In today's video, we don't learn much - but we do get to see me go rather gooey over a 1964 Porsche 356C.

It is allways an absolute privilege to sit down to one of your videos James. You one of the few down to earth KZreadrs who can give a relatively unbiased opinion on a car. Keep up the great work it’s much appreciated, Mac

Thanks mac, very kind
The joys of low powered low torqued light cars, as they are closer to pedalling but without actual effort, just patience. Once you're at 50mph in a stretch and throw top gear in, transmission whines a bit, car starts to shake, to wander over patches and bumps, noise gets into the cabin, and you feel like having just approached Hunaudieres in a '60s le Mans, heading towards 360kph. Straights never end and you eventually brake late for bends, going down each gears heel and toeing.

mmm reminds me of my 1994 honda civic
I was genuinely smiling all the way through this review. Wonderful little car.
I love a good box as much as the next person who was born in the early 80s but man, imagining a time when the roads were filled with cars with these sorts of lines and shapes, makes me feel wistful for a time i never experienced. Beautiful car. 😍
Living close to Stuttgart, I am intrigued by Porsche's (early) history. What a great car the 356 is, a true Wirtschaftswunder masterpiece.
Many years ago, I drove a 356A along the old A14. The car just flowed along the road, no fuss, no bother - afterwards my travelling companion and I worked out that for the last 50 miles of the journey, we'd averaged 80 mph.....without once going over 100mph! Of course, the roads were pretty much free of traffic, very few speed restrictions and no cameras at all. But just the same, what a trip, and what a magnificent car.
The 356 in my opinion is a beautiful art piece of a car
I was heading down the A928 towards Dundee one fine Tuesday afternoon last July, and had just crossed over the A94 just south of Glamis Castle. Suddenly a red Porsche 356 flashed past the other way showing an impressive turn of speed on a twisty section of road. Just as I was thinking what a rare sight that was, I rounded the bend to see James standing there, camera in hand. Then it all made sense. HeyJames, glad to see you enjoyed the A928 as much as I do. It doesn’t go on forever, but it’s a sweet little stretch of road with some amazing views. Have really enjoyed all the Porsche content over the last few weeks.

You'll get more enjoyment at driving a slow car fast than you will driving a fast car slow. 😊
7:16 was the spirit of Clarkson voicing his displeasure with this "glorified beetle"
My personal favourite model of Porsche.
What a beaut! The shade and sex appeal of 50s lipstick on wheels. It does clash with that shirt though (the anti- sex-appeal device), in a way the 993 turbo didn't. Also, this car has about the same power and weight as my old VW Polo, but looks like it's a million times more fun to drive. A back-to-back comparison with a boring car of the same power and weight would be enlightening as to what makes a car great to drive.
What a stunning car!!
Thanks for the nice review and scenery. I had one of these, a 1965 356C - silver with red interior. Got it new. Wish I still had it.
Fine looking classic car. Price did show how much of a bargain the E - Type Jag was. Great that both cars exist.
I could not be more envious that you got to drive a 356. I would dearly love to drive one myself.
One of the most beautiful cars ever

To coin a Jayemme euphonism.....looks too much like a beach buggy to me (then again every single 2 door sports car I look at now, fits that exact euphonism !_
Absolutely I'm counting the number of "absolutely"s in James' videos. Currently I'm at 5,342,130...
This is so beautiful...
Love these cars back in the seventies, yes im that old, a chap I knew bought a runner for £300 and used it for grass tracking, it sat in his farm yard rotting away for years.
I had a 356B and miss it dearly. Every one I’ve driven has been an absolute sweetheart of a car. My personal favorite Porsches.
Has to be the nicest looking car on earth ! simply beautiful looking design, thank you.
A beauty and what a story, she is a stunner with great engine sound. And I appreciate your focus on the joys of motoring. Big horsepower all fine and dandy, but getting out there with a car you enjoy driving the highways and byways, be it a retro Micra or a classic Porsche in this case, that is the fun. And in mesmerizing landscape! Thank you :)
Not only was it produced the year I was born, but it is an absolutely a beautiful Motor...thanks for the content Jay, appreciate it, Mate, from across the pond!!
Small correction: The 90 PS SC version of the C had also 1.6 l, not 2.0 l. The 2.0 l Carrera 2 version had 130 PS.
ive liked this video for 2 reasons....1 for how beautiful this car is 2. thrashing that Suzuki in a 50+ year old car...utterly brilliant
God what a sound that car has! Superb vehicle. Porsche is a dream brand for most of us.
What absolutely cracking review of this beautiful example!😍
The SC was not 2 litres but also a 1600 but at a higher state of tune, previously it had been referred to as the Super 90. The 2 litre was a later 912 engine. Porsches were more expensive than e-types because they represented, and continue to represent, the ultimate successful racing machine that was totally useable day to day and buyers were prepared to pay the premium. The e-type at the time was nonetheless also a superb vehicle.

