I bought mine at Toys R Us on launch week.. Toys R Us was the plug! I was stacked up with dreamcast games, many sleeper hit at half the price..I had a pretty good collection but I lost it. So I bought my second dreamcast last year, I want to mod it with a ps3 Fat retro compatible spare parts but I don't know if I can do that.. still I'm playing Ikaruga in 2018

Yeah, I still remember when they announced they stopped support for it. SEGA are complete assholes. It was the same with the Saturn. They burned their bridges with sooo many companies, who then went on to make great games on the PS1, and PS2. SO all we were left with were 2d Shooters, and coin-sucking arcade games. These are all great now! But when you had the option of buying a 2D shooter or fighting game for $50, or the latest Tomb-Raider, or amazing unseen-3D game, it wasn't a hard choice for many people.

Daniel Linger I totally agree with you :) Gaming moves on, and many factors especially business affects how things play out. Still we got some great major releases in 2001 after DC was discontinued.. like one of the last releases here in Europe that was Shenmue II that I got at release. Can't believe it's been 15 years since I played through the game which ended abruptly at a cliffhanger, and that there is finally going to be a Shenmue III. Glad I didn't know at the time how long the wait was going to be though lol :)

I just bought a Sega Dreamcast and I love it. I never had one when I was a kid, but I'm so going to be rocking it out now that I finally own one. It has replaced my Xbox 360 as the favorite video game console I own, because without this innovative little console, online gaming wouldn't be as popular as it is nowadays. The Dreamcast paved the way for consoles that came after it. Sega Dreamcast might have failed in the consumer market, but if there was ever a system that could say it paved the way for future consoles to succeed, it would be the Sega Dreamcast. Love this stuff.

Skies of Arcadia is a hidden gem? I was always the impression that was one of the most highly sought after games for sega dreamcast collectors. Your absolutely right though, the dreamcast had some of the best arcade ports of a lot of fighters and shoot'em ups at the time. I just recently finished my dreamcast collection a couple of weeks ago, can't wait to give all these games a try.

  • @nickolasecker9596

The reason Capcom supported the Dreamcast so heavily is that the Dreamcast basically ran on a modified version of Sega's NAOMI arcade hardware which a lot of Capcoms games used: Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, Cannon Spike, Capcom vs Snk, Giga Wing 2, Heavy Metal Geomatrix, Project Justice, Power Stone 1 and 2 and Spawn all used it so it was very easy for them to port games over, and could also support games like Street Fighter III 3rd Strike, Mars Matrix, and others easily because of the sheer power the system offered, the Ps1 and N64 just did not do very good arcade ports at the time because Arcade hardware was generally more advanced until the Dreamcast came along and offered up a system that was just as advanced as the arcade units of the time.

A lot of the reason the Dreamcast had so many arcade style games was because it shared hardware with the Sega Naomi arcade platform so ports didn't take much to do. Also, I did play through halflife on the dreamcast and can tell you it's just difficult to deal with the load times. That's absolutely no reason to play it on there. I must have played Armada with my younger brother over 100 hours. That game was awesome. here's a few other lesser talked about games I really enjoyed: Elemental Gimmick Gear (a lot more people are mentioning this one lately) Gundam Side Story 0079 (let someone borrow this once, got it back ruined, pretty upset about it still) JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Maken X Star Lancer Super Magnetic Neo Heavy Metal Geomatrix Wetrix+ Psychic Force 2012 Ooga Booga Floigan Brothers GunLord (look it up) Alien Front Online Evil Twin (hard to find now, PAL only, PC version is way cheaper) Segagaga(If you don't mind having to find subtitles or can read Japanese)

I don't understand how people could call this "hoarding." His game room is immaculate. He plays all the stuff he owns & is quite fanatical about game content & gameplay ...hoarders would be going on about how much a game is perceivably worth & what they paid for it, and not really care if the game was worth playing. To all the people bitching about him being a hoarder, all I can say is, *_jealous much?_* I've seen game hoarders & this guy is not a hoarder. Heavy collector, sure. Besides, if you don't like what he's doing, just leave. The only reason people bitch & whine in the comments is jealousy.

@Zeksteve What killed them was developing the 32x at the same time the Saturn was being developed. Because of that head banging between Sega of America and Japan, people lost faith in Sega. Turns out that the 32X and the Saturn were both utter disappointments. People get burned, they tend to start looking at the competition. Under powered system? Not by much compared to the PS1 and N64. Those arcade ports on the Dreamcast are golden and unmatched by it's generation of competition. It wasn't until the PS2 was in its 2nd year did it even have games that looked as good as the best Dreamcast arcade ports. Having a DVD wouldn't of made much difference, they were already going to be dead in the hardware area.

