    Highly underrated epic song. Musically, it’s probably my favorite composition by them. Better than any other epics for sure. The performance is untouchable as well. Virtuoso progressive rock musicians playing their best composition at their best. I’m with you Rich.

    I personally think James Labrie's singing is quite awful. It constantly baffles me how a group of musicians with this unearthly level of talent can possibly tolerate having a vocalist with his level of inexperience in their band.

  • @JdDiehl

    @JdDiehl

    @@bakarenibsheut12 The only reason they refuse to fire LaBrie is because of everything he has contributed to the band in terms of lyrics, and musical composition. He has been the vocalist for well over 20 years and has played significant roles in all their major albums in that time. That said, I do think that after their tour in support of the new record (A View From The Top Of The World), they should part ways with James in the most respectful of terms, and hold auditions for a new vocalist.

  • @bakarenibsheut12

    @@JdDiehl Fair enough, he has contributed quite a bit compositionally. I doubt they will do this, though, as James seems to have a good relationship with the band members and it would be difficult for them to make a cold-hearted decision like that after all these years with him (even Portnoy left of his own accord rather than due to being fired). As for my criticism of James, he is indeed quite bad now, but he was incredible in the days of Images and Words.

    This might be my all time favorite DT performance (Well, between this and A Change of Seasons from Live Scenes from NY.) It's literally perfect, aside from the not-so-great quality. They were all on their A game. I've always liked this song, but in the past few years it's become one of my favorites. The whole Systematic Chaos album has aged so well, besides Prophets of War.

    Great song you reacted to. I actually was present here in NYC back in August of 2000 when Dream Theater did Scenes From A Memory in its entirety, at the legendary Roseland Ballroom, which was recorded and became Live Scenes From New York. The live album was released in 2001 and had to be recalled because it showed the twin towers on fire, which was too much considering the Twin Towers were destroyed not long after the album release. . Great show., ran about 3 hours.

    And this is why they are my favorite band. I love seeing you guys, especially Rich, react to Dream Theater music because it's like your my spirit animal sitting there watching greatness and at times just having this wordless realization that this is it. There's a lot of brilliant music out there and it's not a competition, but at the end of the day, even with my very wide musical taste there's just nothing that comes close to DT. You had it right the first time Rich, at 15:40 (in the video) / around 9 minutes of the song it changes to Part 2. Also the Chaos in Motion dvd is basically a collection of different songs from different shows from that tour, so the overall quality suffers because they filmed so much of it. I'd say it's their worst dvd, but at the same time I saw them live for the first time during that tour in 2007 so it'll always be special for me. Seeing the show begin with the yellow traffic light turning from red to yellow to green and In The Presence of Enemies blasting out in its entirety as the first song of the night... ah, changed music forever for me.

    If you want to see a good concert performance, you should checkout "Time Long Past/Exodus" by Fates Warning done at ProgPower USA in 2016. It was the 30 year anniversary of the release of Awaken the Guardian and Jim Matheos got all the original members together for a couple of shows to perform it in it's entirety. John Arch hadn't performed these songs in 30 years and really nails it. I already requested it.