And the Carrera was 2 litres.
@Jastor00
2 жыл бұрын
To add specifics, the 912E had a 2 liter type 4 VW engine. The 65-69 912 had a detuned version of the 356SC 1600 engine. As William Keeley says, the Carrera engine available in the later 356s was 2 liters, hence "Carrera 2"

@@Jastor00 thanks for the additional info, it can also be mentioned for anyone looking for more detail that the 2 litre in the 356 was a completely different unit to the pushrod 1600 356’s and 2 litre 912’s. That 2 litre was a bored out Le Mans type 547 unit with twin shaft driven overhead cams and indeed was seen in the 356 as the Carrera2 in 1962 which predates the car being reviewed. It was an extremely rare and expensive car in the day as was the earlier 1600 Carrera, and it doesn’t bear thinking about what they go for today particularly in RHD. As an aside I was always a little disappointed when Porsche started using the Carrera moniker for their ‘normals’ as it took a little of the mystique away from the earlier models including the 2.7 911.

@@snowythecat9596 I agree, but at that time, Porsche, like many auto makers, were struggling for survival. So I can understand using Carrera name to sell their cars.
James: Much appreciated your videos. You bring such a humility and authenticity to your videos. Addictive to watch ! Regards from Singapore
I really enjoy almost all of your videos James, but this is only the second or maybe third that I genuinely envy you the experience. A 356 on those roads? Just perfect!!
What a beautiful car - good to see it drives as well as it looks as so often older classics can be a disappointment to those of us brought up with more modern machinery. I remember driving a late E type V12 on a track and suddenly realising I couldn’t stop the thing as fast as I’d imagined..... I learned very fast that day.....
Missed this treat at the time. Very much enjoyed. Thank you.
What a lovely little car that is
Nice that you review these older cars too and can identify which ones are a little easier te drive. This 356 just looks perfect, I must say! And 75 hp is adequate enough for a car that old and light.
The 356 SC had the same 1.6L flat four in 1964 as the 356 C. It had a higher state of tune at 90HP. The only 2.0L available in the 356 range was the Carrera that had the very special and VERY expensive quad cam engine and that engine was I think around 130HP in street tune.

First time I’ve ever seen jay overtake someone 😂 brilliant absolutely brilliant
What a gorgeous piece of motoring history.
Absolutely beautiful. Performance before it came loaded with pretense. It has what I like to refer to as 'that steel wheel charm'.
Absolutely stunning Porsche.
What a great looking car, pure and simple....timeless as well😎
What a beauty
The drive-by shots made me think of one of my favourite computer games; Need for Speed - Porsche unleashed. Terrific video as always!
I'm glad you reviewed a car like this even as you said you weren't teaching anything here about the car. This was enjoyable. I didn't know this was on a par with the E-type price-wise. I would have never thought that. The E-type was a stunner too but seemingly more sophisticated and complex for the same money. I have a 2016 981 Spyder and I still lust after one of these. I wish I bought one when they were the unwanted stepchild. In the 70's you could find good ones cheap. No more.
Just beautiful xx
The joke back in the day was that they made the windows bigger so that you could see where you were going when the car spun out. I never got into them, they were expensive even in 1967 when I got my first car, a '64 101 Series Alfa Romeo Sprint Normale. Like the Porsche, the Alfa rusted heavily, I got into doing bodywork because of that car.
Great video. Pure enjoyment!
If I had that car I’d spend 10 minutes just staring at the steering wheel and dashboard every time I got in it. A very lovely thing.
loved the experience you shared well done !!
When this video started I could've swore I heard the start of Autobahn 🤣👍
I just love the 356 really i should drive one before i die. Thank you so much for this video it is such a delight to watch.

