Driving a shetland trandem ( 3 abreast) - carriage driving.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Abbey, Codie and Sunrise working as a trandem. This was the first time these 2 chestnut mares had been in harness; Codie (the piebald gelding) was broken by us last year and already drives as a single and in multiple turnouts.

    Just got home from the barn and was in a really bad mood because i injured my back a week ago at home, and daily horsecare is difficult to do right now. But Ooooh that quick-paced clippetyclopp of tiny hooves and those 3 tiny fluffy shetland bums at the start of the video made my day !!! Thank you! ❤😂😂😂😂😂

    I have what may be a silly question. How do you protect their hooves while they work on the pavement? Most driving horses have shoes but I didn't think anyone made shoes small enough for small ponies/miniatures. Is it ever an issue that their feet get too much wear and tear?

  • @beverley232

    @beverley232

    You can shoe shetlands just fine, its not a problem getting shoes small enough. Even donkeys can be shod.

  • @amazing7633

    @amazing7633

    Depending upon the amount of work they are doing and the surface they will be on, you can often do better by leaving them barefoot. They need regular trimming, of course, by a farrier who knows how to trim for barefoot work. Also, for the really tiny ones the farrier needs to be somewhat short or else able to work sitting down.

  • @Sine-gl9ly

    A farrier should be able to hand-make shoes small enough for a tiny, even if they can't be bought small enough. The problem then arises of getting nails that are proportionate in size, and of the farrier having enough skill, patience and feel to get those nails to hold the shoe securely without going too near the quick. For many years I had a wonderful farrier who shod my mini-shetlands and a 10-hand donkey two or three times every summer, when I drove them enough to make it necessary. However, they weren't shod behind as he wasn't happy doing so - he did so once, but after the first two nails, felt he needed a size even smaller which weren't, at the time, available, so took them off again. The donkey used to wear his front shoes wafer-thin with road work, the Shetlands were more balanced, front to back, but none of them ever became sore behind, even if they did wear their hind feet pretty well. I was living in hilly country at the time and often used what we call 'white roads' and byways, many of which, in that area, had a limestone or gritstone cobbled surface. Working on tarmac was, in comparison, easy on their hooves! Perhaps nowadays there'd be a synthetic, possibly glue-on, alternative available ...
