Driver's Eye View - Kent & East Sussex Railway - Tenterden to Bodiam - 4K

The railway you see today at 10½ miles in length is a fine example of one of England’s light railways and originally part of a larger system which operated between Headcorn and Robertsbridge. The K&ESR was the very first ‘light railway’ to be constructed. A light railway is equipped to cater for full size trains, to keep construction costs low they tend to follow the contour of the land, thus minimising the need for extensive earthworks, tunnels, bridges and viaducts; as a result gradients can be steep, level crossings frequent and operating speeds are low, often less than 25mph.
Passenger trains ran on the original line from 1900 until 1954. In 1974 the first trains ran in preservation on a short section of line heralding the first stage in an ambitious plan to reopen the line to Bodiam, home of the world famous Bodiam Castle. This line was one of many operated by Colonel Stephens, who kept these lines running through a series of cost saving measures, often using second hand locomotives, ancient rolling stock and novel railcars. As a result, railway lines, locomotives and rolling stock that might otherwise have been consigned to history are still with us today.     I really enjoyed this unique perspective on railroading. The English countryside is really scenic and relaxing. It's awesome to see they have preserved this for future generations to enjoy.     Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride. This railway had been lifted and consigned to history until a group of determined volunteers got together to set about rebuilding the line we enjoy today. It's a real working museum, we owe our gratitude to those early pioneers and all the people who make the railway the awesome experience it is today.

    Like most of the preserved lines in Britain, the K & ESR only have a very few paid staff (many in essential admin posts); the great majority of those working there are unpaid volunteers.

    Hello Barry, we are lucky here in the UK to have so many wonderful heritage railways, they are all different in character, this one was part of a ramshackle empire of light railways kept going well past their sell by dates by the charismatic Colonel Stephens, using a fascinating mixture of second hand locomotives and rolling stock, along with support from local communities and I dare say a bit of creative accounting. The enthusiast railways of the UK owe a lot to Colonel Stephens, he was responsible for keeping railway alive long enough for the infant preservation movement to step in and save them. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._F._Stephens

    This was a lovely journey through the picturesque countryside of England. I thoroughly enjoyed the sound of the steam loco, the signs that said whistle in crucial spots, the gates that open and close the tracks. Takes me back in time. 🛤👍🤗

    Hello Larissa, I'm pleased you enjoyed riding this train through the pretty rural Kent countryside. The operation of the railway is fascinating, because unlike a mainline railway this line was constructed to be operated as a light railway with far less onerous safety requirements, hence why you see the train staff operating some of the railway gates.     Thanks for showing the L M R locomotive. Brings back memories of being Stationed at Bordon Camp , training to be a Mechanic. I would be able to see Tank locomotives , while training on Centurion Tanks 🚂. Happy days , 1961.

    I used to ride my push bike from Chichester to the Longmoor Military camp in the hope of one day seeing a train, I never did, but I remember looking through holes in the engine shed to see David Shepard's "Black Prince" next to the LMR locomotive "Gordon", now at the Severn Valley Railway, I seem to remember an odd looking engine on a length of track outside some official looking buildings, I believe it carried a name like "Gazelle". Years later I saw a lot of "Green Goddess" fire engines inside one of the buildings. The nearest I got to seeing a train moving was watching "the St Trinians Train Robbery" happy days indeed.

    Hello Peter, as always, it's nice to hear from you, the K&ESR is a lovely railway, no spectacular scenery, just pretty Kent and East Sussex countryside. Glad to hear Puff is working, even on a cold day Oz is a usually lot warmer than the UK. I hope you enjoy your trip to Fiji, RTC have confirmed that my "Alpine Steam Express" trip to Switzerland is going ahead, not so sure about the "Steam in Wolsztyn and North Western Poland" trip, a lot will depend on the situation in Ukraine, although it would be nice to think that the Ukrainian conflict will be resolved by then.     Hello, I'm pleased to have jogged your memory, you must have witnessed some of the events that led to this delightful railway coming back to life. When the railway magazines (no internet back then) reported the next section to open, I'd visit with my camera to record the occasion, just one more section to go and the railway will once more be connected to the national network. I hope you enjoy visiting again, it is still one of the most welcoming and friendly railways I visit, maybe the fireman will stand aside to let you shovel coal into the firebox for old time’s sake.

