Driven Dirty: 100-year old race cars saved from life in museum | Why I Drive #14
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
"A race car that sits in a museum is a travesty," says Brian Blain, founder of the Blain Motorsports Foundation. Brian's obsession with pre-World War I race cars began decades ago when a family friend gifted him a trunk full of old racing memorabilia. He was already an avid motorcycle and car racer, but the contents of the trunk opened up a whole new world to him. Now, he centers his efforts on finding, preserving, restoring, and most importantly, DRIVING these amazing vintage race cars.

Keeping history alive is exactly why I take my 1926 Model T Ford Coupe out regularly. It's best when they're used.

that goes for any thing cars motorcycles boats planes they are never in better condition than when they are being used no hanger queens or museum pieces or static displays required if you can't see it run I am always disappointed

I like to think of it like this. The only other way we could have witnessed these cars in action is by 100 year old sparse and degraded films. We get to see what it LOOKED and what it SOUNDED like thanks to these guys. And now it will be preserved for a very long time thanks to our capability to archive this footage.

Yeah, I hate seeing these things in a museum.
I was walking down the street in Athy when 4 of these old race cars drove past by. They were huger than these three. They were sputtering and backfiring. The valves were clacking and the exhaust was loud and thick with smoke. They smelled like the lube pit at Oil Can Henry's. The drivers and passengers were having a wonderful time. Glad I got to see it.

Not sure that entirely makes sense as generalisation....but I get the sentiment.
I always think when I see a museum car, "I sure would love to see that in motion." I love what you guys are doing with these cars.
That was an awesome episode! Thumbs way up!

The s76 is an amazing car for me it’s from a time in Europe when the old world was crumbling pre ww1 cars were driven and made by a different breed of men and women
Good work! I get negative comments from people when I drive my 1929 or 1931 Ford. Things like, "That belongs in a museum" or "You drive that on the ROAD?". I have to remind people: It's a car. It was built to be driven, not to be left in a large garage for dead, but with the lights on. Keep it up, and best wishes!
These men ARE heroes. Thanks for keeping the history of these vehicles alive and well.
Friends used to ask me why I drove my '68 Buick Electra when I got her, instead of cleaning her up & putting her away( I had the trunk's floor replaced, but other than that, it was basic maintenance). I replied, "Sure, they're hard to find parts for, & maybe you worry a little about getting it hit - but it was built to be DRIVEN - otherwise, you just have a really large paperweight." I wish I had her today - she would start on the 1st turn, no matter what the weather.
the visual quality of this episode is exceptional ...a whole new level wow!!!!! great job
The fog in the air when they pulled away from the garages made it seem of the era! timeless!

There are still some people from the younger generation born with gasoline in their veins. There numbers are much smaller that past years from the post WWII era up through the 80's and 90's but they are out there. They are often dismissed because they might be playing around with a 92 Honda but give them credit for being willing to open the hood and turn a wrench or two. There are no $900 dollar 69 Camaro's that run and drive like I was able to buy when I turned 16 in 1982. They are buying what is out there and affordable.

I can’t express how this makes me feel. I’ve seen these cars at Indy and to be in their presence is so breath taking. I talked briefly with one of the gentlemen working on the National, I wanted to ask more questions but I was in such awe of the machine I was as they say speechless. I am so thankful that you get these out and run them so the average person ( like myself) can see and hear them. Thank you for this wonderful video. Every time I watch it it brings those wonderful memories back.
Good grief, simply fantastic. Thanks a lot for saving, restoring, driving, repairing and showing them in public. All the best luck to all involved people.