MrDeathSmiles I play Grandia 2 in its day n loved it, and still love it now. I tried playin some Skies and it was well made but i didnt really get into the story. I didnt get particularly far. People often say its one of the best rpgs if not the best on DC, so im sure it picks up, but so far definitely have to say Grandia 2 made a a way stronger impression for me. That character's and dialogue, music and plot, and that awesome fighting system (which i think i would say is the best jrpg fighting style ever) all combined to make it amazing. What do you love about Skies?

lol very subjective. Evolution is a game i remember extremely fondly, but I think it was a case of sheer charm overshadowning its technical....lack of finesse let's say. The dungeons beign randomized were suuuuper simplistic. The more i think of that game the more i feel i loved it for its character. But overall, Grandia 2, and i think Skies too probably, were better in terms of actual gameplay. The pirate theme also didnt speak to me too much personally, at least not in the way it was done, likely because they never felt like pirates. they felt like heroes n good guys, at least to the point i got too. I should probably give it another go

Played through both Grandia 2 and Skies back around 2001. I really enjoyed Grandia, but Skies blew me away. They shouldn't be compared though, quite different rpgs. What I loved about Skies of Arcadia might be something other people hated, the ability to just wander in a vast expanse and find your next destination, rather than a more straightforward path. Same reason I loved Suikoden IV even though there wasn't much to that game if played straight through. Same reason I was blown away in subsequent years by GTA 3 and beyond. I love the open realm.

That sounds interesting, I really didnt get that far in it. The story and characters are my primary focus especially in an rpg, and I wasnt getting hooked enough early on to get to those better parts. I do wanna give it more of a try tho. Playing it on an imperfect emulator didnt help either :/

Well, Cannon Spike isn't much really a "Hidden Gems", back in the day it had awful ratings (like 3/10 on the official Dreamcast Magazine, not kidding, they called the game as boring, etc...), so only a handfull of people bought it (it remained for years at my local video game store, and price kept on lowering), it's not a good game at all, pretty mediocre at that, but since it's rare, the price skyrocketed and it now cost 150bucks for a game no one even wanted back then.

***** Not sure why you think that a short lifetime can't make a system underrated, i would think the shorter the more underrated it would be. If it was hugely popular it would have had a long life time and thus not be underrated (because it's hugely popular, see how that works??) Anyway, it did last more than a year (the post says a year MORE), but even if it didn't that's how amazing the library was... it's still my favorite 3d console because of the wealth of fun and ground breaking titles: first online action game (Phantasy Star Online), first online sports game (NFL 2K), first cartoon rendered game (Jet Set Radio), first motion control game (Samba De Amigo), first voice activated game (Seaman)... on top of the games that were just drop dead fun Virtual On, Cosmic Smash, Mars Matrix, Power Stone, Skies of Arcadia, Shen Mue, Cool Cool Toon, Chu Chu Rocket, Space Channel 5, Zombie Revenge, COnfidential Mission, Rival Schools, Sega Rally 2, Pyshic Force 2012, Zero Gunner 2, Rez, etc, etc, etc, etc... basically the Dreamcast death was the end of true gaming innovation, I'm sure there was some groundbreaking innovation that happened after, but i can't think of it.

Capcom games were so prolific on the Dreamcast because of the agreement they had with Sega involving their NAOMI arcade hardware. Since the Dreamcast was basically an arcade board brought home, it only made sense to port to it vs. the PS1/PS2.

I agree that the Dreamcast console itself is a "hidden gem" lol. I cannot believe how many people skipped over this console back in its hay day. I remember right before it came out... a few of the launch titles were actually available for sale at my local mall before the system even came out (9/9/99)! I remember buying 4-5 games before the system was even released because I was so excited for it lol. I think unwashed in 9th grade at the time and my mom let me skip that day of school and drove my buddy and I to the mall to pick it up right when the store opened at like 10am (I think the store was called Babbages at the time, then Software Etc then finally turned into a GameStop) I have some great memories of ready 2 rumble, crazy taxi, sonic adventures 1 and 2, free style I think it was called? and many others... I actually just picked up a Dreamcast from craigslist last week . 1 controller with ready2rumble, sonic 1, and wwf attitude I think it is? with 1 controller, all the cables, and the consoles original box all for $30. which I thought was very reasonable. I didn't even haggle with him lol