    @@Timsvideochannel1 - yes, when I first visited (before volunteering) the line only went just west of Wittersham Road Station, and by the time I left, it had reached Bodiam. It's been a long time - and a *huge* amount of work by the KESR / RVR planning teams to get the Transport Works Order approved - but I really am looking forward to being able to do the full line trip one day. Re. picking up the shovel again; maybe a few shovelsful, but sadly not much more. I was gassed with a nasty chemical called Phosgene when I was 19, which did permanent lung damage. It was very insidious for quite a few decades, but over the last 7 - 8 years, it's got very much worse; if I was a steam loco, my repair card would be marked "Permanently short of steam - needs a new boiler!"

    @@jackx4311 Hello Jack, people like me owe a great deal to people like you and the rest of the volunteers who work hard to give us the wonderful heritage railway scene we have today. I'm sorry to read that you require a new boiler, life can seem a bit unfair at times, I'm past retirement age, but still working for now, hopefully I've a few years left on my boiler certificate, although when I look in the mirror, I'm reminded that I'm no spring chicken anymore. I hope we both get to see the K&ESR connected to the national network 😊.

    awww. what a fantastic presentation Tim. A real favourite for me. I have visited twice many moons ago before Bodium. we walked the track etc etc. It's the most vintage railway one could wish to see. The Bluebell is next. For me anyway. This video brought back so many memories. I'll never get to see it again except when you upload the return journey.. Big thank you😂🤣😃😄😁😀

    Hello Keith, it's nice to hear from you, I enjoyed the trip and commentary on your recent trip with Paul. I was visiting the K&ESR on one of their behind the scenes tours where you get to see what it takes to run a railway, it was a really good day out and I was fortunate that the driver allowed me to fix a camera to his engine. I've followed the rebirth of the line almost from the first trains in preservation back in the mid 70's and I have to say it has matured into a first class tourist attraction, especially with the added bonus of Bodiam Castle to visit, there is optimistic talk of trains once again serving Robertsbridge in the not too distant future, this line really captures the essence of a Colonel Stephens Railway. My favourite Bluebell Railway event is their Model Railway Weekend, always a good show. Take care and stay safe. Tim 😊.

    That was great, Tim, and more interesting than I expected. There's still a lot of railway infrastructure there, and the countryside of course is delightful. My only knowledge of the railway before was seeing a train in the distance on a visit to the castle, and driving over one of the level crossings.

    Hi Jim, my eldest daughter used to ride horses for a stable yard behind the castle, at certain times of the year the fields would be bright yellow, this along with the castle and trains in the background enabled me to take some striking photographs. For me the most interesting part of a visit to this line is the way it is operated as a true light railway.

    That's a nice little ride which was fun to watch. Thanks. I also liked the way you incorporated the "01" in the landscape at the start as though it was part of the channel name. Editing to add, the gates take me back to my younger days when there were gates near the railway station in my town, but they were only opened on "show" days so that people could more easily get to the football (Aussie Rules) park where the show used to be held. The show has since been moved to a race track on the edge of town and the old gates have been removed and a permanent fence has replaced them. It's safer that way since there are around 4 tracks to cross and one is used 6 times per day. The other tracks are shunting tracks.

    Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed the ride. The "01" or 10 mph speed limit sign from the other side fitted in nicely, I didn't notice it until I watched the video after editing it. As a kid, the railway gates near my home were operated by a signalman in the nearby signal box using a large wheel, today the signal box has gone and the road is protected by modern barrier gates. It's nice to see these little bits of the past preserved on railways such as this one.

    A lovely railway, I remember it from my Tenterden fruit picking days in the late 60’s when the line was derelict. We bused it to Bodiam, walked up to the pub, then down the fields onto the line for a bit. Happy days. I even remember Anika Rice doing a challenge in restoring the station building at Northiam. Well recommended trip especially the food evenings onboard.

    Hi, it's changed a bit since the sixties, yet the area still retains an olde worlde atmosphere. The cray fish ponds are abandoned and many of the fruit trees and Hop fields have disappeared, some have been replace with vines, most importantly the countryside has not disappeared under yet more new housing as is happening in many places along the South Coast. I remember that "Challenge Anika" episode. A walk around Tenterden Town, a ride behind a steam train, followed by a visit to Bodiam Castle and maybe even a steam boat ride, it's hard to think of a better way to spend a day. I first visited the line in 1975, since then I have enjoyed watching the line reopen to Bodiam.

