Drilling for soil samples

Before a structure or building can be constructed, geotechnical engineers conduct environmental site assessments on the land where the construction will take place. These assessments include soil tests in the areas proposed for development.
The engineers examine soil samples to learn about the underground composition of the soils in the area, and make predictions about the long-term effects the soil at the site might have on the walls, foundation, septic system or any other components of the proposed structure.
Some soils, such as clays, have a tendency to shrink and swell when their water content changes. This expansive property can put pressure on structure and foundation walls and cause them damage. Other soils are poor at settling or sinking under weight, causing uneven ground. Foundations that are built on these soils are at risk for cracking or bending.

Autohammers are overrated.. They're one trick ponies. Cathead and rope you can do anything you want with.

@@robmurphy806 including but not limited to sending the hammer to the top of the mast when the rope gets wet.

I pulled a rope for 10 years in another life on a cathead and the risks are significant. I am now a HSE Professional that tries to keep "kids" from doing the stupid things I did. Auto hammers are a one trick pony, agreed, however no one has ever had their arm ripped off by one. I worked with a gentlemen that took two trips over a cathead and had his arm re-built once. The slightest variable (temperature, moisture) can have an effect and things happen quick. The way the worker in the video had to switch hands when removing the hammer from the pot, and juggle the rope, is insane. This is is representative of an industry that is way too far behind the times and only sees change with blood.

I'm just the guy who made the recording - unfortunately I don't know anything about the equipment other than it looked like these guys were being safe - which, to me, would be the most important!

Sam Sinz from what I can gather, the site investigation is for a residential area meaning more than likely it will be 1 to 2 borings. Since it is only a few, the budget for this project might be miniscule. A drop hammer like this is usually cheaper. And even most equations are still based on the N values from a drop hammer and not mechanically driven hammers.
