Honestly i wouldn't be offended if James used some vocal backing tracks for assistance. You cannot beat father time. The voice we desire hearing is shot. Can't deny hearing him struggle takes away from the experience 😮

Absolutely true, IMO his lack of range hurts the enjoyment of most of the songs play live now, It would have been excellent if he immune to that aging issue like Rob Halford/Bruce Dickinson/Glenn Hughes, Jeff Scott Soto was a badass singing those DT songs that he did with Sons of Apollo, he'd be a worthy replacement. I'd be equally happy if he (James) just harmonized with a backing track at a lower register though.

Super verdade. Super true. Despair see the effort for Labrie to reach the notes before. But, this is a matter for the band to decide what to do. About the return of Portnoy: Mangini said in an interview that he is extremely grateful to have played in DT and, this was for the band not to stop with their future tours. He was always an excellent drummer and very technical. Now that I’m dying to see if Portnoy will be able to play the DT songs in that period when he was out of the band. Mangini was able to do this feat. Will Portnoy match? Wait and see.

They are such a versatile group and could do much better if they would just draft someone else. It’s not a failure on his part it’s just sometimes, you gotta know when to say when. This is proof that a studio can make something sound much different then live. Sadly it’s false advertising in this case.

James singing live is very inconsistent. He was really good at Akron Ohio show on the 1st leg. I have never understood why he lets his diction be so sloppy. I am huge Rush fan and Geddy sounded awful on certain songs, but fans generally overlook it because Geddy is also playing keys and bass. All James does is sing. I am hoping in the on their break he gets in better shape and can get his voice sing more consistent. I don't mind if he sings certain songs half step or an octave lower as long as his voice is articulate and clear. But that is probably unlikely. Comparing DT to Rush, even Geddy sangs song in lower arrangements as time went on and their fans did not beat Geddy up over it.

@@morbidmanmusic Exactly right, Portnoy is a master of making drum patterns that serve the song while still being uniquely recognisable as his style. He also ad-libs a little live anyway. MM patterns that are too technical (and probably also those which aren't) will be adapted slightly to suit MP's style, and it will sound just as good, if not better.

I just wonder what happens behind the scenes. Everyone knows Labrie is super flat and labored live. Labrie knows it, probably more than anyone. What can be done? Better breathing prep? That's be my suggestion. You don't throw away a thunderbird because it has a dent in the fender...with that said, maybe it is time to go the Steve Walsh route, if nothing markedly improves. It can't be a comfortable scenario for anyone in the band, it certainly isn't for the fans.

It is unfair for a singer like him who sung from Freddie Mercury to Dio (see cover tunes on big clouds album) where the results are astonishing to me. He can not sing child in time of course but he is a professional singer so if the group decided to cover the made in japan then the group is responsible, not the singer himself. I love James's vocals and I think we have to respect his work. In my humble opinion.

Ever since his accident, he's had absolutely incredible nights (I've seen them 3 times between 2000 and 2008, he knocked it out of the park every time) and 2012 was a really great year for him (see Luna Park, what a show!) even though it's clear he's struggled at times, but since like 2016 I'm sorry but he just can't do it anymore. I don't think there is any shame in replacing him or just completely drop an octave on every songs, but they just can't keep going like this... as much as it pains me to say it, it's the truth.