    I'm glad you enjoy these videos. Are you referring to getting a GoPro camera? They are fun and allow you to obtain video from places where it would be difficult with a regular camcorder or mobile phone.

    Hello Rodney, I wish I had a garden railway, I love gardening and I love railways, just haven't got around to combining the two yet, maybe one day. I may be biased, but I think Britain has the best heritage railway scene to be found anywhere in the world, the one good thing to result from the axe Dr Beeching took to Britain's railways was the plethora of picturesque branch lines available for enthusiast to rescue, coupled to Dai Woodhams scrap yard deciding to wait for the price of steel to rise before cutting up locomotives, resulting in over 100 steam locomotives being available to restore. You grew up next to a very interesting main line, bet you've got some wonderful memories from those far off days. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video. Seasons Greetings. Tim.

    Hello Daniel, glad you enjoyed it, I'm really looking forward to the line joining up with the national network at Robertsbridge in the not too distant future. With Covid restrictions being lifted, I'll hopefully be able to resume shooting more forward facing railway videos around Europe, my first trip for well over 2 years is due to take place in July, in the meantime I'll be visiting a few more UK heritage railways 😊.

    @@Timsvideochannel1, Hoping that gets 100% go ahead as at the moment its not yet confirmed and still waiting as there is currently a hearing in session to decide this, fingers cross its all positive and happens, but yeah guess we will have to see. Be amazing, but yeah. Yeah will love that, do you get permission on the day for that or in advance with railway to mount a camera? Might consider making one on the channel? Oki doki, about July trip look forward to seeing what videos will be posted if posted? Yeah, hopefully be doing the same. Spa Valley Railway have a few events on this year, RHDR aswell and a few others. Have you ever visited East Kent Railway?

    @@DJSOfficialUK Hi, I looked at some of your videos, I get the impression the K&ESR is local to you from the number of videos featuring the line. It's been a while since I spent time in the area visiting the railways you mention, I'll have to make a point of staying for longer sometime this year. I was visiting the line on one of their "behind the scenes tours" and our guide was optimistic about restoring services to Robertsbridge saying that most of the hurdles had been overcome, just one or two to sort out, including purchasing a stretch of track-bed currently in private hands. I would certainly consider asking the operating department at the line if they would allow me to mount a camera to record the reopening of the line to Robertsbridge, although I would guess they will be making their own video to celebrate the occasion. They are a really nice bunch of people at the K&ESR, I look forward to visiting again.

    Hi, it's better to be spoiled for choice than being offered a limited choice. The UK is probably the best country in the world for heritage railways, most of them easily accessible by rail and other forms of public transport.     Hello Martin, I'm pleased you enjoyed the video. Single track lines here in the UK are usually lightly used branch lines that offer something different, they are usually friendly and the trains are often more interesting because they use old stock that has gone from the rest of the network.

    I was fifteen when our english teacher took us on a bicycle trip to the yuoth hostels in Kent and Sussex. I remember cycling through Tenterden, Canterbury, Faversham , and yes we must have gotten to London ! In 1959 it was.

    Hi, nice memories to have. This part of the UK has remained relatively unchanged since your visit in 1959, you can't say that for most places in the UK today. I don’t think a modern day teacher would allowed to take a group of children on such a wonderful adventure?

    Seems like only yesterday (2002-2006) that I stood at each of those stations except Rolvenden, taking videos that remain treasured possessions - BR black Terrier at Northiam and Wittersham Road, where it crossed the USA tank in WD grey; and the same Austerity seen here, arriving and running round at Bodiam and, on another occasion, departing Tenterden Town filmed from that fenced stretch between the platform and and the crossing. And, of course, the limitless thrills of actually travelling the line, on one occasion in the vintage consist. Happy days which began twenty years ago this month.

    Hello Geoff, nice memories to have, time flies. I have visited the line on a number of occasions since it first opened, today it has matured into a wonderful heritage railway offering us the chance to enjoy one of the lines Colonel Stephens kept open just long enough for the heritage movement to be able to take over.     Hi, it's one of my favourite railways too. I did see the Norwegian locomotive on this visit, but I don't think it will be back on the line for a while, it was complete, I don't think it's overhaul has started yet.

