I flew point of the mountain in March of 1984. Very rare to have a site that allows landing for a bit and then launching for more air time. We flew on a Sunday when I swear there were so many gliders in the air you could hardly make a turn. The wind was steady on so the ridge lift was stable. Eventually it died down a bit and the only two gliders left on the back ridge was me in a comet 180 and a girl flying a green coloured glider about half the size of my comet. There was this hang gliding bum living in his station wagon and flying a glider with the word telluride covering half his glider. Long shaggy beard and living the life he chose. NIce to see hang gliding alive and well in Utah

V.E, we must be a similar vintage. I got started hang gliding at 16 in New Zealand. Background in ag, warbird operator, and currently firebombing in Australia. NOTHING compares to the pure fun and beauty of hang gliding. I sure do miss it now. Keep flying mate. I think I understand your wish.

I'm a 42 year old operating engineer thats served in the US Air Force overseas that has always wanted to hang glide that I never had the opportunity to do it and now I am on a quest and this time next year I hope to have over 500 hours of flight under my belt. I have found my instructor and by this summer I will have been trained and a T2C in my possession with all the safety gear as well. Im so pumped and can't wait to mix with this amazing community of people. Thank you

Started hang gliding in 1983, stopped in 93 when I took up bigger wings in the form of sailplanes. I'll be back to the relative freedom of a flexwing at some point and hope to visit with y'all. Great video.

Thanks so much! Looking forward to having you back on a flex wing. Let me know if you need any advice on wing type or an instructor for some refresher lessons. I think you'll be amazed at how much better this generation of hang gliders is compared to what you were flying in 93.

I always wondered what happened with the Lindberg brothers. They were regular fixtures at Torrey Pines in the '70s and then they were just gone. What great times those were.

WOW !! WOW !! DOES THIS EVER BRING BACK FOND MEMORIES 🤣😁😃In my travels as national sales manager ( 1973 to 1976) for the Chandelle Corporation, a major hanggliding Manufacturing company back in the day. THiS was one of my all time favorite flying sights and is the sole reason I moved to UTAH in 1976. I'd sleep overnight in my VW bus, soar for an hour or two, then go to a hi-mountain site for some THERMALS and then it was back to the NORTH SIDE OF THE POINT OF THE MOUNTAIN for some SUPER SMOOOOTH RIDGE SOARING TO WATCH THE SUNSET😂WE USED TO CALL THAT A TRIPPLE HEADER😲👍🏻CAN YOU GUESS WHAT'S ON MY BUCKET LIST? From the first region 4 director of the USHGA THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES

John (Jon)? Lindberg, yeah he was one of the pioneers at Makapuu. He and his brother were kite bums living at Camp Olamana. Let's see, them, Linda Tracy and Barry, Mike Benson, can't remember the others. I went over there a few winters to fly Makapuu late 70's early 80's but don't recall meeting him. I'm 74 and still fly occasionally with an old UP Condor which I inherited, soar for an hour to make sure I can still do it. I flew against SLC guy Larry Tudor a couple of times in competition. He was in a class by himself in those days. My main ride is a Long EZ which I built myself and have over 2,000 hours on it and you know what? It's not as much fun as hang gliding.

Yup a 1972 edition of National Geographic had a special on hang gliding. It featured the Dave Cronk Kite made from plastic film, tape, and bamboo. Never the less I was hooked from that day until I stopped in 2012.

Great video, great photography! Don’t know if anybody’s noticed but the audio completely cuts out about 2/3 of the way through for about five or six minutes. I don’t know if it’s possible to go fix that and re-post this without losing all the comments but I was wondering if anybody knew that. Anyway maybe I’ll see you there sometime!

Hi have John doing a "rocket launch" at Makapuu in his Cumulus 5B from 1976 on my "Hawaii Hang Gliding 1976-1977 : Makapu'u" here on KZread. He is at 2:39. His brother does a self-launch at 0:37. He is one of the nicest guys you could ever know.

WOW...... I finally "met" Jon Lindberg!!!! I lived in the Beach House, with Ray Hook, on Laumilo Street in 1977 & 1978. Jon was the legend of Makapuu and I never met him, in 3 years. Now I understand why. He must have found this flying paradise, Utah. I also flew Makapuu in 1976. I lived in Calgary Canada. Other pilots I flew with included Jim Hoover, Linda Tracy, Barry Gordon, Mike Benson, Dan Child, "Mercury," Bob Combs, Mike Rehfeld(sp) & Blythe Coulter. If you want to read about the Waimanalo Lifestyle and Makapuu, google "Hang Gliding circa 1976" This should bring up a tribute to John Hughes, which has morphed into Waimanalo memories. If you check this out, be sure to click onto the "newer" entries.