Fine episode ..... love the retro features.
Fantastic thank you
I’ve never seen one before she’s a beauty 👍🇦🇺
Beautiful! lots of lovely sports cars like this get bloated out or spoilt on later models...Porsche, E-Type, 240Z etc etc
You had to drive 356 B Carrera 2. Porsche 356 series are indeed classics.
Awesome car. Fantastic video. Keep up the good work.
Good talk old boy!
Well balanced review as always. Love your work, keep it up! (more oldies please :)
Give me style over pure speed anytime. 👏🏽 as Jay Leno says, you get the most enjoyment accelerating below 60 anyway in a real world situation. Great review. 🎗
Beautiful car thanks for sharing 👍.
Beautiful car great video thanks for giving us such a treat!
Beautiful 🤤
Beautiful car that’s what a call a real classic !
James you looked like you thoroughly enjoyed yourself driving this beautiful motor.
Love it! Fuel tank not right for a C, so that's a bit odd. The SC was still 1600cc but correct on the power👍
What a fabulous car, it puts my Boxster 986 in the shade!
356 is my dream car, like a lot of people! I'd love to drive and review one some day.
The face when overtaking made me chuckle 😂
I have a 65 SC, it’s quite surprising and fun to drive. Will it go 80 down the highway, keep up with traffic, yes and yes. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by it.
My Dad had the same model in silver! Awesome 29 PMY
Great Video 👍
What a fabulous car! Older cars may not be as good as newer cars, but they do have one thing new cars simply do not possess: Soul
Just like the 356, a lot of cars were more expensive than am E type. I suppose the E type must have been a real bargain thinking about it now.
Marvelous!!!
Now that’s a cool car !
The seat folding down was funny; not gonna lie :)
Brilliant!
Faster than a Suzuki Crossover!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am always amazed by James's ability to talk. His grammar and punctuation are incredible, truly. I often imagine his speech in text form, and find myself highly impressed by how accurate it is. If he's not reading his texts (which assume he doesn't), then this is truly delivery at its best. Hats off to him.

Something quite cool about an old car driven fast on the road
Beautiful.
This car is 1 year older than me, wish i was in as good nick.
Excellent video, delightful car - I think I could live with it though the price is still a bit challenging !
These are big big money now but lovely things. And laughed at the look over the shoulder of triumph at the Suzuki, looked a lot of fun driving the 356, how it should be.
Beautiful car!
The late Alan Clark absolutely raved about the 356, so it must have been good. But of course it wasn’t cheap.
A friend had a white 356 convertible in the 80s and it was in basic running condition for the road. They were cheap back then about $5-10k. But for the money they were very cheap and chic cool for the time.
It's my second favorite Porsche, the Carrera GT being number 1.
Hi lovely car and you looked like you enjoyed this car 😂
One of the prettiest shapes the cabriolet even more so.
Mr Porsche?! That would be Doktor Porsche.
A verry good looking and verry fast Beetle !
I owned a 1960 356B Roadster (not to be confused with the Cabriolet) from 1977 to 1982. Everything Jay says about them is true. You could pile on the miles on a road trip. They were that comfortable and, while they didn't have a lot of power, you could maintain a pretty high rate of speed overall. Jay did make one mistake, however. The 90 DIN horsepower SC was also 1600cc. There was a 2 litre quad cam Carrera model which is extremely rare and mind boggling valuable.
lovely old thing.... the similarities with the beetle, being a child whose father owned several and to which i can attest are no matter. beetles were excellent automobiles. ...i miss vent windows. convenient places to ash your cigarette and dispense with the butt. :)
Nice review of a beautiful car. But there was no 2 liter SC. The SC did produce 95 hp but was still a 1.6.
Had a soft spot for these, ever since NFS Porsche 2000.
We're geting some great stuff today. Brilliant. One of the sports teachers at my secondary school had a tatty one of these. He was an arse but loved the car. Thanks to the owner of this wonderful thing for letting us get to ride along. And, thank you James for taking us with you.
Nice!
It's a very cool car