    Hello Josef, it's nice to hear from Germany, I'm pleased you enjoyed the video, Kent and East Sussex are pretty county with picturesque villages and a fascinating railway heritage such as this railway, constructed and operated as a light railway throughout its life. Kent is often referred to as the Garden of England, know for growing hops and apples. Sound is always a problem, if I mount the camera on a handrail or lamp iron wind noise can be a problem, if it is mounted inside the cab, some drivers ask for the sound to be removed, although here in the UK we are fortunate to have a good number of train drivers shooting and uploading videos, they nearly always leave the original sound in.

    Hi, at the moment I work when I'm awake. The Covid Pandemic hit me hard, I had very little work for a year or more as my customers stopped developing new products (my lifeline). After a long break people are investing in new products again and I'm pretty well the last man standing in my part of the world, we are all getting older and there a no youngsters coming into plastic injection mould making. I'm glad to be busy again, although work does get in the way of having fun 😊.

    Lovely video, a reminder of when we lived in Peasmarsh 20 years ago, and regularly crossed the railway at Northiam. One detail I don't understand -- the train passed at least two signals that were off, i.e. clear, for the opposite direction on the single line. Explanation, anyone?

    Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed this trip down memory lane. I looked at the signals at 28:51 and 30:02 they are set in the off position for a train from the opposite direction, I have only ever seen this when a signal box is switched out and the section is operated under one train in section rules, but that doesn't explain the signal at 33:01 unless it is operated locally to allow a train to enter the station or a signaled section. This kind of explains things - signalbox.org/block-system/closing-the-box/ When a box is switched out, all the signals operated by that box are left in the off position to allow trains to pass through as if the signal box and it's signals didn't exist. I was also interested to see no signals after that at 33:01 all the way to Bodiam, this suggests that this stretch of line is normally operated under one train in section rules. I hope this helps, maybe someone in the signaling department can confirm my explanation. PS: it is perfectly safe to operate under one train in section rules.

    Hi, I hope this video bought back good memories from your own trips to the line. I picked up a guide book in which there is an article about restoring the missing link, it reads "To date five new bridges have been installed and flood erosion measures have been taken. Land is continually purchased as it become available, The new station at Robertsbridge awaits the inevitable return of trains from Tenterden". The guide book gives the impression that it is no longer a matter of "if" but a matter of "when" the line connecting Bodiam to Robertsbridge sees the return of trains.

    These wonderful railways not only help us understand the past, they help us understand evolution, yesterday the horse drawn waggon-way, next the steam locomotive, today a tilting electric high-speed train, tomorrow ? I love technology, Britain is often a leader in tomorrows world. Today I'm operating a computer controlled milling machine, over 40 years ago I had to look at dials and count revolutions. It's the things I did in the past that help me understand the future.

    Hi, "No" it's not a true "driver's eye view", but it is a term the KZread algorithm likes, if I describe it as a "forward view" the algorithm won't recommend it, resulting in only a small number of people seeing it. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive my little white lie 😌.

    I see similar signals used on secondary railway lines at East European stations where it is an indication that everything is OK for the train to pass, I can only guess the green flag you see in this video has a similar function. I assume there was no green flag required when you worked the crossing, has much changed since that hot summer when you worked on the KESR?

    This is such a nice video. It is precious. I will be watching again and have subscribed. Now let me say that you could be using a better camera for all of the beauty you have to present. You should watch RailCowGirl doing train videos in Norway and use the same camera equipment that she uses. It would make your very nice video into an excellent production.

    Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I use the same cameras as railcowgirl does for a lot of her videos (GoPro 8 and 9), although I suspect she is better at selecting the correct settings, she also uses a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K whereas I use a Sony AX53. She has one massive advantage in that she is a train driver, giving her the opportunity to fine tune her settings over a number of runs at different times of the day. I am just a member of Joe Public and I rely on the kindness of drivers resulting in me having to set things up real quick and hope I've remembered to turn the camera on. I use the factory setting most of the time, although not ideal, I know I'm going to get a result I can alter if need be when I edit the video. I try to mount the camera on the outside of the loco if I can, sometimes this does result in too much wind noise, I have just ordered a WindSlayer from Amazon to try and improve the situation. There are a couple of settings in the camera I'll experiment with after reading suggestions from other GoPro users. I have used GoPro's since the GoPro Hero 2, they all suffer to some degree if the primary colour in the scenery is green whereas they deal well with lighter colours such as snowy scenes and rocky mountain terrain. Feedback is always welcome and I try to do what I can camera wise within my financial limitations, this channel is just a hobby, the money I earn from KZread makes a useful contribution, but I'm lucky if it covers a third of my costs and I don't feel comfortable asking viewers to contribute financially to my channel as many other creators do these days.

