Driving in England as an American tourist - Travel Vlog Day #35

We are an American married couple, traveling the world (60+ countries) for 1 year on $50/day each. Subscribe :)
Driving in England was Peter's first time driving internationally.
(Well, besides driving in Canada that is- but those are some wide open roads!)
We decided renting a car was the best way for us to tour the U.K. Public transportation would've added up fast and limited the places we could get to on our schedule.
But that meant Peter had to get used to driving on the left, shifting with his left hand, round abouts and the narrow roads!
Our Chase Sapphire Preferred card has full primary coverage on rental cars in all countries: www.referyourchasecard.com/6/...

    Simon Pinney a road sign which is a white disc with a black diagonal line indicates speed limit as well as round red rimmed signs with a number in. The white disc and diagonal line means "national speed limit" which for a car on a single carriageway road meaning one lane each way is 60mph even when the road is really narrow. The same sign on a dual carriageway which is 2 or more lanes in each direction and what you call a median in the middle is 70mph.

    Not quite. Lack of signage also applies in a built up area designated by a system of street lighting. In this case the speed limit defaults to 30 mph and it's illegal to install 30mph signs. Crazy. www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2016/362/schedule/10/made Part 4 Section 2.

    I find it astounding that you found auto windscreen wipers are amazing! Thats been amongst basic equipment on european cars for at least the last 10 years or so! That being said, the price of cars here is much higher that the US. Forgive us our often poor road system, it is masively under invested outside London. That being said, the UK is a much smaller country so things are inevitably compressed. The overwhelming impression a Brit has when visiting the US for the first time is the SPACE! I found it incredible that Americans talk about driving 100's of miles to visit friends and neighbors like it was a normal thing! Over here, driving anything over 50 or so miles is considered a major inconvenience, and expense!

    Auto windscreen wipers -Right!?! Total game changer! We LOVED these and haven't seen them since in any of the other cars we've driven in Europe, Africa or Asia - only the car we had in England. I'm hoping we can find this feature in whatever car we end up buying once we return Stateside. Brick First oh wow! I figured that some cars in the US must have them, I just had never seen or heard of it until we had drove the rental car in the U.K.! We both had really old cars we just sold before our 1 year world trip (1999 and 2001) But we had also rented new cars in the States several times and never come across it. I like them though and hope whatever car we buy after our world trip will have automatic wipers! Do you happen to remember what kind of car it was that you rented in LA? And driving through LA- WOW! That's an experience! Talk about traffic!!!

  • @brickfirst2604

    @brickfirst2604

    Happy Hoppe - it was a Mercedes, which yes, is a rather up-market European brand, but thinking about it, about 4 years ago, I hired a Nissan at Houston airport - pretty sure that had auto wipers too. Driving in LA was a breeze, but you had to plan carefully to avoid the commuting times. I have been fortunate (?) enough to drive in a few foreign countries but by far the most stressful experience was driving in Dallas. On the freeways, the exit slips (off ramps ?) could be on either the left or the right and the sign posts gave you very short notice - which meant having to cross up to 4 lanes of traffic at the very last moment. Not only that, but the good people of Dallas all drive fast. Very fast. It is not for the feint hearted!

  • @turboslag

    That explains why the cars you used in the US had auto wipers, they were imports! It would be interesting to find out if any US domestic produced cars have them. Came across your video by random and started watching. Was suprised when you arrived in Woodley. It was a town I grew up in and lived in until I was 18. The narrow road at the end, called Sandford Lane, is around the corner from my parents home. Sandford Lane was notorious for vehicle crashes, expecially during the night. It was often used as an illegal race track at night with people trying to get from one end to the other in the shortest time possible.

  • @HappyHoppe

    @HappyHoppe

    6 жыл бұрын

    Oh my goodness- that's too funny! I'm sure that was strange for you to be like "wait, I recognize that road!" I'm also glad you said it was notorious for crashes - that makes me feel like "yeah, see it IS a narrow road" when so many comments are like "are you kidding, that's such a wide road!" 😂 Or maybe the crashes were more because of the racers? 🤔🤷‍♀️ And we just need to get used to driving on narrow roads to drive in England successfully! 😆

  • @LordTopley

    @LordTopley

    Happy Hoppe Its absolutely took me by surprise seeing that road in your video. Its a fairly narrow road, but in UK terms of narrow roads, it's wide. We certainly have more challenging roads in the very rural areas. If you haven't already and if you visit England again, try driving in the County of Cornwall, that has some very "fun" narrow roads to enjoy. And yes, most of those crashes were because of the racers ☹️

    If you think a straightforward roundabout like that is confusing take a look at Swindon's "Magic Roundabout". Even that is not confusing if you tackle it sensibly. That was a thunderstorm. Even though we are meant to be metric, we use miles and yards for distance and speed, and feet and inches to measure your height. Go the swimming baths and depth will be in metres. The building yards will accept both, but we mainly use the imperial system for most things and metric for the odd stuff. Blame the EU for that.

    Our "roads" started as footpaths, used by traders walking between villages trading, then widened when they added a donkey and cart to move their goods. Later Romans arrived to build multiple lane roads to move troops and goods at speed. All long before the Americas had need of a road, only after the Spanish invaded did things start to change. The arrival of the wagon pulled by horses started the creation or need for roads. The coming of the car and the vast space available allowed the big big roads then traffic jams that rapidly filled them, until everything ground to a halt in massive traffic jams.
