind in California. The new bridge has a vertical clearance of 205 feet, allowing for new, larger ships to access interior of the port of Long Beach. Construction on the new bridge began in 2013, and the old bridge will be demolished in 2021.
In this video, you will see a driver's perspective view of both the old and new bridges from both the westbound and eastbound journeys.
Thanks a lot for watching and feel free to subscribe!

    I used to drive the old Gerald Desmond bridge to work everyday for 5 years, love it and the Vincent Thomas, glad to see the major upgrade. I've heard that this is the only bridge in history to not need to raise funding before building, that the port itself paid for the majority of costs.

    I like the new grade, as the bridge is much longer, thus not as steep for the trucks to slowly climb the grade!

    This video shows old and new bridge. I use to drive over the old bridge daily when I was stationed on a destroyer at the Long Beach Naval Base which is now part of the container port. New bridge gives Long Beach a modern look. Sorry that none of the LB naval base or shipyard buildings survived. The only area that look relatively the same is the Navy Mole area which still has fuel piers and Military Sealift Command piers. PS - The only remaining of the shipyard is Titan, aka Herman the German (US Navy YD-171), which is a large floating crane. It was sold and is working in the Panama Canal.

    Why didn’t state route 47 intersect the 10 freeway next to alameda street in downtown Los Angeles. I would like the 47 freeway to get extended further north intersecting and for there to be an interchange with the 105 in Lynwood and then have the 47 continue north ending it in Boyle heights interstate 10 .

    Seven years and 1.5 Billion Dollars to add a few lanes and raise a bridge 50 feet over an inlet from an island? Partially explains why California taxes are so high. Though hooray for construction/materials workers and employment.

  • @TheFourFoot

    The vast majority of funding for this bridge came from the federal government ($675m), but yes, large infrastructure projects like provide direct benefits to workers and businesses in the local area.

    This isn’t just a normal bridge. It takes a lot more, putting work into the bridge. Especially in a earthquake prone area

  • @TheFourFoot

    @TheFourFoot

    3 жыл бұрын

    @Rabbi Shekelwitz the Federal government provided $675m in direct funding and $500m in loans. The next largest contributor was Caltrans, which provided $153.7m in direct funding. I meant that the largest contributor was the federal government, but I was also not wrong when I said that the majority of the funding (78%) was contributed by the federal government. Federal loans are very low interest and yes, that $500m will be repayed by California taxpayers, but as California is a net federal tax donor, rather than recipient, it’s not entirely truthful to say that this bridge is an example of why taxes are high in California. If the federal tax system were equitable to states, a lot more infrastructure would be built in California.
