The name "Milwaukee" comes from the Algonquian word millioke, meaning "good", "beautiful", and "pleasant land".
Milwaukee traces its roots back to the early 19th century when it was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Menominee, Potawatomi, and Ojibwe. The region's strategic location at the confluence of the Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic Rivers attracted European explorers and fur traders.
The official founding of Milwaukee dates back to 1846, when Solomon Juneau, Byron Kilbourn, and George H. Walker established the Town of Juneau, which would later become the city we know today. The completion of the Erie Canal and the subsequent influx of settlers from the eastern United States contributed to the city's rapid growth.
Milwaukee's location on Lake Michigan and its access to water transportation played a crucial role in its development as a major industrial hub. The city became known for its breweries, earning it the nickname 'Brew City.' Iconic breweries such as Miller, Pabst, and Schlitz emerged, shaping Milwaukee's identity and making it a leading producer of beer.
As Milwaukee flourished, it experienced significant waves of immigration, particularly from Germany and Poland, which greatly influenced the city's culture, architecture, and traditions. The city's diverse population added to its vibrant character, fostering a rich tapestry of festivals, music, and culinary delights.
Today, Milwaukee stands as a dynamic metropolis that seamlessly blends its industrial past with a modern and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Its stunning lakefront, thriving arts scene, sports teams, and renowned festivals like Summerfest make it a destination brimming with cultural offerings and entertainment.
As of the census of 2020, the population was 577,222.
Ethnically, the population was 20.1% Hispanic or Latino of any race. When grouping both Hispanic and non-Hispanic people together by race, the city was 38.6% Black or African American, 36.1% White, 5.2% Asian, 0.9% Native American, 9.0% from other races, and 10.1% from two or more races.
The median income for a household in the city was $43,125, and the per capita income for the city was $24,167. About 24.6% of the population were below the poverty line,

I am from Seattle which has likely the most beautiful setting of any city in America but architecturally we can't hold a candle to Milwaukie. The number of beautifully preserved antique buildings is amazing. I think block per block this may be the most beautiful city in America. I am really surprised! All those incredible old mansions and I was stunned to actually see hills there.
Love Milwaukee, a great place on a great lake!!!
I lived in Milwaukee my whole life great place to live. Summers are sooooo much fun! This video was filmed beautifully Great job!
Donald Trump says it's a horrible city.
It looks like a very nice city - clean, prosperous and well-maintained...
Can't wait til I move out there next year
You couldn't drive like that on Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane roads, it would be stop/start, stop/start -- even on a Sunday ❗
What a great city to visit so much to do.
I'd like to offer everyone here a cold beer 🍺
Thanks for the video.
Great and nice building in the center
For anyone wondering, the bird sounds are almost definitely not added in. They're so loud in the summer.