Dear@@Hagerty Thank you for answering. But I'm not a fan (= not a ventilator). ;-) ;-) ;-) I'm human and simply like your stuff. Best regards.
What an amazingly evocative video. The footage of those old racers on those dusty old roads is very reminiscent of old black and white movies, Keystone Cops or Chaplin. You chaps have my vote with respect to using these wonderful old machines rather than them becoming dust gatherers in some museum. Lovely production on the video as well. Great job.
I'm happy to see one young person in the group to keep these cars alive.
This is so awesome. Can’t stand it when I see a museum full of cars and machines that are meant to be used!
Well done for keeping the history alive. The oldest car I drive is an 1898 Panhard Levassier, it was we believe a factory race car although it now has a saloon body. It is part of the Shuttleworth Collection where I volunteer in the vehicle section, we also have a 1904 De Dietrich-also a race car, and a lot of other cars and aircraft up to 1939. The unique point of Shuttleworth is that all of the collection runs and drives or flies-it is believed that we have the oldest flying aircraft in the world. Shuttleworth collection is based at the Old Warden airfield in Old Warden Bedfordshire UK.
2:37 that scene was so beautiful!
Man, old race cars are something else. A chassis with an engine and wheels, chain driven, hand brakes, cool as hell
That looks like so much fun. A day out with the boys and their toys. Loved the drive through the orchard / orange grove.

#16 is the most steampunk race car of them all. That shiny copper or brass fittings looks so cool.
Great GREAT GREAT photography! So beautiful was the start up I honestly had tears in the eyes. Part due to the fact that the love of my life (KSK 362, a car which I built by hand over 86 weeks using only found junk as I couldn't work as I had to have major surgery), I sold i order to buy y house to be mortgage free. Not a summer goes by without my missing flies in my teeth. I drove that car in the 1997 Liege-Agadir-Liege Sahara rally, I came last... but you know what, I still finished which was more than the Porsche and the Lotus team did. Keep it shiny side up and Greasy side down people, these are more than machines... they are time machines with a beating heart. 🏆

You gentlemen are heroes for saving and restoring those cars. It's nice to see them getting used for their intended purpose.
MY father in law owned a 1911 Pierce Arrow Raceabout which raced at the first Indy 500 as well... he drove the car on the streets until he sold it in the early 1990's. He still drives a 1905 Cadiallac and a 1908 Barrel Hood Franklin, a 25 Lincoln dual cowl phaeton.
Great to see these cars out in the sunshine like they should be

These guys are from the 10's and 20's I am from the 50's And their engines sound satisfying.
Wow! Nice camera work! Very well done. Love the shop and the cars are awesome!
absolutely wonderful! reminds me of the Rush tune; red Barchetta. that primal wind in your face, the smells of the leather, oil,the song of the metal clockwork machinery meshing in exquisite precision providing that exhilarating rush of speed and adrenaline. the uncertainty of missing that gear for the next shift or maybe throwing that belt or wheel passing you by from ancient fatigue or metal stressed failure leading to catastrophic entropy in the next corner! the cacophony of clattering solid lifters coupled with the exhaust smell and note, the crunch of the gravel so close under tire you can practically touch the ground and feel the pebbly spray in your face! primal indeed! I love y'all wearing the original type gear goggles and throw back uniforms of the time, it must make you feel connected through time with a hundred years ago long warp thread binding you to the hallowed golden pioneering days of motor car racing in its infancy. it truly is a wonderful exciting leap back in time, and people say time machines don't exist, I sincerely beg to differ. thank you gentlemen.▪☆☆☆▪

I think, museum cars must be traced and studied, for creating blueprints, just for any hobbyists, who want made a replica. In that case, this cars will be immortal, they must be immortal. Great vid!
I never understood car shows. It is so boring to just walk around and look. I love the show n go at Brainered international raceway. Classic cars doing what they are meant to do. I enter my "classic car" in drift events, track race and drag race it every chance I get. I bought it for that and that is what I do with it. My neighbor has cars he has never driven. I respect him for preserving original cars. But I told him he at least has to experience them. He now will drive them a few times a year. Seeing him now, he is even more enthused by the cars he owns. He is so excited now when he talks about his last drive experience. Cars are meant to be driven and taking care of. In a way they are a part of my family.
