Once you get driving manual down it's so much fun to drive. I go out of my way to get manual vehicles in the US because it makes driving so much more interesting and enjoyable!

I really agree - it's like you have "power" over the car and not the other way round. And then you also have to understand when the car's motor wants you to change gear or retrograde. I do agree, however, in city traffic a manual is trying your patience and spoiling your fun, but on open country roads, with plenty of corners, it's testing your driving skills !

The secret is mastering the clutch. Plus, getting started from a stop going uphill can be a bit unnerving. Once you master those, it's easy peasy. And driving a manual can be lots of fun.

Yes there is the handbrake, but being able to balance the clutch and the accelerator is satisfying. However, I do leave a lot a space between the car in front of mine - not everyone can do this !!!!

Clutch control is called "the bite" mastering the bite is essential for a lot of 1st gear requirements, especially hill starts, or being stuck in a traffic jam on a hill. The bite is the balance between gas and clutch to keep the car stationary without stalling.
Ah yes. I will always remember the first time I ever drove a standard transmission. I had gone to visit an old friend of mine in the city where he lived, and we were just driving around catching up on life events. For some reason, I don't remember why, we got pulled over by the police. Turns out my friend, the driver, had a warrant out for his arrest so they cuffed him and took him in. Now, I had to figure out how to drive stick, in city traffic, in a city I only sort of knew, to get to my friends parents house, in order to inform them that their son had just been arrested. Ah memories. 🤣🤣🤣

I've been driving manuals since 1978 and absolutely love them, but my interest in them goes all the way back to when I was a kid. Our next door neighbors had a Chevy with a 3-speed column shift, and on one occasion I rode with them and watched the missus shift gears. That was the coolest thing. I badgered my father about why we can't have a car like that, but he wouldn't hear of it. He was buying automatics by then. I had my first lesson on a stick when I was 17. A lady whom we knew agreed to let me practice on her VW Beetle. I didn't do too badly, but did pop the clutch and stalled the engine on an uphill incline. She was very patient with me. Years later, I met her daughter whom I remembered as a baby, and told her the story
Haha! So glad we drive manual in the UK 😂 you did very well x
I learned a few years ago and let me tell you it scared the hell out of me at first
Just a pointer , the person teaching you said press clutch then brake to stop. DO NOT do this , its known as coasting and causes damage to the brake discs because you aren’t letting the car engine brake. Always brake then clutch to come to a stop.
@thedragonbrawler9311

That's when slowing down from driving at faster speeds. She's driving slow enough where pressing the clutch down first is negligible at worst and correct at best.

I'll pass the manual license soon but I was stressing for her watching this video because it's just like watching someone who never drove a car before, she was looking constantly at the stick and the pedals and not paying attention to the road I understand how difficult it is the first time and even, the first MONTH of driving because there are 6 gears and you constantly have to shift the 1-2-3 to 3-2-1 in town and the 6th gear in the highways, the braking and emergency brake process also seems to be complicated for the beginners, they mostly stall the engine
After all that worry you deserve a round of applause for a job well done.Enjoy every moment in this journey, if possible visit the other old European countries.

Not everyone learns the same way so I feel that was the right method for this situation 🙂 and she successfully did it twice!
Someone escaped from the circus.
My first job in high school was a car dealer service helper. I had to wash vacuum and park the cars. Let's just say that was not a fun time when the mechanics dumped a stick car at my bay. But basically you just need to feel where the bite is when lifting the clutch. Know to look for that and make it a muscle memory for your left foot. I was then able to drive everything from a stick compact / sedan to a full blown pickup. A lot of fun!
You did really good learning to drive especially considering how random the instruction was ; D
Reminds me to when my car was in the shop and got a rental... a manual too. It was facing the walls so i had to reverse. For some damn reason i couldn't get that in, so yeah. Just called my work and took a week off. Fucking manuals.
In France it's easier because everyone drives on the right side. In England there is left-hand traffic and the driver sits on the wrong side.

Great Video. Luckly, you didn't try to learn to drive a manual in England because you would have been shifting with your left hand which is a lot harder for us that are use to sitting on the left side of the car, Keep up the good work.
Oh boy...about manuals. What's trippy still for me, because my clunky old car is a stick shift, it kinda messes up your mind when you go back to using an automatic. Occasionally like my left foot, when driving a regular car, will just shift a bit by itself, like it's searching for a clutch pedal that isn't there. Oh and the wonders of trying to parallel park on a steep hill. 😬

There is good trick to avoid stalling the car: rev up to about 2000 RPM (slowly not too fast) and then release the clutch gently. This way you will avoid stalling by going too slow. It may be different from car to car but in general this works. But remember to release the clutch slowly and not to fast. Otherwise the car will shoot forward.
@aphextwin5712

My advice is to start off by practicing to get the car rolling without using the gas pedal. This will give you a good feel for the clutch pedal*. Once you’ve mastered this, adding a bit of gas just makes things easier. Obviously this only really works on level ground (and doesn’t work with really old cars, I think you need fuel injection, which was a standard by about the mid 1990s). *And this can even be useful for experienced people when getting into a new-to-them car because the clutch can feel different depending on the car.

FIAT 500 definitely is not a basic car, despite being compact (European B-class, or class-mini), that is expensive retro style car, basic for example is FIAT Panda. FIAT 500 costs almost as much as to FIAT Pandas, both manual transmission and both mini-class. But as a student great learning abilities get it really fast, maybe because FIAT 500 gearbox is highly reliable for newbies (haven't driven it ever), but great!
Yes, it is the standard in Europa
In Europe this basically couldnt happen I think :D You get your license by driving in the car that belongs to the driving school both during the lessons and the final test. It will always be manual as standard, only if you were to apply for a drivers license thats for automatic only, would your lessons be in an automatic car. So here you either were taught manual in the driving school or you cannot legally drive manual unless you take additional courses and upgrade your license. If you were caught driving a manual car with an "automatic only" drivers license, its like not having a license ..
