I felt this way at first until I saw them play live together (twice on this tour) and man was my mind changed. They are on top of their game right now and are playing with such joy (its been a while since I've seen that from them). Anyway, as a drummer, I was blown away by Mangini ... his passion (for music) and technical mastery is almost unparalleled right now. I cannot wait until the next album where Mangini will have crative input.

We need more songs from Awake on live shows. 6:00, Caught in a Web, The Mirror, Lie and Voices were perfect on latest tours.

Mike M is ambidextrous and plays open-style on both sides. Yes, he's that good.

HAHAHA I always thought for the last 20 years that this intro was played by John it's such a relief to see it's keys, it made me drop out of guitar school when I first heard this 20 years ago, Now I can go back to playing MAN!

Cont. We will just have to wait till the new album in order so see Mangini's full potential. Similar to Images and Words and LaBrie. Awake was his real coming out and actually shining as a vocalist with the band. Been a DT fan for a long time and will be one for life no mater who's in it......well I don't think i could listen to them without JP :P

So many act as if its some sort of miracle that Dream Theater would actually get a new drummer who could handle his job. Dd anyone expect less than a great drummer...really?. C'mon, these guys are on their game and have been for years.

@daryllhurst Of course it should be standing but it was a seated gig, and I'm 4 foot nothing lol. Had there not been rows of sats between everybody I might have stood a chance.

"THE" beat. The intro one. Yes MM is capable of doing it, which makes it all the sadder. It's a question of groove, just listen to the beginning (before guitar and bass kick in) then go back to Awake in Japan, with Mike & Derek, and you'll know what I'm talking about (or maybe you won't, to each his own). But when I listen to parts that require groove (could give 1000 examples, but let's just mention the ending of The Count of Tuscany in 6/8) MP has it, MM doesn't (as far as "I" am concerned)

Mangini may be better in certain areas but it was Portnoys unique style and balls to the wall drumming that gave DT that sound we love today and frankly the new album is missing. Mangini does a good job but his drumming is missing something that Portnoy could capture.

Which beat and what the hell are you talking about? Mike Mangini has complete 4 limb independence, something Portnoy doesn't quite have. If there's a change in a beat, it's on purpose.

Mac: Well, first of all, it's not a jacket. It's a duster. It's like a jacket only it's longer, thicker, and far more bad-ass. I look like Lorenzo Lamas, and women find it irresistible. Dee: Well, that part's just simply not true.

Don't get me wrong, Mangini is great. He does have enthusiasm, and I agree they do seem like they are having a good time but I have notice their sets have been becoming more bland and very predictive. I remember going to a DT show and not knowing what to expect to hear. And if Mangini played on a bigger/deeper sounder kit, it would capture that DT sound that is truly evident in their earlier works. Mangini is an amazing drummer and I'm glad they got him just certain things that he can't caputure

Potnoy is a whining little boy who thought he could control the band. Mangini has a much better attitude towards everything. Waiting with great anticipation for their next album where Mangini gets to do some writing.