    Hello Robert, I looked up the diamond crossings and found this article - www.amusingplanet.com/2016/08/unusual-drawbridge-railway-crossing-in.html they are fascinating, never seen anything like it before. The K&ESR was originally a cross between a tramway and railway, often referred to as light railway. It was built to serve several smaller tramways and terminals used to transport agricultural products from the area, such as hops, cob nuts and apples, as time passed the lorry took over, leaving the railway with no real purpose, happily it survived long enough for the then infant enthusiast movement to realise its potential and save it for all to enjoy today.

    Hi, this is a heritage railway, a working museum that runs on most days throughout the summer and at weekends during the Spring and Autumn, there are also special Santa trains at Christmas. The line was originally closed to passenger traffic in 1954 and all traffic in 1961 after which most of the track was lifted.     I see the "whistle" signs and I'm wondering what they're for. Obviously they tell them to use the whistle, but why? In America, we have a W sign that means the same thing, but it's for the crew to sound the horn in an approach to a level crossing with a road, but I don't see any crossings coming up where the whistle signs are.

    The train passes several semaphore signals showing all clear for traffic travelling in the opposite direction. This is somewhat disconcerting until one remembers that the driver has the token.

    It is odd to see the signals cleared for the opposite direction, this happens when a signal box is switched out (off). It's signals effectively no longer exist so they are all set to the clear position.

    @@ollieb927 Some of the best cab ride videos are posted by train drivers, we are spoiled for choice in the UK although its harder to find good cab ride videos taken in Australia and New Zealand. It's nice to know you enjoy some of my Driver's Eye style videos, hopefully now Covid is under control, I'll be able to join rail tours again, as someone who doesn't work for the railways, I find it much easier to get a camera on the locomotive when travelling on a tour train or on a heritage railway.

    Nice one, thanks. Quality camera in use but - it seems - insufficient memory card that can not follow the camera 4k data flow and is losing pictures. This is why video does not run smooth and video sticks. Which than makes it unpleasant to watch. Otherwise: perfect, interesting and beautiful line, full of nature and it's colors and if filmed ''in a right way'' that this would be a perfect, high quality railway video. All this makes me sad seeing that the very same mistake is repeated again and again. A lot of resources are spent and videos are made that could be easily done much better and - as consequence - last much longer. Insulting anyone was not the purpose of my comment. I wish you all the best.

    I wanted to know why don’t they dig a tunnel and do an extension for the main line Train so they extend the unused abandoned underground stations. Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock and remix and make them all together and also redesign them overhead line and also make them into 5 cars per unit and also having 2 Disabled Toilets on those 5 cars per unit A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Scania N112, Volvo TD102KF, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 7-Speed Voith Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into a 11 car per unit so it could have less doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers.     Hello, Your video suffers from the default settings of the cameras which do not restore the dynamic range of the sensor, already not huge, hence the loss of detail in the shadows, the sky, and unrealistic colors. So as it is general, here is what I could gather as advice. absolutely prohibit Gopro 7, 8,9,10 with standard states Bit Rate-Standard Shutter-Auto EV Comp-0 White Balance - Auto ISO Min - 100 ISO Max - 1600 Sharpness-High Color-Gopro or "natural" wind "AUTO" OK with theses states: HIGHT Rate-Standard fort GoPro 8,9,10 Shutter-Auto EV Comp-1 outdoor, -1.5 -2 in forest for all GoPro White Balance - FIXED 5500K ISO Min - 100 ISO Max - 400 for all GoPro Sharpness-LOW GoPro 8,9,10 Color-FLAT for all GoPro Sharpness-MEDIUM is OK ONLY fort highest definition. Otherwise always bad (for exemple with GoPro10 BAD in 4K, good ONLY 5.3K, GoPro 8 BAD in2.7K good only in 4K) wind "NO" post-production: export with gamma 1.05 - 1.15 to compensate for the overall lack of brightness in low and medium light.     Hello, thank you for the advice and video links, I have already started to look at some of them. I will experiment with the settings to see what happens. The video back from KZread is never as good as the original video although uploading at 4K does seem to help. Cheers. Tim.
