Driving in Austria 6: Ötztal valley (Oetz - Sölden - Obergurgl) 4K 60fps
The Ötztal is an alpine valley located in Tyrol, Austria. The Ötztaler Ache river flows through the valley in a northern direction. The Ötztal separates the Stubai Alps in the east from the Ötztal Alps in the west. The valley is 65 km (40 mi) long. The southern end of the valley, also called the Gurglertal, terminates at the border with Italy. The Ötztal consists of five municipalities (from north to south): Sautens, Oetz, Umhausen, Längenfeld, and Sölden. The main industry in the valley is tourism. The mountains around the valley are popular with both mountaineers and skiers. There are ski resorts in the upper part of the valley at Sölden, Hochsölden, and Hochgurgl. The Timmelsjoch mountain pass connects the Ötztal with the Passeier Valley and Merano in the province of South Tyrol, Italy.

Years ago I skiied at Hochsoelden and later that winter at St Johann. I was a beginner and a skinny 12 and the T-bar lifted me up into the air and dumped me in soft snow where my Dad had to come and get me out! Those were wonderful adventures. I went to a Gymnasium in Vienna and (as an American) picked up some Wienerisch. Years later when I again skiied in St Johann and got injured that stood me in good stead as I could laugh with the Tyrolean man in the same room who had fallen off a roof while shoveling it! Great memories, thanks!

Years ago I wanted to reach Obergurgl by foot (from where for me the journey in the mountains began). I estimated that I would need at least one day. I changed my mind and now I see what the road looks like. It is ok if you make it by car, but many portions of the road are clearly not for pedestrians (and at that time, I am not so sure that there was much for cyclists and pedestrians; probably less than today. So it would not have been very convenient). Beautiful landscape.

How good to see another one of these. Fascinating the different shades on the mountains in the distance there at2:05. And once past Oetz at about5:15it's just breathtaking.
A great road, done it a few times, a very varied alpine drive, love both the alpine meadows in Ötztal and the alpine views as you climb towards Timmelsjoch. Also in winter the road is very beautiful up to Obergurgl. Thanks for sharing it, a pleasure to admire this road, relaxed, on my couch. Greetings from a fellow creator from Germany!

Just right on time; a week and Ötztaler Radmarathon from Sölden! Been at Ötztal around ten times, but still this journey made me wanting to go there again.. :) Some changes, but mostly looked the same after my last visit a few Years ago. Nice drive, as usual! :D

Ive read about this cycle marathon. 240km, 5500 altitude meters, in 7 hours? ... on a bike? ... that's mental! :)

@@7ze3 Yes! Totally bonkers! Done it three times, but several hours slower.. :D One excellent thing in that race is; closed roads from cars! Can go down hill sections as fast as one dare, 96km/h my record, but even then got passed from left and right! Sick!

@@jhcycling3098 Awesome, that's a pretty tough one! Way too hard for me. I was in Längenfeld just one week before the Radmarathon and it's also a great place to go hiking.If you wanna take a look to the left and right of the street, check out my recent video about the Ötztal (kzread.info/dash/bejne/nnWryZSteK24Z7A.html). If I were a bit younger and less risk avoiding I would love to check out the downhill routes in Sölden. That looks like amazing fun as well!
