Had a belt problem that I could not solve. You hit it to a tee. Much thanks and appreciation from somebody tooling on cars for 55 years

Thank you sir!, I had one come in last week with a shredded belt, completely soaked with oil and coolant, I checked pulleys and bearings all seamed OK, the balancer felt tight/ intact by hand... but being a GM tech, never really looked too hard at the balancer other than it was tight, didn't know what a good one should look like... it came back belt shredded, 100% that's the issue, plus I tried to sell a front crank seal last time, I wonder if I would have realized the balancer was fucked while doing the seal? Either way, thank you for the brilliant tech tip!

Misalignment or when some accessory starts to seize, is common and that is the result, shredding. Normal belt wear will be cracks etc.. Moral of the story, anytime you see a shredded belt don't just replace the belt.

How many times you replaced belt before you figured that out?

Just once. My guys checked the pulleys and looked around a bit but missed the crankshaft pulley/harmonic dampener. Engine seemed to new to have problems like that but the van came from Las Vegas and it was summer. In Utah it does not get as hot so we have not seen that issue so early. We normally see dry rot or if there is an oil leak the rubber swells and gets spongy.

@@jeepfix5815 Thanks for the video and good explanation. I have a few questions. Can turning on the AC make the noise louder if the harmonic balancer is bad? Did you replace the oil seal as well? Would you have a part number or a link for the oil seal?

Is there a notch on the crank that the new OEM harmonic balancer slides into?

Did you ever figure out the answer to this question? I have to replace the crankshaft seal and pull off the harmonic balancer this weekend... would love to know if a puller is needed as well.
