Driving in Arctic (West Warwick) Rhode Island

Poor Arctic, it used to be a great little town. Now a lot of boarded up store fronts. Finally we end up in Anthony (Coventry) Rhode Island.

I grew up in WW as well (went to Horgan and Deering) before moving here to NC in 83. It was certainly nice to tag along on the drive.

I moved from Coventry in 1965. I was a teen at the time. My Grandmother used to call Arctic Jericho. I'm guessing in the olden days everyone called it Jericho. I'm wondering at the fork in the road where the Gazebo with the green roof, used to be the Majestic Hardware? I remember Newberry, Maxines (my Mom shopped there), Sears and Roebuck, The theater I think the name was The Palace, Lucky's or Lucky Seven toy store, a few bars and restaurants, and that's about all I can remember. Oh, and the church at the end of the ride is where I went to church, good old Quidnick Baptist. Thanks so much for posting this video, it sure did bring back a lot of memories. BTW I have been living in Florida for all this time since 1965. THANKS!!

Arctic started to become the dump it is now, almost immediately after the malls went up, in the late 60s and early 70s. This was a happening place before that, with a busy retail district that actually included a Sears store, which then moved to the mall. Other stores like Newberry's closed and remain boarded up due to their proximity to the malls and Route 2. Downtowns like this are wasted now because they are no longer the "centers" they once were, but rather now just a suburb of Providence.

Yes - at the very end of the film, when I turn onto Fairview Ave., you can see the Quidnick Baptist Church next to the Anthony Fire Station on the right. The red building, opposite the fire station (really it is tan, but does look red), was a small convenience store (Loretta's I think) in the 60s and 70s. But the road was widened sometime back then and a building was torn down on the opposite corner in front of the tan building which is Greenway Cycles. The torn down store could have been the convenience store.

Oh man. At the 4:16 mark, I think that right end of the gray building used to be a bar. I can remember going in there with my grandparents and they'd buy me a bag of cashews and a soft drink.

To the people that film these driving videos, which I really enjoy: Why not wait for a clear or sunny day where you don't have to put the wipers on, and will have better visibility? Also, when stopped at a red light for an extended period of time, why not edit out the time not moving? It gets boring staring at stopped traffic, although we have to when we're on the road for real.
