As a kid my friends parents owned the village bakery, his mum used to deliver bread around the village with their Humber ! Lovely cars 👍🏻🇬🇧

The only car I ever made money on was a 1963 Hawk. Bought it for £30 in 1983 and absolutely loved it. Mine was classic black with red interior and was a four speed manual. I really wanted to keep it and restore it to pristine. It didn't need much really, just a bit of bodywork on the boot lid. The steering box was worn, so driving it was a bit like steering a boat....anticipatory nudges required. Parking required a bit of muscle! Unfortunately, my wife just couldn't cope with the column gearchange. She could do first and second but the push and up for third, nope. So I was forced to sell it after nine months and got £80 for it.

I hope Martin is in better health. Thank you for the Humber experience. An underrated marque and one I admire for the solidity and clean lines of its cars.

Thank you for your kind words. He is still in hospital, was doing well then got another infection, suffice to say he's unlikely to be doing much work on cars again.

Enjoyed the video. Humbers really are lovely cars. Totally agree on Automatic vs Manual, there's too much snobbery around having Manual transmission.

Looking at this beauty . I would argue that todays cars have lost the plot. Light and airy interior , not in the least bit claustrophobic , rear seat raised higher than the front ones so no car travel sickness . Heater controls simple and effective with no audible fan noise , car able to take 6 persons in comfort and the dashboard in walnut and so beautiful and calming to look at . Todays cars are nothing more than an extension of a busy day at the office . In some ways , I would prefer the Hawk to my Imperial .

And, they're only a ton-and-a-half weight, for what was the largest British monocoque at the time.

I expect the trans is most likely a Borg 35 as were intended for small motors. However, it was not gospel . I had a Chrysler 265 Inch ( 4300cc) that had a Borg 35 and that was a mistake. I had problems from day one. The car was available with 3 Webber carbs which was an even bigger mistake as motors failed. In reality the 318 V8 would have been a better set up. The Humber is a lovely well built car . The engine may be a tad small but probably will last forever. The trans leak , what can happen when parked the fluid can drain into pan and go up dip stick filler pipe and then leak from " O" ring on bottom of tube. My Chrysler also did it.

Thanks for the comment. It's a good punchy engine but some power is lost through the autobox, as they do.

Thank you for this video. Humber autos. I’ve never seen one here in Ohio but I’m thinking these were fairly high end cars, do I have that right? These seem to be very well built and quiet. Here I see the occasional MG sports convertible and a very few original Minis. I’ve noticed that many vintage British cars are manual shift, of which I’m a big fan. In my learning days we all learned using three speed manual shifts. Thanks again.

You are correct in thinking that they were above average cars. Favoured by the upper-middle classes and Government. Very strong and well made. Comfortable and reliable.

The Hawk engine's great strength was its's low down torque it pulled like a train it would have made the ideal engine for a Land+Rover size 4x4 , the car's only real weakness was it shared the manual gearboxes with the Hillman Minx and later Hunter although the ratios were from the Sunbeam models. It is actually possible to convert a manual gearbox Hawk to a floor gear change simply using parts from from a Minx or Hunter to suit the type of gearbox fitted. Only the last series cars had synchromesh on 1st gear The power steering pump in the car in the video probably came from an Wolsley 18/85 land crab.

Thanks for the info, I believe some components from the rear axle were also derived from Hillman, the bearings being a weak spot on a much heavier and powerful car.

The Rootes group made some excellent car's and trucks, some trucks had the ts3 two stroke diesel engine which was very economical.

Put it in "D1" - - so it actually uses first gear to start off. D2 only uses 2nd and 3rd (top) gears, and is very smooth, but woefully slow on take off.

Good advice, this can also be used for engine braking.
