it def isnt! Just learned how to do forward crossovers and those require a level of skill -backwards crossovers are very technical.

Atomic Breeze, if you can do forward crossovers, then backwards crossovers should be easy. I personally find backwards crossovers much easier than forwards crossovers. Think about it this way, the front foot crosses around the back foot, and then you just take out the back foot, and use it to grab the ice. Then you just keep repeating that.

I would like to say thank you. i like that they zoom in and dont rush into the video. this does help a lot compare to other videos a lot. i always get cross eyed or confuse when other people over explain into a cross over. cut to the chase, zoom, slow down the video then go normal speed. very good !!! i will subscribe just because of this video

My God you are giving such clear and great visual instructions in your videos on how to improve ice skating. You are a great coach. You are simply the best. I am watching all of your videos and I know that with your help I will be able to do it and master finally the art of ice skating. Ice skating is such a beautiful sport and I thank you for keeping it alive with your skills and clear instructions. Your videos are so super interesting. You are simply great. My backward skating is not the same on both sides. One side seems to be stronger than the other. With the help of your videos I know I will improve and strengthen my weak side. thank you.

+Hockey Pro Training definitely helpful. I showed my 9 yr old this video today and explained what you were saying in the boxes. Tonight at practice, I could see improvement. He wasn't leaning back on his heels too much, skating very smooth. Definitely helpful.

The key is to go into the stop with your knees bent, and just before you turn your feet, push up so as to unload your edges. This will allow you to quickly turn your skates without having your feet shoot out from underneath you. Once you can do a 2 foot parallel stop, work on being able to do the same thing on 1 foot. Start with the outside foot (right foot for a stop to the left). Once you can do this, try it with the inside foot (left foot for a stop to the left). This latter one is quite hard. Again, the key is to unload the edges just prior to turning your feet quickly.

In my opinion, after watching literally every backwards crossover on youtube, this is not possible to learn visually. What would help is a TOP view diagram of arrows showing what PATH each foot traces, and WHEN each foot is providing power (this is by far the hardest to understand). Also, I've seen a backwards crossover video where the skater stepped the right foot in front of the left foot regardless of whether he was skating backwards camera-right direction, or camera-left. How can that be?

It is impossible to learn a physical skill without attempting it, understanding the mechanics, and repeating until you have the mind-muscle-neural connection to execute. I learnt backwards cross-overs the hard way, by myself, and without a coach. I fell over many, many times on the ice. With time, practice and some coaching tips, I picked up important cues and tips to generate power and I can say that today I am as confident skating backwards as forwards. There is still a tonne of technique to learn and practice never ends, but hit the ice and get some bruises!

I think the term "Undercut" would help with you understanding the outside edge in the crossover. With the outside edge you are always driving the force back under you, even when skating forward. When teaching or just explaining the crossover not teaching first the undercut makes it hard. What you do with the inside edge of the front foot comes natural with the movement of the crossover once you have undercut. Its like the cart before the horse so it needs to be taught first. His outside edge undercut drill in the beginning is a good one but my favorite is done in a straight line with the back foots outside edge going as far as you can going underneath while balancing in a straight line. Its a drill like balancing on one foot while using the inside edge of the other foot to push out and thus a forward stride, a very basic move but in this case back foot outside edge pushing under. To maybe answer your question about how does skating backward both ways with the same foot in the foot works, I would say you can start the move with either because when you complete a full crossover both feet are transitioning from front or back position in the move, but not in a partial crossover like in his outside edge drill I referenced.
